The Cold Alpha's Runaway Mate Novel Cover

The Cold Alpha's Runaway Mate

For four years, Ember was the invisible, wolfless mate of Alpha Duke Blake. At his grandmother's deathbed, she demanded an heir, and Duke agreed without emotion, treating Ember as a breeding vessel. At the funeral, he stood with his Beta, Jossie, letting a neighboring Alpha offer condolences to her as his future Luna while Ember was ignored. She signed the Mate Rejection papers and fled the pack. A week later, Duke bypassed her apartment lock, kidnapped her, and dragged her back, vowing she would not leave until she carried his child. Ember stopped fighting and let silent tears fall, cracking his cold facade. He fled in horror, refusing the rejection. But as the door locked, her tears stopped. If paper could not sever the bond, she would tear it apart herself.

Chapter 2

Kyla POV:

I didn't remember the walk back from the cemetery, my mind a blur of cold rain and colder resolve. By the time the call ended, I was finally behind the closed door of my room. The phone slipped from my numb fingers, landing with a soft thud on the plush rug. I slid down the wall, my back scraping against the cool plaster, until I was huddled on the floor. The cold, smooth surface of my phone pressed against my cheek.

Outside, the rain continued its relentless assault on the windowpanes. Inside, the room was dark, a cavern of shadows and silence. It was my bedroom, but it had never felt like mine. It was a large, impeccably decorated space with expensive furniture and silk sheets, but it had all the warmth of a high-end hotel suite. A beautiful cage.

Memories, sharp and unwanted, flooded the darkness.

Four years ago. Being brought to this estate, a scared, wolfless orphan plucked from the fringes of society. Matriarch Eleanor's smile, kind but distant, as she explained my 'duty'.

Duke's eyes when he first saw me. No spark of recognition. No jolt of a fated bond. Just a cool, detached assessment, like a rancher inspecting livestock. He couldn't feel it. Because I was wolfless, the mind-link channel through which Mates recognized each other's souls was dead air for him. I was a faulty product.

The memories shifted. Lonely dinners at a dining table that could seat twenty, with me as the sole occupant. Duke was always busy. 'Pack business.'

Jossie's smiling face was a recurring specter in that business. Her arm linked through his at the annual pack gala. Her laughter echoing in the garden during a family barbecue, sitting beside his mother, Audrey. Her silhouette in the window of his study, late into the night.

I remembered the one time I'd gathered the courage to ask. My voice had been a small, trembling thing. "Is Jossie... the one you would have chosen?"

He'd looked up from his paperwork, his gaze so cold it felt like frostbite. "Mind your own business, Kyla."

That was it. The moment every foolish, girlish fantasy I'd harbored had died a swift, brutal death. He wasn't my savior. This wasn't a fairytale. It was a prison sentence.

My fingers drifted to my wrist, tracing a faint, silvery scar on the inside. A relic from my first few weeks here, when the gilded cage had felt so suffocating I'd tried to run, only to be caught and brought back like a stray animal.

A vibration against my cheek startled me. The phone. A new email.

The subject line was stark against the dark screen: Rejection Ritual Procedures & Draft. From Mr. Henderson.

A deep breath. I pushed myself up, my limbs stiff and cold. I sat on the edge of the bed and opened the email.

The text was a wall of cold, hard legalese. The ritual required both parties to be present, along with Pack Elders. Vows had to be spoken. I, Kyla Dalton, reject you, Duke Blake, as my Mate.

The rejecting party would feel a tearing in their soul. The rejected party, the document stated clinically, would experience double the pain.

A pang of something—not pity, not for him—but a deep, aching sorrow for the cruelty of it all, twisted in my gut. A bond I never felt, a fate I never chose, would still bring agony in its destruction.

Attached was a PDF: Application for Dissolution of Mate Bond.

My name. His name. A line for my signature. A line for his.

I stood and walked to the small, antique desk in the corner. I flicked on the lamp, and a pool of warm, yellow light illuminated my pale, determined face. I didn't have a printer here. I would have to go into town.

My plan began to form, a fragile scaffold of hope in the ruins of my life.

I opened the vast walk-in closet. It was filled with beautiful, expensive gowns and outfits Eleanor had insisted on buying for me. Clothes for a Luna I would never be. Clothes I had rarely worn.

In the very back, tucked away in a dusty garment bag, I found them. The worn jeans and faded t-shirt I had arrived in four years ago.

I stripped off the black funeral dress and pulled on my old clothes. It felt like shedding a skin that had never fit, a costume for a role I was finally quitting.

I checked my phone again, this time opening my banking app. Eleanor had arranged a generous monthly allowance for me, deposited into a private account. I had barely touched it, too proud or too foolish to feel like a kept woman. Now, it was my escape fund. It was more than enough to rent an apartment, to start over.

The plan solidified. Tomorrow morning, I would leave. I would go to town, find a small apartment, get a job. Any job.

I would hand the signed rejection papers to Duke myself. I owed myself a clean break. No more hiding in the shadows.

I went through my contacts and, one by one, blocked every member of the Blake family and their inner circle. Everyone except Alfred, the old butler. A small, sentimental weakness.

I looked at my reflection in the dark window. The girl staring back was a stranger, her eyes hard and empty of the hopeful light they once held. The girl who had yearned for love, for acceptance, was gone. Buried today, alongside the Matriarch.

I would be free. Whatever the cost.

I sat at the desk and replied to Mr. Henderson's email. "Thank you. I will have the documents prepared shortly and will notify you of the next steps."

I didn't sleep. I sat in the armchair by the window, watching the rain slowly subside. As the first hint of gray light appeared on the horizon, it felt less like a new day and more like a new life, dawning just for me.
