Chapter 3

Chapter Three

The Contract

Lancaster Tower was everything I'd expected and nothing I was prepared for.

Fifty floors of glass and steel, positioned at the center of the financial district like it had grown there by geological inevitability. The lobby was cold marble and quiet power. People moved with purpose. No one looked up.

I'd worn my best suit. Navy. Double-breasted. I'd designed it myself, three years ago, for a presentation that had won me my first major contract. I needed something that felt like armor.

Lucas's assistant — a composed woman named Clara who managed to be simultaneously warm and impenetrable — met me at the elevator.

"Mr. Lancaster is ready for you."

He was standing when I entered the boardroom, jacket on, looking out at the city. Three lawyers arranged themselves along one side of the table like a row of careful birds. A thick document sat in the center, tabbed with colored markers.

He turned when I walked in. His eyes moved over my suit for exactly one second.

"You came," he said.

"I said I'd think about it. I thought about it."

"And?"

I crossed to the table, pulled out the chair across from the lawyers, and sat down. "I have conditions."

One of the lawyers shifted. Lucas didn't move.

"Three," I said. "First — Bennett Studio remains entirely mine. No acquisition, no interference, no advisory role from Lancaster Group. Second — I continue to attend industry events independently. My professional identity is not absorbed into the Lancaster brand." I looked at him directly. "Third — when this ends, it ends cleanly. No prolonged legal process. No public narrative that positions me as the one who failed."

A silence.

"Agreed," Lucas said. "All three."

The lawyers began adjusting the document. I read every page. It took forty minutes. Lucas sat at the head of the table and worked on his phone without impatience, without performance — like he'd genuinely accounted for the time.

When I got to Clause 14 — Neither party shall develop romantic attachment or act in any manner inconsistent with the business nature of this arrangement — I paused.

Looked up.

He was watching me.

"This clause," I said.

"It's protective," he said. "For both of us."

I held his gaze for a beat. Then I kept reading.

When I finished, a lawyer placed a pen beside the document. Elegant. Black lacquer. The kind of pen used to sign things that matter.

I reached for it at the same moment Lucas extended his hand to adjust the document's position.

Our fingers touched.

Half a second. Less.

He withdrew his hand. I kept my face neutral. I signed.

Lucas signed beneath my name. Clara witnessed. The lawyers collected their copies.

And then the room was quiet and it was just the two of us and the fact of what we'd just done.

"The marriage license appointment is Friday," he said. "City hall. Nine AM."

"Fine."

He studied me for a moment. Something in his expression was almost — careful.

"Sophia."

It was the first time he'd said my name like it was a word, not a label.

"This arrangement will work," he said. "Provided we both remember what it is."

"I remember exactly what it is." I picked up my bag. "Congratulations on your upcoming marriage, Mr. Lancaster."

I walked out.

I didn't let myself breathe until I was in the elevator. Then I looked down at my own hand — the one that had touched his — and pressed it flat against my leg.

Remember what it is, I told myself.

I'd remember.
