Chapter 3

Julia's POV

"Are you insane?" Marcus yelled, kicking the bedroom door wide open.

I pulled the zipper around the edge of my canvas suitcase.

"Look at me when I'm talking to you, Julia!"

He lunged for my luggage. I yanked the handle back, putting the mattress between us. Rain dripped from his bespoke navy suit, staining the hardwood floor.

"Let go of it," I said, my voice flat.

"You just destroyed the premiere! You cost us three major sponsorships!"

"Cost you," I corrected.

"It was a script reading!" He threw his wet hands in the air, spraying raindrops across the duvet. "We were rehearsing lines for the new psychological thriller! You know the studio demanded a rewrite on the romance angle."

I stared at him. "A script reading. In the dark. While you told her to unbutton her dress."

"Method acting! You know how I work to get the right vocal performance."

"And the Van Cleef necklace? Was that a prop?"

His jaw clamped shut.

"I saw the charges on the Amex last month, Marcus. And the digital key logs for the Four Seasons penthouse. You always were sloppy with the accounting."

The mask dropped. The righteous anger vanished from his face, replaced by a cold, calculating stare.

Marcus paced at the foot of the bed. "You're overreacting. You always do this. You take a fragmented piece of information and blow it out of proportion."

"A live audio feed broadcast to five thousand people is not a fragment."

"You embarrassed me in front of the entire industry!"

"You embarrassed yourself."

"I gave you everything!" he roared, slamming his fist against the dresser. "You were mixing sound in a dive bar when I met you. I elevated you to the top of the food chain."

"I gave you my grandmother's inheritance to fund your first short. I ghostwrote every script that won you an award. You didn't elevate me, Marcus. You drained me."

"Nobody cares who typed the words. They care whose name is on the poster."

He reached inside his ruined jacket, pulled out a folded stack of papers, and threw them onto the glass coffee table. The damp pages stuck to the surface.

"You think you're walking out of here with half my empire?" he asked. His tone dropped to a low, menacing register.

I glanced at the top page. My signature sat at the bottom of a non-disclosure agreement from three years ago.

"You were my ghostwriter," Marcus said. "A contracted employee. That NDA covers every treatment, every script, every review you ever typed in that basement."

"I wrote The Abyss. I built your career."

"Try proving that in court." He leaned over the table, planting his palms on the glass. "I'll bury you in legal fees before you even file a motion. You walk out that door, I freeze everything. You won't see a dime. I'll sue you for breach of contract and corporate sabotage."

"You can't freeze the joint accounts without my consent."

"Watch me. My lawyers are already on the phone with the bank. You're a security risk to the company now."

His gaze shifted to the slim laptop sleeve beside my suitcase. He moved for it.

I got there first and pulled it against my chest. "That computer is mine."

"Everything created under my roof belongs to the company."

"The purchase receipt is in my name, and every draft on it carries my device signature." I stepped around the bed, keeping the suitcase between us. "Take it, and I report the theft before your lawyers finish breakfast."

For the first time that night, uncertainty cracked his expression. Marcus knew contracts. I knew systems, backups, and audit trails. He could intimidate a wife he believed would stay quiet; he was less certain what to do with an engineer who had finally started preserving evidence.

I slid the laptop into my backpack and zipped it shut. "You should have remembered who built your archives."

He waited for me to scream. He wanted me to throw a lamp, to beg him to reconsider, to negotiate a settlement.

"You're a nobody without me, Julia," he sneered. "Who's going to hire a sound tech who sabotages live broadcasts?"

"I'm not looking for a sound tech job."

I reached into my pocket. My fingers brushed against the apartment keys. I pulled them out and dropped them onto the floor.

The metal clinked sharply in the quiet room.

"Keep the money, Marcus," I said.

I grabbed the handle of my suitcase and walked right past him.

"If you walk out that door, you are dead in this town!" he shouted at my back.

I didn't turn around. I pulled the front door open and stepped into the hall.

Rain hammered the pavement. Two in the morning, and the city streets were completely empty. I dragged my suitcase down the wet sidewalk, the plastic wheels grinding against the concrete.

I huddled under the glowing awning of a closed convenience store to escape the downpour. Water soaked through my thin jacket, chilling my skin.

I pulled out my phone and opened my banking app.

Available balance: $342.16.

I tapped the joint studio account. A red error message flashed across the screen.

Account locked. Contact your branch administrator.

Four hours ago, I was the wife of a celebrated director, managing millions in production budgets. Now, I stood shivering outside a shuttered storefront, calculating if I could afford a two-star motel off the interstate.

I locked the screen. He thought freezing me out would break me. He thought taking the money meant taking my power.

He was wrong. I wrote the scripts. I crafted the narratives. I would take back every single word that built his throne.

My phone buzzed in my palm.

A text message from an unknown number appeared on the lock screen. I opened the thread.

An image loaded. It was a blurry photo taken of a computer monitor. The document on the screen bore the letterhead of Marcus's legal team.

Emergency Gag Order and Preliminary Injunction.

My name was listed as the defendant.

A second message popped up underneath the photo.

"He files this at 8 AM. If you want to fight back, meet me in the InterContinental lobby at 7:30."
