Chapter 1

Victor used to tell everyone I was the reason VelaDrive existed.

Eight years ago, I sold my mother’s condo and placed a $420,000 cashier’s check in his hands.

He kissed my fingers, signed me fifteen percent of the company, and promised every car he built would bring me home safe.

For years, he opened doors for me, sent roses to my design studio, and called me the only person he trusted.

Then our autonomous car met a truck on the MacArthur Causeway at 8:47 p.m.

The cabin turned before impact.

Camila’s side hardened around her while mine folded into steel and glass.

I woke with cracked ribs and blood drying under my wedding ring.

Priya placed the black-box screen in front of me.

The protected occupant was not Victor’s wife.

It was Victor’s assistant.

“Camila was only test data,” Victor said.

“Then why did the car move the impact to Isabella’s side?” Priya asked.

“The system glitched.”

“Did you set Camila as primary?”

Victor looked at me. “Don’t destroy my company over a line of code.”

Victor pulled open the rear door of the matte-black sedan, but his arm stayed rigid across the frame, blocking my path.

After ten hours on my feet in a restrictive silk gown for the VelaDrive launch, I stepped forward, expecting my husband to step aside. Instead, he gestured for his assistant to slide into the reinforced right-rear seat.

"Camila needs the back," Victor said, his tone clipped. "She has IPO documents to finish."

I glanced at the thick binder clutched to Camila’s chest, then at the stack of cabin material samples in my own arms. I had revised those interior prototypes eleven times for tonight’s presentation.

"I can sit on the left," I offered.

"The side-wing airbags are only installed on the right," Victor replied, turning toward the driver’s side. "Take the front."

The reinforced door slammed shut. Beyond the exhibition hall’s glass walls, towering LED screens still looped Victor’s closing speech. *Without my wife, there is no VelaDrive.* Eight years ago, I had pressed a $420,000 cashier’s check into his palm—the full proceeds from the sale of my mother’s apartment—to fund his first prototype. Tonight, he couldn’t spare three seconds to explain a seating arrangement.

I slid into the passenger seat. The dashboard screen flared to life, running its biometric scan.

Above Camila’s seating zone, a bright gold shield icon materialized. Above mine, a hollow, gray outline blinked twice and faded.

"Is this still in demo mode?" I asked, pointing at the dashboard.

Victor reached over and tapped the screen, closing the notification. "The system will auto-calibrate. We’re running late."

At 8:47 PM, the tires hummed against the asphalt of the MacArthur Causeway. I watched the bay’s neon lights blur beyond the window.

Then, the tires shrieked.

A delivery truck careened over the median, its headlights bleaching the road as it cut across our lane.

"Unavoidable collision," the automated voice announced, devoid of panic.

I braced for a hard swerve into the empty emergency lane. It never happened. The steering wheel snapped hard right. The system actively adjusted our trajectory, angling the chassis to take the brunt of the impact squarely on the front passenger side. My side.

The seatbelt slashed into my collarbone. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the rear right seat shell elevate, locking Camila into a protective cocoon. Victor’s pretensioner snapped him back into his seat.

My side-wing airbag remained flat in its casing.

"Victor!" I screamed, instinctively reaching my left hand across the console to grab his jacket.

He didn’t grab my hand. He didn’t even look at me.

Victor wrenched himself around, throwing his arms over the gap between the seats to cradle Camila’s head.

Zero point eight seconds later, my airbag finally deployed. The passenger window exploded. Concrete dust and shattered glass tore through the cabin as the car ground along the highway barrier. The screech of tearing metal drowned out everything else.

When the car finally stopped shaking, the smell of burnt rubber filled my nose. My right arm was pinned against the crushed door panel. Blood dripped from my knuckles, pooling around the diamond wedding ring wedged tightly into the deformed plastic armrest.

Victor sat up, breathing heavily. A thin red scratch marked his left temple. In the back, Camila whimpered, rubbing a swollen wrist.

Victor did not ask if I was alive. He did not ask if I could breathe.

His gaze locked on the dashboard. He barked, "System, delete public demo cache."

Thirty minutes later, the flashing red and blue lights of the emergency vehicles illuminated the wreckage. Priya, our lead safety engineer, arrived just as the paramedics began cutting me out of the tangled seatbelt.

She shoved past a firefighter, jabbing a master override key into the ruined center console.

"I’m putting the black box under judicial seal," Priya declared, her fingers flying across her diagnostic tablet. "Nobody touches this data."

They strapped me to a gurney. As they wheeled me past Priya, a line of stark white text caught my eye on her tablet screen.

*Protected Occupant Priority: Camila Torres, Level One.*

My name sat at the very bottom of the list. Level Four. Expendable.

The harsh fluorescent lights of the emergency room stung my eyes. I lay flat on the stiff hospital bed, a temporary cast securing my fractured right arm.

The door clicked shut. Victor stepped up to the rails of my bed, glancing over his shoulder to ensure Priya was out of earshot.

"You only do interior design, Isa," Victor whispered, leaning in so close I could smell the stale champagne from the launch party on his breath. "You don’t understand system testing. The logic boards are complicated."

"Complicated." The word scraped out of my throat.

"Don’t turn marital emotions into a scandal," he warned, his jaw tight. "If you make a scene over a software glitch, you’ll bankrupt a company that feeds two thousand employees."

A nurse hurried into the room, holding my ruined evening bag in her gloved hands. "Ma’am, we salvaged this from the floorboard. Do you want it?"

"Bring it here," I said.

Victor watched impatiently as I dug my good hand into the torn silk lining. I bypassed my shattered phone and pulled out a cobalt-blue leather folder. Inside, securely pressed behind a transparent sleeve, sat the original founder’s equity letter granting me fifteen percent of VelaDrive.

I didn’t tell Victor why I had brought it to the launch. I simply slid the folder beneath the blanket, pressing the stiff leather against my bruised ribs.

The door swung open again. Priya marched in, clutching a printed stack of preliminary logs.

"The priority list wasn’t a glitch," Priya stated, slapping the papers onto the rolling tray. "CEO-level access modified the protection hierarchy thirty-six hours ago."

Victor didn’t flinch. "Camila is testing staff. Her name was left over from a simulation run. It doesn’t mean anything personal."

I pushed myself up on my good elbow, ignoring the sharp pain in my chest.

"If it was only a simulation," I said, staring directly into his eyes, "why did you cover her head before the impact?"

Victor grabbed the metal bed rail. His knuckles turned stark white. He opened his mouth, but the words failed him. He refused to say the one sentence that would end this: *Because you are my wife.*

Instead, he leaned over the rail, using his broad shoulders to block Priya’s view of my face.

"Isa," Victor murmured, a dark warning lacing his tone. "Don’t ruin my company over a name."

I lifted my left hand. The overhead lights caught the dried blood caked inside the intricate setting of my wedding band.

"Then tell me," I said, loud enough for Priya to hear. "Why does the car know she’s more important than me?"

Victor’s hand jerked against the metal.
