Chapter 1

Ten minutes earlier, I walked into the HaloPulse boardroom with a folder pressed to my chest and good news on my tongue.

The new factory had passed testing. The worst of the cash crunch was almost behind us. I had a partnership plan that could double both our companies in a year.

I wanted Grant to be the first to know.

Instead, I froze in the doorway.

A blonde woman sat at the right hand of the table. My seat. The one I'd held for four years.

Bianca Lowell. Grant's new head of marketing. She'd been hired six months ago.

A silver watch caught the light on her wrist. A limited edition. Only fifty were ever made.

Grant had promised it to me for our anniversary.

"Camille." Grant Mercer, CEO of HaloPulse and the man I'd planned to marry, didn't stand up. His hand rested on the back of Bianca's chair, his thumb tracing her shoulder. "Good timing. Have a seat."

There was no empty chair.

Reporters lined the back wall. Two men in gray suits sat near the window. New investors, I guessed. Every board member avoided my eyes.

"Grant, what is this?"

"This," he said, sliding a document across the polished table, "is formal notice. HaloPulse is ending its partnership with Arden Industries. Effective today."

The room went quiet. Camera shutters clicked.

I recognized the pages before he finished. I'd drafted them myself, late at night, back when his company was a garage and a prayer. I'd built in every safeguard I could think of so no one could ever trap him.

"Section nine," Grant said. "Material financial change. Your revenue dropped forty percent last quarter. I have every right to leave a sinking ship."

One of the investors nodded slowly.

My face burned. I opened my folder with fingers that wouldn't stay steady.

"The drop was planned. We shut down the old production lines on purpose. The new plant finished testing on Monday. Here are the numbers—"

I held out the pages.

He didn't take them.

"Camille, everyone in this room knows the Arden name hasn't meant anything since your father died." He leaned back, almost gentle. "This is a fantasy. The fantasy of a broke heiress who refuses to wake up."

Bianca covered her mouth. Not fast enough to hide the smile.

"Ten minutes," I said. "Give me ten minutes to walk you through the data. That's all I'm asking."

"We're done here."

He rose and turned toward the investors. I didn't think. I reached out and caught his cuff.

"Four years, Grant." My voice cracked down the middle. "Is that all it was worth? A termination notice?"

For a second, something flickered in his face.

Then he ripped his arm free, hard enough that I stumbled into the table.

"I loved Miss Arden," he said, loud enough for every reporter to hear. "The woman who could open any door. Not whatever you are now."

Someone gasped. Someone else laughed.

And I stood there, remembering.

The night his first startup collapsed, rain hammering the loading dock while I hauled server racks beside him in ruined silk. He'd kissed my soaked hair and said, You're the only one who stayed.

The hospital hallway during his mother's surgery. Eleven hours on a plastic chair. I'd held his hand until sunrise.

The month he couldn't make payroll. I'd mortgaged my apartment without telling him. Forty-two employees got paid on time. He never asked where the money came from.

"Security," Grant said, already turning away. "Take her badge."

A guard stepped forward. He wouldn't meet my eyes either.

"Ma'am. I'm sorry."

I unclipped the visitor pass myself. Visitor. Four years, and I was a visitor.

Bianca slid her arm through Grant's as I passed. Her perfume was sweet and cheap underneath the expensive label.

"Don't worry, Camille," she murmured. "I hear racing sponsorships are pricey. You'll find a cheaper hobby soon."

I kept walking.

I didn't cry in the boardroom. I didn't cry in the hallway, past the receptionist who'd once brought me birthday cake.

The elevator doors closed.

Then the tears came all at once, hot and ugly. I braced a palm against the mirrored wall because my knees had stopped working. The woman staring back looked like a stranger. Smeared mascara. A folder crushed against her ribs.

Pathetic, I thought. He used your own words to bury you.

My own words.

I wiped my face with the back of my hand and pulled the contract out. I knew it by heart, but I made myself read Section nine again. Line by line.

Before terminating under this clause, the terminating party shall deliver written notice of the alleged breach and allow a thirty-day cure period.

I read it a second time. A third.

He hadn't sent a notice. No warning. No thirty days.

I flipped to Section fourteen.

Neither party shall disclose the other's confidential financial information to any third party.

He'd just announced my quarterly revenue in front of six reporters and two outside investors. On camera.

A sound came out of me. It took a moment to realize it was a laugh.

Grant never read the fine print. He'd always had me for that.

The elevator chimed at the lobby. I stayed put and let the doors close again. Then I pulled out my phone and called up the one contact I trusted.

Priya Nadeem. My lawyer since I was twenty-two.

She'd already texted. Just saw the livestream. Are you okay? Want me to send him a letter tonight?

My thumb hovered over the screen. My hands had finally stopped shaking.

I typed slowly.

Not yet. Don't warn him. I want to see how many more mistakes he makes.

Three dots appeared. Disappeared. Appeared again.

Understood. I'll start building the file.

I tucked the contract back in my folder and checked my reflection. Red eyes. Fine. Let them see red eyes. Grant would be telling the story of how I fell apart by dinner.

Let him.

The doors opened. I'd made it halfway across the marble floor when my phone buzzed again.

Not Priya.

An email. The sender's name made me stop walking.

Atlas Racing — Team Principal's Office.

I opened it.

Ms. Arden,

Following yesterday's race, our lead driver has asked to meet with you personally before the championship final. He is aware of today's events. He says it changes nothing.

Nolan Rourke finished second. He would like to discuss finishing first.

A car will be waiting outside HaloPulse in five minutes, if you're willing.

I looked up through the glass doors.

A black car was already pulling to the curb.
