Chapter 1

My phone vibrated violently against the kitchen counter, flashing an unsaved number.

I tapped the screen and brought it to my ear. "Hello?"

"Maya? Thank god you picked up." The voice was low, strained, and breathless.

"Jasper?" I recognized the cadence immediately. Jasper was Rainer's closest friend and our team's chief mechanic. "Why are you calling from an unknown line?"

"My battery died, I'm using a track landline," Jasper spat out in a rushed whisper. "Listen to me. Rainer is in the pit lane office right now hammering out the final terms for his overseas transfer. The scouts from the European circuit are on a secure conference call. He needs the track strategy binder you drafted yesterday. The hard copy. He left it on the dining table."

"Wait, the telemetry breakdown for Silverstone and Monza?"

"Yes! Exactly that!" Jasper snapped, background noise crackling over the receiver. "The transfer hinges on the cornering simulation data. If he doesn't put those physical sheets in front of the representative within twenty minutes, the entire deal stalls. Bring it to the garage right now."

"I'm leaving the house this second," I said, already grabbing my car keys.

"Hurry. Don't call him, his phone is routed to the presentation display. Just get down to the paddock."

The line went dead.

I seized the heavy, three-inch binder from the table. Seven months of aerodynamic calculations, tire degradation modeling, and custom engine mapping were bound inside those pages. I ran down to my car, tossed the binder onto the passenger seat, and sped toward the circuit.

Ten minutes later, I pushed past the paddock security gate. The smell of burnt synthetic rubber and high-octane fuel hung thick in the air, but the main garage bay was eerily quiet. Most of the crew had left after morning practice.

I made my way down the narrow service corridor toward the private engineering office. As I neared the frosted glass door, a high-pitched giggle drifted through the space.

The door was unlatched, cracked open by an inch.

"Be quiet," a man's voice murmured, thick with amusement. "Someone might walk past the garage."

"Nobody is out there, Rainer," a woman purred back. "Jasper is running interference by the dyno room just like you told him to."

I froze two feet from the door. My fingers dug into the textured cardboard of the binder.

I stepped closer, pressing my eye to the narrow gap.

Vera, the team's logistics coordinator, sat perched on the edge of the steel desk, her uniform skirt pushed high up her thighs. Rainer—my boyfriend of seven years, the man whose career I had built from local karting circuits to international championship contention—stood between her knees. His hands gripped her waist, pulling her flush against his racing suit.

He leaned down, pressing his lips against the curve of her throat, biting lightly.

"You're reckless today," Vera gasped, threading her fingers through his dark hair. "What if your little genius walks in?"

"Maya is at home waiting for my call like a loyal dog," Rainer chuckled against her skin, his mouth trailing down toward her collarbone. "She thinks I'm reviewing chassis data for our current sponsor. She has no idea."

"Mmm. Tell me again what you told the German scout."

"I told him what he wanted to hear," Rainer sneered softly. "That I'm the one who engineered the throttle mapping. That I personally solved the balance issue on the rear diffuser."

The binder slipped from my numbed grip.

It plummeted. The thick plastic spine struck the concrete floor with a loud, reverberating smack.

Vera's head jerked toward the doorway. "What was that?!"

Panic seized my chest. I jerked backward, throwing my weight sideways until my spine smashed hard against the freezing cinderblock wall of the hallway. I held my breath, flattening myself into the shadows beside an oversized toolbox.

Heavy footsteps strode toward the threshold inside the office. The hinges creaked as the door swung open another few inches.

"Nothing," Rainer's voice called out from the doorway, completely dismissive. "A gust from the pit lane bay knocked over a clipboard on the rack. Calm down."

"Check the hallway," Vera insisted.

"There's nobody here, Vera. Stop jumping at shadows." The door swung shut again, though the latch didn't fully catch. The gap remained.

My shoulder blades ached against the wall, but the pain felt distant, muffled under an icy shock that spread through my blood.

"You're paranoid," Rainer said inside, his tone dropping back into a smug drawl. "Everything is set. I finished cloning Maya's private external drive this morning while she was in the shower. Every single setup file. The simulation algorithms, the suspension geometry, the fuel-burn predictive models—all of it. It's sitting on my encrypted cloud drive right now."

"All of it?" Vera asked, her voice dripping with greed.

"Seven years of proprietary tuning formulas," Rainer bragged. "The new team offered me a three-year contract worth twelve million. They think I'm a prodigy who designs his own telemetry."

"What happens to Maya when we leave for the European tests next week?"

Rainer laughed, a dry, cruel sound that made my stomach turn.

"She takes the fall for the entire season's deficit," he said flatly. "During the joint test session in Barcelona, I'm going to run the car off at Turn Four. I'll blame it on a catastrophic steering rack failure caused by improper calibration. I already altered the test logs under her system login to make it look like she over-tightened the linkages."

"Will management believe that?"

"Why wouldn't they?" Rainer countered. "A fatal telemetry glitch on paper, paired with my testimony. The board will fire her before the ambulance even clears the track. Her name will be poison in the paddock. No racing outfit in Formula racing or endurance cups will ever touch her again. She'll be utterly ruined."

"And if she tries to claim the setups were hers all along?"

"Who's going to listen to a disgraced, bitter ex-girlfriend who nearly killed her star driver?" Rainer hummed, followed by the wet sound of another kiss. "She gave me her brain, Vera. Now that I have the blueprints, she's worthless. I'm taking you to Monaco, not her. You're the one who looks good on a podium."

"You're ruthless, Rainer," Vera whispered against his lips.

"I'm a winner," he corrected her. "Winners don't share the purse."

Seven years.

I had spent seven years sleeping on garage cots, analyzing telemetry until my eyes bled, skipping meals so we could afford replacement gearboxes, shielding his reckless driving habits from race stewards. I had transformed an arrogant amateur into a title contender.

And he had planned my complete destruction down to the minute.

No tears came. Instead, an unnatural, freezing calm settled into my chest. The suffocating nausea vanished, replaced by a clarity so sharp it cut straight through the fog.

I looked down at the floor. The binder lay two feet from the door.

Moving with featherlight precision, I crouched down. I wrapped my fingers around the binder's edge, lifted it without a whisper of friction, and pulled it back against my ribs.

Inside the office, Vera's quiet moans resumed, punctuated by the rhythmic creak of the desk legs against the linoleum.

I didn't shove the door open. I didn't shout. I didn't give them the satisfaction of a scene.

I straightened up, tucked the seven years of my stolen intellectual property tightly under my arm, and walked silently down the hallway.

Rainer thought he held the master key to his glorious overseas career.

He had no idea that the drive he copied had a remote-kill fail-safe embedded directly into the root code—and I had just decided how to detonate it.
