Chapter 1

I cut my business trip short, desperate to surprise my husband, Adrian. I’d missed his golden eyes and warm embrace during those three days in Manhattan. He was a dragon – the powerful heir to the Blackthorn clan – and I, Victoria Sterling, was his supposedly human wife. Or so we all thought.

The penthouse was dark when I arrived. Strange. Adrian always left lights on. I followed a faint golden glow to our bedroom door, heart fluttering with hope. Candles? A surprise?

I swung it open. My world shattered.

There stood Adrian, my dragon husband, golden scales shimmering across his chest, wings half-unfurled. Facing him, foreheads touching as their breaths mingled in a swirling, intimate dance, was Sophia – my best friend. Her own iridescent scales gleamed. They were performing the sacred Blackthorn mating ritual. Right in our bed.

"No," I whispered.

They broke apart. Adrian’s gaze was coldly detached. Sophia looked smug.

"Victoria. You're early." His voice held no remorse.

Agony tore through me. Silver scales erupted violently across my skin – the dormant dragon blood he’d always dismissed as "too diluted." Uncontrollable ice-fire exploded from my palms, shattering our room. He called me weak. Human. A business transaction. Sophia flaunted her fresh mating mark.

Days later, before the cold Blackthorn Council, they declared my dragon heritage "inferior" and "unstable" after a blood trial showed its silvery sheen. Sophia twisted the knife, whispering cruel confessions of their long betrayal. Adrian watched, indifferent.

Then, something deeper broke. My silver scales turned black. The ice-fire in my chest flickered... and died.

As I collapsed onto the cold ancestral vault floor, the elders' whispers echoed: "Her dragon spirit is dying."

...

I cut my business trip short, eager to surprise Adrian. Three days in Manhattan negotiating contracts had left me homesick, missing my husband's golden eyes and warm embrace. The elevator ascended to our penthouse, and I smiled thinking of how he'd welcome me home.

The doors opened to darkness and silence. Strange. Adrian always left the entryway light on when I traveled.

"Adrian?" I called, setting down my suitcase. No answer.

I slipped off my heels, padding across the marble floor. Our spacious penthouse felt oddly still, yet there was an energy in the air—a vibration I couldn't place. A faint golden glow spilled from beneath our bedroom door.

Candles, perhaps? My heart quickened. Had he somehow known I was coming home early?

I reached for the handle, anticipation tingling through me. The door swung open, and my world collapsed.

Adrian—my husband, my everything—stood in the center of our bedroom, his magnificent body partially transformed. Golden scales shimmered across his bare chest, his dragon wings half-extended in an intimate display I'd only seen in our most private moments. But he wasn't alone.

Sophia Chen—my best friend, my confidante—faced him, her own partial transformation revealing iridescent scales across her shoulders. Their foreheads touched as Adrian exhaled a stream of golden dragon breath that mingled with hers, twisting and binding together in the sacred mating ritual I'd only read about in the ancient Blackthorn texts.

The air left my lungs. My heart stopped.

"No," I whispered, the word barely audible even to my own ears.

They broke apart, turning toward me with expressions that shifted from shock to something worse—Adrian's cold detachment, Sophia's smug satisfaction.

"Victoria." Adrian's voice held no warmth, no guilt, no shame. "You're early."

Something broke inside me. A dam I hadn't known existed suddenly ruptured, releasing a flood of ice and fire through my veins. Pain seared beneath my skin as silver scales erupted across my arms, spreading rapidly. The transformation I'd never experienced before—the dragon blood Adrian had dismissed as too diluted to matter—surged through me with violent force.

"What's happening to me?" I gasped, watching in horror and fascination as my hands changed, nails extending into gleaming claws.

Ice-blue fire burst from my palms, shooting across the room in uncontrolled arcs. The curtains ignited, the glass of picture frames shattered, and frost patterns crawled rapidly across the ceiling. The temperature plummeted as my rage and pain manifested physically.

Adrian stepped forward, his expression hardening. "Control yourself, Victoria."

"Control myself?" My voice didn't sound like my own—deeper, resonating with power I'd never felt before. "I find you performing the sacred mating ritual with my best friend in OUR bedroom, and you tell me to control myself?"

Another blast of frost-fire exploded from me, shattering the mirror above our dresser. The fragments hung suspended in the air for a heartbeat before crashing down.

"This was inevitable," Adrian said coldly. "Our marriage was never about love. I needed your family's business connections, nothing more."

Each word was a dagger. Five years of marriage, reduced to a business transaction.

"You're just a weak human pretending to have dragon blood," he continued, gesturing dismissively at my transformation. "This pathetic display changes nothing."

Sophia stepped forward, her lips curved in a cruel smile. She tilted her head, deliberately exposing her neck where a fresh mating mark glowed golden against her skin.

"He's chosen a real dragon, Victoria," she purred. "Someone worthy of the Blackthorn legacy."

My former best friend—the woman who'd held my hand through every challenge, who'd been my bridesmaid, who knew all my secrets and fears—had betrayed me in the most profound way possible.

The room temperature dropped further as my newfound power responded to my shattered heart. Ice crystals formed in the air around us, and the frost-fire in my hands intensified, reflecting in Adrian's cold, golden eyes.

"Get out," he commanded, positioning himself protectively in front of Sophia. "Before you embarrass yourself further."

But as the ice spread across the walls of what had once been our sanctuary, I realized with sudden clarity: I wasn't the one who should be leaving.
