Chapter 4

Seven o'clock on Wednesday evening, the spreadsheet on my laptop screen glowed with the exact amount of money missing from our joint trust. I sat on the living room sofa, highlighting line after line of unauthorized transfers routed through shell companies in Delaware.

The front door clicked shut.

"Close the computer, Clara," Marcus announced from the foyer. He dropped his keys into the silver bowl on the console table. "I brought you something."

I kept my eyes on the screen, tracing a fifty-thousand-dollar withdrawal. "I'm busy."

Marcus crossed the hardwood floor and stopped right in front of the coffee table. He tossed a black velvet jewelry box onto the glass surface. It landed with a soft thud, right next to my legal notepad.

"Happy belated anniversary," he said, loosening his silk tie. "I know I missed the dinner last month. The Miami summit prep kept me tied up. This should make up for it."

I stared at the black box. The gold embossed lettering on the lid caught the light from the chandelier. Le Reve Boutique. The exact same designer store Chloe had taken Mia to yesterday.

Before I could even reach for the lid, rapid footsteps pounded down the oak staircase.

Mia sprinted into the living room, her eyes locked on the coffee table. She shoved past Marcus and snatched the velvet box right out from under my nose.

"My necklace!" Mia squealed, popping the lid open. A heavy, multi-tiered diamond choker rested on the white satin interior. "Chloe actually got it! She promised she would loan me this exact piece for the prom!"

I reached out and pushed my laptop screen down. The hinges clicked shut, cutting off the glow of the spreadsheet.

"Give me that," Marcus snapped. He snatched the box out of his daughter's hands, snapping the lid closed. His jaw tightened as he shot a nervous glance in my direction. "Mia, stop grabbing things that don't belong to you. This is for your mother."

"No it isn't!" Mia argued, planting her hands on her hips. "Chloe texted me an hour ago. She said the courier was dropping off the prom jewelry at the house so I could try it on with my dress tonight."

"It's a misunderstanding," Marcus backpedaled, his voice rising in volume. He shoved the box toward me. "Chloe just recommended the style to me. We must have bought duplicates. She handles my personal shopping, Clara, you know this."

I didn't take the box. Instead, I picked up my phone from the sofa cushion and opened the smart home application.

"A duplicate," I repeated, my tone perfectly flat.

"Yes," Marcus insisted, his face flushing a dull red. "I bought this myself. From the jeweler downtown."

I tapped the screen, pulling up the driveway security feed from ten minutes ago. I turned the phone around and held it up to his face.

The high-definition video played in a continuous loop. A courier in a black uniform stood on our front porch, handing this exact velvet box to Marcus. The delivery bag swinging from the courier's wrist bore the massive, unmistakable logo of Le Reve Boutique.

"The jeweler downtown," I said. "Or Chloe's favorite VIP boutique?"

Marcus stared at the screen. The muscle in his cheek twitched. "I asked her to pick it up for me. I didn't have time to go myself."

"She didn't pick it up for you," Mia interrupted, rolling her eyes. "She bought it for me. Why would Dad give you diamonds when you just wear sweatpants all day?"

A loud crash shattered the tense silence.

Leo stormed into the living room and kicked the metal wastebasket sitting beside the armchair. The bin tipped over, spilling crumpled paper and empty water bottles across the Persian rug.

"Why do you always do this?" Leo yelled, pointing a finger at me. "Dad tries to do something nice, and you just sit there interrogating him!"

I stood up from the sofa. "Your father is lying to my face, Leo."

"Who cares!" Leo shouted, stepping closer. He wore the new limited-edition sneakers Chloe had bought him that morning. "You're always trying to start a fight. You just want to ruin the family atmosphere because you're miserable."

"Leo, calm down," Marcus ordered, though his tone lacked any real authority. He turned back to me, holding the velvet box out again like a peace offering. "Clara, just take the necklace. Let's move past this."

I looked at the black box in his hand. Then I looked at the two teenagers glaring at me, fully indoctrinated by the woman sleeping with my husband.

I snatched the box from Marcus's grip.

"Finally," Mia muttered. "Just give it to me. It matches my silver heels."

I didn't hand it to her. I turned around and walked straight into the open-concept kitchen.

"Clara, where are you going?" Marcus demanded, his heavy footsteps following close behind me.

I stopped at the edge of the marble island. The stainless steel sink gleamed under the recessed lighting. I popped the lid of the velvet box open, pinched the heavy diamond choker between my thumb and index finger, and pulled it free from the satin.

"Wait, what are you doing?" Mia shrieked, running into the kitchen.

I dropped the diamond necklace directly into the sink drain. The heavy stones clattered against the metal basin, slipping perfectly down the dark hole.

"Are you insane?" Marcus roared, lunging forward.

I reached out and flipped the wall switch.

The garbage disposal erupted with a deafening, mechanical scream. The grinding blades caught the metal chain first, snapping it into pieces. Then the diamonds hit the gears. A horrific screeching noise filled the kitchen as the industrial motor chewed through the expensive jewelry. Sparks flashed briefly in the dark drain.

"Turn it off!" Mia sobbed, covering her ears. "My necklace!"

I let the motor run for ten full seconds. The screeching turned into a dull, grinding crunch. I grabbed a pitcher of dirty dishwater resting on the counter and poured it straight down the drain, washing the pulverized remnants of Chloe's bribe into the city sewer system.

I flicked the switch off. The silence that followed was absolute.

Marcus stared at the sink, his chest heaving, his face pale with shock. "That was a thirty-thousand-dollar piece of jewelry."

"No," I corrected him, turning my back on the sink. "That was an insult."

I walked back to the living room coffee table. I picked up my legal notepad, revealing the thick stack of printed papers underneath. The document I had finalized right before Marcus walked through the front door.

I picked up the papers and carried them back to the kitchen island. I slapped the stack down on the marble counter, right in front of Marcus.

"What is this?" Marcus asked, his voice shaking with suppressed rage.

"Read it," I said.

Marcus glared at me, then looked down at the document. His eyes scanned the top of the page. The color drained completely from his face, his jaw dropping open as he read the bold, capitalized header of the approved asset freeze injunction.
