Chapter 22

The elevator resumed its descent.

But the moment was gone.

Whatever had ignited between them seconds ago was now replaced with something colder.

Danger.

Zara's fingers curled slightly at her sides. "Access how?"

Adrian's expression was unreadable. "Security override attempt. Someone used an internal clearance code."

Her pulse spiked. "Internal?"

"Yes."

Which meant this wasn't random.

This wasn't a burglary.

This was deliberate.

The Penthouse

By the time they arrived, security had locked down the entire floor.

Two guards stood outside the entrance. Another monitored the corridor cameras.

Adrian moved first, scanning the area with sharp, controlled precision.

Zara followed, heart pounding.

Inside, nothing appeared disturbed.

Furniture untouched. Glass intact. Silence undisturbed.

"Are we sure someone tried to get in?" she asked.

Adrian didn't answer immediately.

He walked toward the study.

Paused.

Then pushed the door open.

Zara felt the shift instantly.

The desk drawers were slightly open.

One file missing.

Her stomach dropped.

"The inheritance clause," Adrian said quietly.

"That's what they were looking for?"

"Yes."

Not jewelry. Not money.

The contract.

The deadline.

The leverage.

Zara swallowed. "Victor?"

"He wouldn't risk coming personally." Adrian's eyes darkened. "But he's escalating."

A soft vibration came from her phone.

Unknown number.

She hesitated before answering.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then-

"You should tell your husband to surrender gracefully."

The voice was disguised.

Calm.

Mocking.

Zara's grip tightened. "Who is this?"

A low chuckle.

"Thirty days is a long time to stay safe."

The line went dead.

Her blood ran cold.

Adrian stepped toward her instantly. "What did they say?"

She repeated it.

His jaw hardened so sharply she thought it might crack.

"They're not just pressuring the board anymore," she whispered.

"They're targeting you."

The Breaking Point

Adrian walked toward the window, fists clenched.

For the first time since she met him, he didn't look controlled.

He looked furious.

"They crossed the line," he said quietly.

Zara stepped closer. "Adrian-"

"No."

His voice was low. Dangerous.

"This was business. Corporate maneuvering. Fine."

He turned toward her.

"But threatening my wife?"

The words wrapped around her chest.

Not strategic. Not performative.

Possessive.

Real.

"You can't go after them recklessly," she warned softly.

"I won't."

That calm tone worried her more.

He pulled out his phone.

"I want every access log pulled from the building system. Cross-check internal codes. And freeze all remote credentials linked to the board."

A pause.

"And discreetly increase personal security on Zara. No visible detail changes."

He ended the call.

"You're assigning guards to me."

"I'm assigning protection."

"I don't want to live like a hostage."

His eyes softened - just slightly.

"You're not a hostage."

"Then don't cage me."

Silence lingered between them.

The air thick.

Heavy.

Finally, he stepped closer.

"So what do you suggest?" he asked quietly.

She looked up at him.

"Stop reacting."

That caught him off guard.

"They want you angry. They want you distracted."

"And you?"

"I want you focused."

He studied her carefully.

"You're not afraid?"

"I am."

Honest.

Raw.

"But I trust you."

Those three words hit harder than the threat.

Adrian exhaled slowly.

Trust.

Something he rarely received. And almost never deserved.

The Shift

The tension between them changed.

It wasn't just heat anymore.

It was unity.

Zara stepped closer until only inches separated them.

"We don't let them divide us," she said softly. "That's what they want."

His hand lifted instinctively, resting at her waist.

"They underestimated you," he murmured.

"They underestimated us."

That word settled between them.

Us.

His thumb traced lightly along her side.

"You walked into that boardroom today and defended me."

"You're my husband."

The simplicity of it stunned him.

He leaned down slightly, forehead almost touching hers.

"This was supposed to be temporary."

"I know."

"And yet..."

His voice lowered.

"It doesn't feel temporary anymore."

Her breath caught.

The city lights shimmered outside the window, casting golden reflections across his face.

"Adrian," she whispered.

He kissed her.

Not rushed. Not urgent.

But deep.

Deliberate.

Claiming.

This wasn't part of a contract.

This wasn't obligation.

This was choice.

When he pulled back, his voice was rougher.

"If this turns darker, if they come harder-"

"We stand," she finished.

Together.

A knock interrupted them again.

Security.

Adrian opened the door slightly.

"Sir," the guard said, "we traced the access attempt."

Adrian's expression sharpened.

"And?"

"It came from inside Vaughn Enterprises."

Silence.

Not just an external attack.

Someone inside the company was helping Victor.

The war wasn't just outside.

It was in his walls.

Adrian closed the door slowly.

"They have someone on the inside."

Zara's heart pounded.

"So what do we do?"

His eyes darkened with resolve.

"We flush them out."
