Chapter 2

Beneath the ivory banner strung between two marble pillars stood Bianca, resplendent in a snow-white couture gown that had cost more than most men in the outer wards earned in a decade. She waited for her groom with the poise of a woman who believed she had finally clawed her way to the top of the table.

Around her clustered the old associates from our ward, the ones who had grown up in the same cramped streets we had, buzzing now with the particular excitement of people who smelled proximity to real power.

"Bianca, you kept this quiet! We had no idea you were marrying into the seat of the Castellano Syndicate!"

"I mean it. Vince Marchetti runs the whole operation now. You've done more than marry well. You've married the crown."

"Bianca, you're practically one of the untouchables now. Don't forget the little people when you're sitting at the head of the family."

Even Rosa Bellini was there, the old family fixer who had spent her whole life flattering whoever seemed to hold the reins that week. She hovered at Bianca's shoulder, her voice syrup-thick, but her eyes flicked first to the bride, gauging, measuring, before she committed to a single word of praise.

"Bianca, cara, the first time I laid eyes on you I knew you were destined for greatness. That's why I never pushed you when you fell behind the others. Some women are simply born to be seated among the powerful. They don't need to earn it the hard way."

As the compliments rained down, Bianca wore a triumphant smile, her chin lifting, her fingers drifting to the wedding ring on her hand and turning it slowly, as if the metal itself were proof of everything she had become.

Vince had been living beneath my roof for years, contributing nothing anyone could name. To give him something to do, some illusion of standing, I had handed him the running of the smallest front the Family owned. A quiet piece of the Castellano operation, low enough that his failures would cost me nothing.

I never imagined that scrap of borrowed authority would become the very throne Bianca now paraded before a crowd, basking in a glory that belonged to neither of them.

When I stepped through the doors, the same associates who had been falling over themselves a moment before turned toward me, and their faces changed. Brows drew together. Mouths curved down. They looked at me the way people look at something that has wandered in where it doesn't belong.

One of Bianca's hangers-on caught sight of the car idling behind me on the drive and hurried over, a sneer already forming.

"Adriana. You're really something. Did you rent a Bentley just to crash Bianca's wedding and save your own face?"

The others took the cue and closed in, their voices sharpening.

"No wonder she had the nerve to show. She just wanted to play pretend. A car like that has to cost three months' pay to rent."

"Some people can't help putting on a performance. As if borrowing a rich woman's car could ever measure up to a real Boss's wife."

"Is it really so hard to admit someone else came out ahead? Why go to all this trouble dressing up a rented car just to keep pace with your betters?"

Their words landed like small stones, one after another. I let them fall. My hand did not move to the pendant at my throat. Not yet. I stood among them, calm in a way none of them understood, and when I finally spoke, my voice carried no heat at all.

"Actually," I said evenly, "it's my car."

The murmuring stumbled. Before the meaning of it could settle over the courtyard, Bianca cut through the crowd, her white skirts hissing across the stone, and planted herself in front of me. Her triumph had curdled into something uglier.

Her hand came up and cracked across my face.

The sound of it silenced everyone. Somewhere behind us the string quartet faltered on a single held note, and for a heartbeat the whole gathering seemed to hold its breath, the way a room holds its breath when it senses, without knowing why, that a line has just been crossed.

"Your car?" Her voice climbed, shrill with the effort of holding her position. "This is my husband's car. Everyone here knows it belongs to Vince."

Her chin jerked upward, the ring turning once more beneath her thumb, as if she could summon her authority back by touching it.

"I've suspected for weeks that my husband was keeping some woman on the side. And now here she is. It's you, you little tramp."

The heat of the slap bloomed across my cheek, but I did not raise my hand to it. I looked at her, and at the crowd already leaning in, hungry for the humiliation, and felt the old cold thing settle low in my chest.

"You shameless gold digger. How dare you crawl into my wedding driving my husband's car, flaunting yourself in front of me, the wife who actually belongs at his side?"
