After fifteen years of building her husband Marcus Vance's quarterback career, she was discarded for his college sweetheart. Divorced by Marcus and dismissed by her own son, she quietly accepted her settlement and vanished. Five years later, the tables have turned. While her former family finds themselves blacklisted, she has risen to become the league's youngest owner by acquiring a bankrupt franchise. Now, they are the ones begging for her mercy.

The Boiled-Chicken Wife Who Bought the Team Chapter 1

I signed him out of a bar at twenty-three, a bouncer with a cannon arm and eighteen thousand dollars of my savings riding on his first camp.

Fifteen years later he handed me a termination letter and told me to read page two.

Page two was the divorce.

His college sweetheart had walked in a week earlier with champagne and a commission structure, and by Friday she represented my husband and my son both.

My boy looked at me across the kitchen and said my boiled-chicken expertise could retire now.

So I retired it.

I packed forty-two training journals into two boxes and drove out of the city without raising my voice once.

Five years.

She booked the endorsements and skipped the rehab, and his body tore itself open twice while my son's name moved from draft boards to DUI reports.

No team will touch either of them now.

Me?

I took the settlement and the fifteen years of phone numbers nobody knew I had, and I bought a franchise everyone else had written off.

This morning their agent walked them into a conference room to pitch two undervalued assets.

They saw me at the head of the table and stopped moving in the doorway.

I opened their combine reports, read every line, and closed the folder slow.

Everything I used to do for free has a price now—and there is no number high enough.

I smoothed the edge of the clear plastic wrap over the fourth container of boiled chicken breast and quinoa. Tomorrow's away game required exact macros, a routine I had perfected over fifteen years.

The front door slammed shut. Heavy footsteps crossed the hardwood, stopping on the opposite side of the marble kitchen island.

Marcus didn't offer a greeting. He slid a folded sheet of heavy-stock paper across the counter.

The gold foil neck of a Laurent-Perrier champagne bottle poked out from the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket. Kelly's favorite brand.

"Save your strength, Del," Marcus said, his voice flat. "Turn to page two."

I kept my fingers pressed against the rim of the meal prep container.

"I haven't read page one yet," I replied.

"It's a formality," he said, shifting his weight. "Just read the back."

I picked up the paper. The bold letterhead at the top read: NOTICE OF TERMINATION OF REPRESENTATION.

My status as his sports agent, revoked.

I flipped the page over. A single line of Marcus's jagged handwriting slashed across the blank white space.

Divorce papers on page two.

I stared at the blue ink. The kitchen hummed with the low vibration of the refrigerator.

"You're firing me," I said, my tone eerily steady. "And divorcing me. In the same envelope."

"Kelly secured the new endorsement deal," Marcus replied, adjusting his cuffs. "She operates at a level you don't understand. We outgrew this setup."

"I negotiated your last three contracts," I replied, dropping the paper back onto the marble. "I built your brand when you were bouncing drunks at The Neon Room."

"That was a decade ago," he countered, leaning against the counter. "You're a glorified secretary now, Delphine. I need a shark."

"So you slept with one."

He didn't flinch. "I upgraded."

"How long?" I asked, keeping my hands resting on the island.

"Does it matter?" Marcus asked.

"It matters to me," I said.

"Six months," he admitted, showing no remorse. "Since the playoffs."

"While I was in Philadelphia, negotiating your shoe deal."

"You were failing to negotiate it," he corrected. "Kelly stepped in and closed it in three days."

"Because she offered them a cut of your royalties," I shot back. "A terrible deal for you long-term."

"It got me the billboard in Times Square," he said. "You lack vision."

"You owe me twenty percent of your current buyout," I said.

"Kelly found a loophole," he replied, tapping the stone surface. "Spousal conflict of interest. You get nothing."

"I paid for your first training camp," I reminded him. "Eighteen thousand dollars. My entire savings."

"And I gave you a mansion in the hills," he shot back. "We're even."

"We were never even, Marcus."

