Chapter 3

Luke drove me to the signing in a car that probably cost more than I'd earned in the past three years.

I know that because I spent the first four minutes of the journey trying not to touch anything.

The leather was immaculate. The windows were tinted. The partition between the front and back seats was made of glass so clean it was nearly invisible, which meant I could see Luke's eyes occasionally finding mine in the rearview mirror with the specific attention of someone who had been told to look after me and was taking the assignment seriously.

I lasted four minutes before I spoke.

“Tell me about him,” I said.

Luke's eyes met mine in the mirror. Brief and assessing. Then he faced forward.

“What would you like to know?”

“Everything,” I said. “I'm about to sign my name next to his. I'd like to understand what his name actually means.”

A pause.

Then Luke talked.

He told me about Blackwood Industries the way someone talked about a place they had worked for four years and understood from the inside, not the version the press releases offered, but the version you understood when you had seen it function under pressure. There were three divisions.

BlackTech, the arm that built and owned the software infrastructure running approximately thirty percent of the UK's public sector digital systems. When people in London booked an NHS appointment online or filed a tax return, there was a significant chance the architecture underneath it was Arthur's.

Blackwood Infrastructure, the oldest arm, inherited from his father, holding long term contracts in urban development and telecommunications across the UK and Europe. The fiber network currently running under significant portions of central London.

Blackwood Capital, the investment arm.The foundation of the generational wealth.

I listened and watched London change outside the window. The streets I knew gave way to wider roads and bigger buildings and the specific architecture of a city that had been built by people with serious money.

“And him?” I said when he finished. “Not the company, the actual man.”

Luke was quiet for a moment.

“He is the most demanding person I have ever worked for,” he said. “And the fairest.”

I waited.

“He expects excellence,” Luke continued. “He doesn't make promises he doesn't keep. He pays well too. He doesn't ask anyone to do something he wouldn't do himself.” A pause. “He is not easy but he is consistent. In my experience, consistency is rarer and more valuable than easy.”

I looked out the window.

“Does he ever smile?” I asked.

The rearview mirror caught Luke's expression, something that might have been amusement, controlled immediately.

“Occasionally,” he said. “When he thinks no one is watching.”

The café appeared ahead. Luke pulled over. He got out and opened my door, smooth, efficient, like everything he did and I stepped onto the pavement and straightened my jacket.

Through the glass I could already see the back of Arthur's head, still and composed. A man who had been waiting and was not bothered by the waiting.

“Luke,” I said.

“Miss Carter.”

“Is he what they say he is?”

A pause. Something shifted in Luke's expression.

“What do they say he is?” he asked.

“Cold,” I said. “Ruthless. The kind of man who only does things if they benefit him.”

Luke looked at me for a long moment.

“He's here, isn't he,” Luke said quietly. “He didn't have to be. He could have sent me the contract.”

I looked at the café window. At Arthur's still and composed profile.

“He came himself,” Luke said. Then, even quieter, “He's been coming by himself for a lot of things, lately.”

He stepped back. I pushed open the café door.

Arthur looked up when I sat down across from him. Dark eyes, which were completely unreadable. The contract was on the table, organized with the precision of someone who had never shuffled papers in his life.

He slid it across without preamble.

I looked at it. Then at him.

“Questions first,” I said.

He nodded once.

I asked everything. The public appearances, how many, what kind, what was expected of me. The living arrangements, separate wings, my own space, access to everything I needed. The money, Kevin's treatment cleared in full, my nine creditors settled, the monthly allowance, the end of year settlement.

I stopped at the debt.

“All of it?” I said.

“All of it,” he confirmed. His voice didn't change. Like clearing the debts of a woman he'd met twenty-four hours ago was a completely ordinary Tuesday.

I thought about the nine creditors. I thought about Mrs. Osei on the third floor of my old building who had lent me eight hundred pounds, eighteen months ago and hadn't asked about it since but whose eyes did something complicated every time I passed her in the corridor.

I thought about Kevin.

“There's one more thing,” Arthur said.

He reached into his jacket. Set a second document on the table, then a card.

Black, matte with Rose Carter writing in Silver letters on it.

My name,on his card. As if I already belonged in his world and someone had simply forgotten to tell me.

“What is this?” I said.

“Compensation,” he said.”'For what happened yesterday. The job,the..” A pause. Something crossed his face, brief, controlled. “What happened in the café was a consequence of something that had nothing to do with you. You paid for it anyway. That document addresses what was taken from you.”

I stared at it.

“And the card?”

“No limit,” he said. “For whatever you need. I am not always available. The card removes the gap.”

I picked up the card. Turned it over, then set it back down.

“It's not a gift,” he said. Reading something in my expression I hadn't meant to show. “It's logistics.”

“Right,” I said. “Logistics.”

I looked at the card, the contract, the second document, the man across the table from me who had turned up at a hospital the night before and offered to fix the thing I'd been trying to fix for ten years, as if solving impossible problems was simply what he did on Tuesdays.

I picked up the pen and signed.I put the card in my bag, telling myself I would never use it.I would admit I told myself a lot of things that day.

While I was signing those documents in a café in the City, legal papers were being delivered to a flat in Canary Wharf.

The woman who answered the door read the first page. Then the second, her hands were steady, her face neutral.

She set the papers down on her kitchen counter and looked out the window at London below.

She had expected this.

What she hadn't expected, what she was only now beginning to calculate, was that Arthur had moved faster than she'd anticipated. The lawsuit was already filed.

She picked up her phone and called a number.

“He filed,” she said.

“Do you want to pull back?” the voice on the other end said.

She was quiet for a moment.

“No,” she said. “I want everything you can find on Rose Carter, her brother, parents, where they came from and why they died.”

A pause on the other end. Then: “That might take some digging.”

“Then dig,” she said.

She ended the call.

She moved to the window, picked up her coffee, took a slow sip while looking at the city below.

She turned her head, looking back at the papers on the coffee table, then at the name on it Diana. He had known it was her but she had come too far to give up.
