Chapter 6

Night fell like a blade over the werewolf realms, sharpening every shadow, every breath of wind, every heartbeat that dared to echo in the silence. And somewhere beyond the borders of the Shadow Pack, beyond Zoro's fortress walls, rage was building into a storm powerful enough to split the earth.

Morris had tasted humiliation.

And Morris Weston does not swallow humiliation.

He destroyed it.

The first village never saw him coming.

The moon hung low above the pines when Morris swept through it like a nightmare set free, his wolf form towering, massive, silver fur streaked with the blood of warriors who tried to slow him. His voice, distorted by rage, thundered through the night.

"Where is she?"

No one could answer.

Some could not speak. Some were too terrified. Some were already dead.

Those who survived whispered later that his eyes did not hold sanity anymore, just a hollow devotion twisted into obsession, and a hatred that burned so bright it could have melted stone.

He tore through the second village with the same madness.

By the time he reached the third, packs were already evacuating women and children. Fires rose behind him like pillars of warning. Wolves cowered. Elders trembled. Even the bravest warriors chose silence over risking his wrath.

Morris didn't care who he hurt.

He only cared who he lost.

"Samantha," he growled into the night, voice cracking with a violent possessiveness. "You can't hide from me. Not from the one who loves you. Not from the one you belong to."

His claws closed around the throat of a trembling scout.

Where most would see a broken man, the scout saw something worse...

a man who believed pain was affection, who believed blindness was devotion, who believed kidnapping was salvation.

Morris leaned close, nose flaring with feral fury.

"I know who has her," he whispered. "I can smell him on her skin. Zoro... that bastard touched what's mine."

And then he let the scout live, because terror spread better from survivors than corpses.

His army followed behind him, rogue wolves, outcasts, beasts loyal only to fear and his promise of carnage. Together they carved a bloody path across the territories.

He was no longer the handsome warrior.

No longer the respected protector.

He was the monster Samantha had run from.

And he was coming.

Inside the Shadow Palace, Samantha could feel the darkness tightening across every border like a tightening noose. Even without eyes, she could sense the change, the sharp whispers, the heavier footsteps, the tension in Zoro's voice whenever he spoke to his generals.

War was coming.

Because of her.

She curled her fingers in the blanket, biting her lip to keep her breathing steady. She didn't want to be afraid. She didn't want to be the burden everyone whispered about. But fear had a way of lodging in her bones. She had lived with it for too long.

Still... whenever Zoro entered the room, something inside her calmed.

Tonight he stepped inside again, slow and deliberate, as if trying not to startle her. The air shifted, the scent of pine and storm, the aura of a king trying and failing to hide concern.

Her heart picked up.

"You're awake," he said softly, a tone she had only ever heard directed at her.

She turned her face toward him. "Something's wrong. Everyone is... tense."

Zoro exhaled, a low rumble in his chest. "Morris left me a message."

Samantha stiffened. "A message?"

He placed something on the bedside table. She heard the faint clink of metal, armor? A weapon?

But no. The smell told her everything.

Blood.

Her breath faltered. "Zoro..."

"He slaughtered an entire border patrol," the Alpha King said, voice colder than ice yet trembling beneath. "And he left a warning soaked in their blood."

"What did it say?"

Zoro hesitated. "That you are his. And that if I don't return you..."

He moved closer, his presence wrapping around her like a shield she silently clung to.

"...everything I rule will burn."

Samantha's hand trembled. Zoro's fingers unexpectedly brushed hers, steadying her.

"We will not let him take you," he said.

We.

Not I.

Not they.

We.

It warmed her chest in a way she wasn't ready for. A way that terrified her more than Morris ever could.

"But Zoro..." she whispered, voice trembling. "He will kill everyone. He'll destroy everything you've built. Maybe... maybe you should let me go to stop him."

Instantly, Zoro gripped her wrist, not harsh, not controlling, but with a desperate intensity that shook her.

"Don't say that again," he growled.

She swallowed. "I can't be the reason people die."

"You are not a weapon," he hissed. "You are not a bargaining chip. And you will never be something I hand over to a madman."

The last word came out like a snarl.

Samantha felt the heat of his breath near her ear, the tension in his muscles, the war inside him. This ruthless Alpha King, the one feared across the realms-was unravelling... for her.

"Zoro..." she whispered, trying to pull back, though she didn't know if she meant it.

But he didn't release her. Instead, he slowly lifted her hand to his chest.

She felt the hard planes of his body.

The steady, powerful heartbeat.

The warmth she'd started associating with safety.

"Do you feel that?" he asked, voice barely controlled.

"Yes."

"That is the only reason Morris will never touch you again."

She swallowed again. "Your heart?"

A muscle in his jaw flexed. "My promise."

Her breath tangled with his for a moment too long.

Then...

A roar shook the fortress walls.

Wolves howled in fear.

Metal clashed.

Someone shouted Zoro's name from beyond the doors.

Samantha flinched violently, reaching for him.

He caught her instantly, pulling her against his chest. "Easy. I'm here."

"Zoro, what is that?"

He didn't answer at first. The silence stretched.

Then his voice came low, lethal.

"Morris has found us."

Samantha gasped, clutching his tunic.

And that was when the second roar echoed, closer, monstrous, vibrating the ground beneath their feet.

Zoro tightened his grip on her.

"He's not at the gates," he said.

"He's inside the territory."

Her heart stopped.

"Zoro... what do we do?"

He lifted her chin with surprising tenderness.

"We face him," he whispered. "Together."

Another roar. Another tremor. Another howl of panic.

But Zoro didn't move away from her.

He didn't reach for his weapon.

He didn't call guards.

He leaned in closer.

And in the darkness she lived in, she felt him-the warmth of his breath, the soft brush of his lips near her temple.

A silent vow.

A forbidden promise.

Then he pulled her into his arms, lifting her with ease.

"Hold on to me, Samantha."

And she did-because the world was tipping into chaos, darkness, and blood.

And the only safe place left...

was the Alpha King's heartbeat.

Then the doors exploded inward.