Footsteps pounded down the stairs. Our eighteen-year-old son, Jordan, walked into the kitchen, tossing his gym bag onto a stool.

I opened my mouth to speak, to tell my son his father was tearing our family apart.

Jordan didn't let me form the words.

"Kelly understands big business," Jordan said, not even looking at me. "Your boiled chicken skills can retire."

He reached into his hoodie pocket, pulled out a thick, glossy folder, and tossed it onto the island.

It landed right next to the carefully measured electrolytes I had portioned out for him.

The cover bore the logo of Kelly's sports management firm. Jordan's signature rested on the bottom line.

"You signed with her," I whispered.

"She got me the starting spot on the varsity roster," Jordan scoffed, grabbing an apple from the fruit bowl.

"I'm your mother," I said. "I manage your career."

"Not anymore," Jordan corrected. "Dad's right. You treat us like amateur charity cases. We need a real team behind us now."

He bit into the apple, the crunch loud and sharp in the quiet room.

"By networking?" I asked, my jaw tightening. "Or by paying off the coach?"

"By doing what it takes," Jordan sneered. "Something you refuse to do. You just sit in the kitchen weighing ounces of protein."

"That protein rebuilt your torn ACL last season," I said.

"Kelly's private clinic did that," he replied. "You just drove the car."

"How long have you known?" I asked, turning my focus fully to my son.

Jordan shrugged, tossing the apple core into the sink. "A few weeks."

"You sat at this island every morning," I said, my voice dropping. "You ate the breakfasts I made. You let me massage your knee. And you knew your father was sleeping with my rival."

"She's not your rival," Jordan laughed. "She's in a different league."

"She bought you a car, didn't she?" I asked, noticing the new key fob dangling from his gym bag.

Jordan's hand instinctively covered the keys. "It's an advance on my signing bonus."

"You're eighteen," I said. "You don't have a signing bonus."

"I do now," he smirked. "Kelly knows how to structure a contract."

"She knows how to buy loyalty," I corrected.

My husband and my son stood across from me, a united front. Two men I had built from the ground up, now dismissing me with a few strokes of a pen.

"You're both done here?" I asked.

"We are," Marcus said. "Sign the papers by Friday."

"Or what?"

"Or Kelly takes it to court, and we freeze your accounts," Marcus threatened. "Pop the cork, Jordan. Let's celebrate."

Marcus pulled the bottle from his jacket and set it on the counter. The green glass clinked against the marble.

I looked down at the meal prep container. The plastic wrap sat slightly loose on one corner.

I didn't pick up the box to throw it at them. I didn't scream.

Instead, I grabbed the roll of plastic wrap, pulled the film taut, and dragged the serrated metal edge across it.

The sharp ripping sound echoed off the tile walls.

I folded the excess plastic under the container. I pressed my knuckles into the edges, smoothing them down until the seal was airtight.

My fingertips slipped off the plastic and came to rest on the cold marble of the island.

One second.

Two seconds.

The chill of the stone seeped into my skin.

"Leave the keys to the SUV on the counter," Marcus said, misreading my silence for surrender. "Kelly is sending a moving crew for my things tomorrow."

I didn't answer him. I turned my back to the island and looked at the far corner of the kitchen.

Two empty cardboard boxes sat there, originally meant for donating old clothes.

I walked past Marcus and Jordan, ignoring the way my son rolled his eyes.

I grabbed the boxes and carried them down the hall to the study.

The heavy oak door clicked shut behind me, cutting off the sound of Marcus popping the champagne cork.

I set the boxes on the rug and pulled open the bottom drawer of my mahogany desk.

Inside sat fifteen years of handwritten training logs.

Every injury, every weakness, every hidden flaw in Marcus's and Jordan's physical and mental game lived in these pages.

I picked up the first logbook, a frayed black notebook from Marcus's rookie year.

I dropped it into the empty box. It landed with a dull thud.

I reached for the second logbook.

My hand stopped hovering over the cracked leather cover.

Written in faded red marker across the front was a sequence of numbers only I knew how to decipher.
