Chapter 5

At eleven forty, I walked out of the medical wing in a gray coat over my hospital clothes.

Walking was generous. I leaned against the wall and dragged my right foot every third step while my heart hammered too fast inside my damaged chest.

Torrance, the junior guard on night duty, lifted his flashlight.

"Where are you going?"

"Courtyard."

"Alpha ordered you confined."

"He ordered me to give him an answer by morning. I am thinking."

Torrance looked me over. I was pale, wolf-less, stitched together, and visibly weak. He saw no escape risk.

"Five minutes," he muttered. "If you collapse, I'm not carrying you."

"You were never good at carrying responsibility."

He scowled but stepped aside.

Rain hammered the grounds outside.

I crossed the courtyard slowly, letting the storm erase my scent. The route to the southern tree line took me past the main house.

Warm light glowed through the dining room windows.

I should have kept walking.

Instead, I looked.

Knox sat on the sofa near the fireplace. Theo was beside him with a plate balanced on his knees. Bianca wore one of my cream cashmere sweaters and cut Theo's steak into smaller pieces while he complained about the size.

"There," she said, passing him the plate. "No excuses now."

Theo smiled.

Knox laughed.

The sound reached me through a cracked window.

"You spoil him," Knox said.

"Someone has to," Bianca teased.

Her hand rested on his knee.

His covered it.

"You are safe here," he told her.

I stood in freezing rain with fresh stitches beneath my coat while the man who had denied me the antidote promised another woman safety inside the home I had paid to rebuild.

The last argument inside me ended.

I walked away.

Every step toward the pines stripped another piece of the estate from me. The east tower I had paid to reinforce disappeared behind the rain. The training field where I taught Theo to hold a wooden blade vanished into darkness. Even the stone path had been my project after Knox complained the old gravel turned to mud every spring.

I had spent years making the territory easier for everyone else to live in. Leaving it should have felt like losing a home. Instead, the farther I moved from the windows, the easier it became to breathe.

My heart disagreed. Halfway across the lower lawn, an arrhythmia hit hard enough to stop me. I gripped a fence post until the beat settled. Sarah had warned me not to walk more than a few hundred yards without assistance. I had six miles to the station.

I kept going anyway.

At the service shed, I found an old walking stick used by groundskeepers and took it. I left my gold Luna pin on the shelf in exchange. Let Knox decide which object had more value.

My coat vibrated with two incoming messages.

KNOX: Morning. Do not make this harder than it needs to be.

THEO: Are you still mad at me?

I stared at my son's name until rain blurred the screen. I wanted to answer. I wanted to tell him I loved him and that love did not erase consequence. But any message could reveal my route through the household tracking system.

I turned the phone off, removed the battery, and left both pieces beneath the shed roof.

At the edge of the pines, the mate bond tightened like wire around my ribs. Knox's presence pulsed behind me, warm and familiar and wrong.

I sank to one knee in the mud.

"Nyra is gone," I whispered to the bond. "So you don't get to use her to keep me here."

The tether resisted.

Pain shot through my sternum.

I thought of the banquet floor. Theo's hand on Knox's coat. Knox pushing the antidote into Bianca's vein.

I thought of the tribunal notice on my hospital bed.

"I, Evelyn Hart, reject Alpha Knox Blackwood as my mate."

The words shook.

The bond pulled tighter.

"You broke protection first. You broke trust first. I am ending what is left."

I forced every remaining thread of wolf magic toward the mark beneath my collarbone.

The connection snapped.

Agony threw me backward into the mud.

For several seconds, I could not breathe.

Then the pressure vanished.

No Alpha aura. No instinctive awareness of where Knox stood. No phantom pull toward the warm windows behind me.

Only rain.

Only my own heartbeat.

I pushed myself upright and entered the forest.

The Tribunal train station lay six miles south, but I never reached it.

Two miles beyond the Blackwood line, voices moved through the trees.

"Someone's coming," a man said.

Three rogues stepped onto the trail.

Their leader sniffed the air. "No wolf. But I smell rank."

I picked up a fist-sized stone.

"Move."

He laughed. "Or what?"

"Or you find out how much damage a dying woman can do before she dies."

The second rogue circled behind me.

My right leg trembled. I knew I could not outrun them.

The leader lunged.

A silver blade flashed from the darkness.

A tall man in a charcoal patrol jacket drove his shoulder into the rogue's ribs and pinned him to a tree. Two more Silver Moon patrol officers emerged behind him.

"Back across the neutral marker," the stranger ordered. "Now."

The rogues ran.

He turned to me.

A crescent-over-mountain crest gleamed on his chest.

Silver Moon.

"Name?" he asked.

"Evelyn."

"Evelyn what?"

I looked back once at the black forest hiding Knox's territory.

"Hart."

The patrol captain studied my face. "I'm Liam Reed. You have a Tribunal sanctuary code attached to your name."

Sarah had sent it.

My knees gave out.

Liam moved fast but stopped short of grabbing me.

"Can I catch you?"

The question struck harder than it should have.

"Yes."

His hands closed around my shoulders just before I hit the ground.

"Get a medical transport," he ordered his team.

As darkness pulled at my vision, I heard one of the officers say, "Blackwood patrol is moving toward the border."

Liam looked down at me.

"Then we cross now," he said. "Once she's on Silver Moon land, Knox Blackwood does not get to take her back."
