Chapter 2

The yellow cab slammed its brakes in front of the hospital entrance, the tires screeching against the asphalt like a scream. Eleanor threw a fifty-dollar bill onto the front seat—she didn't wait for the change, couldn't spare a single second. She kicked the door open and sprinted toward the emergency doors, her heart battering her ribs with a wild, desperate rhythm.

She ran to the front desk, her chest heaving, lungs burning as if they were filled with shards of glass. "My grandmother," she gasped, her voice scraped raw, barely a whisper torn from her throat. "Room number. Please."

The nurse pointed toward the elevators. Eleanor didn't wait. She flew down the long corridor, her heels clicking wildly against the linoleum floor, each frantic step a prayer she couldn't put into words. The fluorescent lights blurred past her, a tunnel of cold white panic.

She reached the third floor and lunged for the heavy door of the ICU, her palms slamming against the cold metal. A hand grabbed her arm, firm and unyielding. Dr. Thorne stood in the doorway. He looked at her, his face drawn into lines of sorrow, and slowly shook his head.

The air left Eleanor's lungs in a single, devastated rush. Her legs turned to water, the strength draining from her body as if her very soul had been ripped out through her feet. The world tilted, the edges of her vision darkening. Through the glass window, she saw the nurses pulling the tubes away from her grandmother's frail body—gentle, final gestures. The heart monitor next to the bed displayed a solid, glowing flatline, a green slash of absolute silence that cut through her chest.

Eleanor's knees buckled. She slid down the wall, the cold surface scraping her back, but she felt nothing. Dr. Thorne caught her under the arms, holding her up, his grip the only thing keeping her from collapsing into a heap on the floor.

But then a surge of wild, desperate strength shot through her. She ripped herself out of his grip, a raw cry escaping her lips, and stumbled into the room. She threw herself over the bed, her body folding over the still form as if she could shield her grandmother from death itself. She grabbed her grandmother's hand—the skin was already turning cold, the familiar warmth leaching away into an unbearable absence. Eleanor pressed the cold, wrinkled hand to her face, the papery skin against her wet cheek. A raw, animalistic sob tore out of her throat, a sound she didn't recognize, a howl of grief so deep it seemed to come from the marrow of her bones. It echoed off the sterile walls, a primal keening that filled the room.

A nurse stepped forward and touched Eleanor's shoulder with feather-light fingers. Eleanor violently shoved the hand away, a snarl twisting her features. She couldn't be touched. She couldn't be comforted. She screamed her grandmother's name into the white sheets, the sound muffled and broken, her tears soaking the fabric until it clung to her face like a shroud.

Suddenly, a sharp cramp twisted her stomach—a vicious, searing knot. A violent wave of nausea hit the back of her throat, acidic and overwhelming. Eleanor gagged, clamping a hand over her mouth. Black spots danced at the edges of her vision, swarming like angry wasps. The high-pitched ringing in her ears swelled, drowning out the nurses' voices, drowning out everything but the terrible, hollow silence where her grandmother's heartbeat used to be.

She tried to stand, desperate to stay with her, but the room spun violently. The floor rushed up to meet her, and everything went dark—a thick, suffocating blackness that swallowed her whole.

When Eleanor opened her eyes, the sharp smell of bleach burned her nose, stinging and antiseptic. She was lying on a narrow hospital bed, the thin mattress offering no comfort. Panic jolted through her like electricity. She shot up, the world lurching with the movement, and ripped the IV needle out of the back of her hand. A bright drop of blood smeared across her skin, a stark crimson bead against her pallor.

"I need to see her," Eleanor said, throwing her legs over the side of the bed, her voice cracking but fierce. "I need to be with her."

Dr. Thorne walked in and pushed her firmly back against the pillows, his expression a mix of concern and urgency. "You need to stay calm," he said, his voice hard but not unkind. He held out a printed lab report, the paper trembling slightly in his grip. "You are pregnant."

Eleanor stared at the paper. The positive markers blurred together, dancing in her swimming vision. Her brain refused to process the words. Pregnant. The word echoed in the hollow cavity of her chest, but it made no sense—not now, not with her grandmother gone, not with her life in ruins.

"The ultrasound confirmed it," Dr. Thorne continued, his voice gentler now, as if he understood the weight of this impossible moment. "It's not just one. You are carrying triplets. This is a highly high-risk pregnancy."

Eleanor's shaking hand moved down to her flat stomach, the gesture slow and trembling. Her skin felt ice-cold beneath her fingers, but beneath that coldness, a tiny flicker of something—life. Shock paralyzed her muscles, a numbing, frozen disbelief that stole her breath. Then came the fear, crashing over her like a black wave. It wasn't a gentle tide; it was a suffocating, monstrous terror that squeezed her throat and pressed against her chest until she thought she might shatter.

She saw Griffin's broad back walking away, the memory scorching through her mind. She saw the divorce papers, the black ink still wet with the death of their marriage. She saw Andrea's victorious smile, that gloating, predatory curve of lips that had fed on her pain. If Griffin found out—if he knew about these babies—he would take them. He had the money. He had the power. He had already thrown her away like she was nothing, and he would rip this last, fragile piece of her life from her hands without a second thought. She had nothing. Nothing but this.

A new, fierce heat ignited in her chest—a blazing, protective fire that burned through the grief and the terror. Her dull eyes, which had been hollow and shattered, suddenly sharpened. The trembling in her hands steadied. The lost, broken woman on the bed was gone, replaced by something harder, something forged in the crucible of loss.

"I will rest," Eleanor whispered, her voice steadying, each word a quiet vow etched in steel. "I will do whatever it takes."

Dr. Thorne nodded and left the room, the door clicking shut behind him. Eleanor sat alone in the quiet room, the silence pressing in on her. She stared out the window at the setting sun, its dying light painting the sky in hues of blood and gold. The tears still fell, silent now, tracing cold paths down her cheeks. She pressed both hands hard against her stomach, her fingers splayed wide as if she could wrap herself around the tiny lives within.

"He will never know you exist," she promised the empty room, her voice low and fierce, trembling with a love so ferocious it felt like rage. "Never. You are mine. Only mine."
