Chapter 6

At first, my body barely obeyed me. My legs trembled like overcooked pasta, my arms hung heavy, foreign, as if they belonged to someone else. Every motion hurt—sharp, aching pain that made me want to collapse—but I forced myself forward anyway. Because I knew the truth: if I stayed in that hospital bed, if I gave in, I would shatter all over again.

And through it all, Sergio was there.

Every single day.

He arrived each morning with coffee, dark and bitter, exactly the way I’d always preferred it. He steadied me during the slow, painful stretches of therapy, guiding me down endless corridors with patience I didn’t deserve. When my knees buckled, he caught me. When frustration broke me into tears, he never turned his head or pretended not to see. He stayed. Always.

“You’re tougher than you think,” he’d murmur as his arm held me upright. “Lorraine, you can do this. You’re stronger than pain.”

Sometimes, the urge to scream at him nearly consumed me. To demand why he abandoned me years ago, why he disappeared without a single word, leaving me to pick up the ruins alone. But deep down, I already knew there was a reason. And one night, under the muted glow of the hospital garden lights, he finally gave me that reason.

“I never stopped loving you,” Sergio confessed, voice low but unwavering. “That’s why I stayed away. Because back then, I wasn’t enough. I was drowning in my own problems, and I refused to drag you under with me.”

The words stabbed me deeper than I wanted to admit. I looked at him, throat burning. “But you still left,” I whispered. “You left me to fight through everything—alone.”

His shoulders slumped, hands rubbing together as he stared at the ground. “I know. And I’ll regret it for the rest of my life. But when I saw you again—broken, after that accident—I couldn’t disappear this time. I did everything I could to keep you safe. Everything.”

The weight of his words settled heavy between us. I frowned. “Safe? Safe from what?”

This time, his eyes didn’t flinch away. “I faked your death.”

My breath caught like ice in my lungs. “What... what did you just say?”

“I told the hospital to declare you dead. To Dominic. To everyone.” His voice was deliberate, firm. He leaned forward, gaze locking into mine. “Because I knew the moment Dominic realized you were alive, he’d hunt you down. And I wasn’t going to let him destVictor you again.”

The pounding in my chest was deafening. “So he... really believes I’m gone?”

Sergio gave a grim nod. “He didn’t even visit you, not once. He just signed the forms, claimed what was yours, and never looked back. But as far as he knows, Lorraine Beaumont is buried. Which means you’ve been given something rare: a second life.”

I didn’t know whether to scream, sob, or laugh bitterly at the madness of it all. I only sat there, staring at the man who once broke my heart—now the same man determined to shield it.

“So what happens now?” My voice was fragile, trembling with both fear and curiosity.

Sergio’s lips curved into a faint smile. “Now? We start over. We change everything.”

I swallowed hard, my voice cracking. “Why, Sergio? Why would you go to such extremes for me?”

He reached across the small space between us, his warm hand enveloping mine. “Because my love for you never died, Lorraine. Not for a single day.”

My chest ached at his confession.

We were only nineteen when we fell into each other’s orbit. Reckless, wild, completely wrapped in love. He dreamed of becoming a doctor and saving lives around the globe with Doctors Without Borders. I dreamed of creating a beauty empire, my name stamped across bottles and lipsticks, an empire I could call my own. Together, we believed we were invincible.

Until life proved otherwise.

His father’s cancer hit like a storm. Fast. Merciless. Sergio had no choice but to abandon everything—his schooling, his future, even me—to care for him and keep their small clinic alive. We promised each other that one day we’d reconnect. That no matter the years, we’d find our way back. I waited. I held on. But eventually, Dominic entered my life. And I convinced myself it was destiny. That Sergio had been my first love, but Dominic was meant to stay forever.

God, how cruelly mistaken I was.

Sergio admitted later he didn’t even know I had married until he stumbled across a newspaper clipping passed around by distant relatives. The sight of me in a wedding gown nearly destVictored him. So he buried the heartbreak under endless hours of work, threw himself into medicine, and clawed his way to the top as one of the best trauma surgeons in upstate New York.

And then fate twisted the knife.

One snowy night, after years apart, our paths crossed again—except I was unconscious, drenched in blood, hanging by a thread.

“I thought you were lost to me forever,” his voice thick with emotion. “But when I saw you wheeled in on that stretcher, I made a vow: I’d never lose you again. That’s why I did what I did. That’s why I let the world think you were gone.”

I couldn’t hold back the tears this time. They streamed down my face, burning hot trails as he spoke. And I didn’t know what words could possibly answer him. All I knew was that my heart, shattered into jagged fragments, was now being handed back piece by piece by the same man who once broke it.

---

Reinventing myself wasn’t easy, but Sergio had connections. He called in favors, tugged on invisible strings, and within weeks, Lorraine Beaumont was officially dead. In her place, a new name was carved into existence: Marina Vega.

“I like it,” I told him, turning the new ID card over in my hands. “It feels strong. Untouchable.”

“It is,” he said with conviction. “Just like you.”

Once I was discharged, I moved into Sergio’s modest apartment. It was simple, quiet, hidden away in a sleepy neighborhood where no one asked questions. Exactly what I needed.

The first thing I did was transform my appearance. Makeup had always been my craft—my weapon. I understood contour, corrections, prosthetics from old freelance gigs. Staring into the mirror, I reshaped my face piece by piece. My cheekbones cut sharper now, my eyes widened with lenses and shadow, my lips fuller with a different liner. The scar across my temple vanished under flawless layers.

A stranger looked back at me.

And for the first time in years, I felt like that stranger was who I was meant to be.

“This isn’t cosmetics,” I told Sergio, my voice steady. “This is battle armor.”

He chuckled softly from the doorway, arms folded. “You’re terrifying when you talk like that.”

I smirked. “Good.”

---

Day after day, I pushed myself harder. Running laps until my lungs burned. Lifting weights until my arms shook. Sergio even arranged for one of his police friends to train me in self-defense. At night, I studied—obsessively. Digging into every detail about Dominic and Daniela. Their companies. Their holdings. Their weaknesses.

I was no longer simply recovering. I was rebuilding. Reforging.

And when the time came, I would rise—not as the broken woman they left behind, but as the rebirth they never saw coming.

As Marina Vega.

And I was coming for them.
