Chapter 2

Three days after Christmas, my phone vibrated at 5:47 AM. Margaret's name glowed on the screen like a summons from the underworld.

"My study. Six o'clock sharp."

No greeting. No explanation. Just commands, as always.

I pulled myself from the guest room bed where I'd been sleeping since Christmas Eve. Elizabeth hadn't questioned it when I'd moved my things, hadn't asked why. The space between us had simply expanded to accommodate another failure, another crack in the foundation of our marriage.

Margaret's study smelled of old leather and older money. She sat behind her mahogany desk like a queen on a throne, her silver hair perfectly styled despite the early hour. A thick folder sat before her, and she slid it across the polished surface with two fingers, as if even touching it disgusted her.

"The Riverside Project is in jeopardy," she said, her voice clipped and cold. "The permits Clint was handling have fallen through. New zoning requirements. The city won't approve the current plans."

I opened the folder, scanning the documents. My architect's eye immediately caught the problems—setback violations, height restrictions, environmental concerns that should have been addressed months ago. This wasn't just a minor hiccup. This was catastrophic negligence.

"How long has Clint known about this?"

Margaret's expression hardened. "That's irrelevant. What matters is fixing it. Now."

"Margaret, this is going to take—"

"I don't care what it takes." She leaned forward, her gaze sharp enough to cut. "You've been living off this family for five years, Elias. Earning your keep has been... minimal at best. Here's your chance to prove you're worth something."

The words landed like physical blows, each one calculated to remind me of my place. Not son-in-law. Not family. Just another employee who wasn't pulling his weight.

I left her study with the folder clutched in my hand and rage burning in my chest.

The next seventy-two hours blurred into an endless cycle of coffee, phone calls, and redesigned floor plans. I called in every favor I'd accumulated in my abandoned architectural career, reached out to city officials I'd once worked with, spent eighteen-hour days hunched over my laptop recalculating load distributions and setback measurements. The guest room became my war room, papers spreading across every surface, coffee cups multiplying like bacteria.

Elizabeth never came to check on me. Never asked what I was working on or why I looked like death. She existed in her separate world of lunch dates and shopping trips and phone conversations with Clint that drifted through our bedroom door in the early evenings.

On the third night, I finally cracked the solution. A complete redesign that not only met the new zoning requirements but actually improved the development's market value by incorporating the environmental restrictions into an attractive green space feature. It was brilliant work—the kind of innovative thinking that had once made me proud to call myself an architect.

I fell asleep at my desk at 3 AM, the completed plans still glowing on my laptop screen.

---

The emergency family meeting convened in the Collins mansion's conference room at noon. Margaret sat at the head of the long table, Elizabeth and Clint flanking her like courtiers beside a throne. I stood at the other end, my presentation materials spread before me, exhaustion making my hands shake slightly as I clicked through the redesigned plans.

"The new design incorporates the environmental setbacks into a central courtyard feature," I explained, my voice hoarse from three days of phone negotiations. "It actually increases the property value by fifteen percent while meeting all current zoning requirements. I've already secured preliminary approval from the city planning office."

Margaret studied the projections, her reading glasses perched on her nose. For a moment, I saw something that might have been approval flicker across her face.

"The numbers are solid," she admitted finally. "This will work."

Relief flooded through me, followed immediately by a bone-deep weariness that made my knees weak. Seventy-two hours of hell, but I'd done it. I'd saved their project.

Clint rose from his seat, crossing the room to clap me on the shoulder with practiced bonhomie. "Well, that's what we keep you around for, isn't it?" His voice carried to every corner of the room, that trademark smirk playing at his lips. "The technical stuff."

Laughter rippled around the table. Polite, knowing laughter that acknowledged the joke and the truth beneath it.

I wasn't family. I was the hired help. The fix-it man. The technical support.

Elizabeth gathered her purse and coat, barely glancing at the plans I'd spent three sleepless nights perfecting. "We should celebrate," she said brightly, looking at Clint. "Lunch at Daniel? My treat, for saving the project."

For saving the project. As if he'd done something other than create the crisis in the first place.

They left together, Elizabeth's hand resting lightly on Clint's arm, their voices fading down the hallway. Margaret followed without a word of thanks, leaving me alone with my brilliant solution and the crushing realization that excellence didn't matter here.

Only bloodline did.

---

Two weeks into January, Margaret summoned the family to the formal dining room. I'd learned to dread these gatherings, each one a fresh reminder of my outsider status.

"We'll be hosting a celebration," Margaret announced, her voice carrying the weight of a royal decree. "To honor Clint's exceptional leadership on the Riverside Project. His vision and quick thinking saved a crucial family investment."

His vision. His leadership.

I felt something crack inside my chest—not dramatically, not all at once, but like ice splitting under pressure. Slow. Inevitable.

Elizabeth's face lit up with genuine enthusiasm. "That's wonderful! We should make it spectacular. The Grand Ballroom at the Plaza? Or should we do something more intimate here at the house?"

She turned to Clint, already pulling out her phone to take notes, and I watched them bend their heads together over party details. Seating arrangements. Menu selections. Guest lists that would include everyone who mattered in their world.

Everyone except the man who'd actually saved their goddamn project.

"Elias," Margaret's voice cut through my spiraling thoughts. "You'll handle the logistics, of course. Coordinate with the caterers and venue staff."

Of course. Because that's what I did. The invisible labor. The thankless tasks.

I opened my mouth—to object, to defend myself, to finally push back against five years of casual cruelty. But Elizabeth spoke first, her voice carrying that particular tone of bewildered patience she used when she thought I was being difficult.

"Elias, this is Clint's project. You just... helped with some technical issues. Don't make this about you."

Don't make this about you.

I looked at my wife—this woman I'd sacrificed everything for—and saw a stranger wearing Elizabeth's face. When had she become so skilled at diminishing me? When had my contributions become so invisible that even saving her family's investment counted as nothing more than "helping with technical issues"?

Margaret was already discussing invitation lists, her voice a distant drone. Clint caught my eye across the table and raised his wine glass in a mock toast, that smirk firmly in place.

And Elizabeth just kept planning her party, never once looking in my direction.

The ice in my chest cracked a little deeper.

I wondered how much more it could take before it shattered completely.
