The Alpha's Faded Mate Mark Chapter 1

Everyone said I was the luckiest she-wolf in the pack.

At nineteen, I found my destined mate, Alpha Gabriel.

He fought through rogues to protect me and built our empire from the ground up.

He publicly declared that my word was law, punishing anyone who showed me disrespect.

Whenever I was tired, he carried me.

Whenever I was scared, his scent grounded me.

I gave him a beautiful daughter and prepared for our fifth-year permanent mate renewal.

I bought the ceremonial dress and lit the ritual candles in our bedroom.

But when the full moon peaked, he wasn't there.

He was comforting his childhood friend, Ava, who claimed she couldn't shift.

I called him at ten o'clock, begging him to come back.

He told me to stop being childish over a silly ceremony.

At midnight, the burning mark on my chest faded into nothingness.

I couldn't smell his comforting scent anymore.

When he returned at 2 AM and kissed my neck, he whispered he loved me.

I pushed him away and looked into his eyes.

"Get out of my room, Gabriel."

"Gabriel, it's ten o'clock." I gripped my phone and stared at the ritual candles burning low on the dresser.

A woman's broken sob came through the speaker. Then my husband's voice softened into the tone he once reserved for me.

"Easy, Ava. I'm right here. You're safe."

"Gabriel." I forced his name past the pressure in my throat. "You have two hours."

His exhale crackled over the line. "Not now, Claire. Ava's having another panic episode. Her wolf keeps trying to force a shift, and I'm not leaving her alone like this."

"Tonight is our fifth-year full moon." I pressed a palm to the ache behind my ribs. The mate bond had been pulsing wrong since sunset, tightening and loosening like a thread under too much strain. "The permanent renewal has to be completed before midnight. If both of us aren't at the altar when the moon reaches its peak, the bond closes."

"You mean it breaks," I added when he said nothing.

"I know what the ceremony says."

"Then come home."

Another rustle sounded in the background. Fabric. A muffled whimper. I pictured Ava twisting her fingers into the front of his shirt, and for once the image didn't make me furious. It only made me tired.

"You're asking me to walk away from a pack member in crisis because you want me to light a few candles," Gabriel said.

"I'm asking my mate to keep the vow he made five years ago."

"Don't turn this into a loyalty test."

"It is a loyalty test. That's the point of the renewal."

His voice hardened. "A true mate bond doesn't disappear because an old clock hits midnight. I'm the Alpha of Blackridge, Claire. I've spent my entire life learning our laws."

"Then you should remember the part that says rank doesn't overrule the moon."

Silence.

For one second, I thought I had reached him.

Then Ava cried his name.

Gabriel answered her before he answered me. "I'm here."

Something in my chest went strangely still.

"Gabriel, listen carefully. If you stay there, you are choosing what happens next. I won't call again."

"Stop being dramatic." Alpha command roughened the edges of his words, a pressure meant to end arguments before they began. "I won't abandon an orphan under my protection because my wife is jealous. I'll come home when she's stable."

The line went dead.

I lowered the phone.

The bedroom had been prepared exactly as the old rites required: white candles, silver bowl, two cups of ceremonial wine, the moonstone pendant Gabriel had given me when he first claimed me. I had spent a month checking every detail with the elders. He had known the date. He had watched me mark it on our calendar. That morning, I had reminded him before he left.

None of that had mattered.

At 11:47, I carried the untouched second cup to the sink and poured it out.

At 11:55, I blew out every candle except the two beside the window.

At 11:59, I sat on the edge of our bed and traced the raised crescent scar beneath my collarbone.

Five years earlier, Gabriel and I had been nineteen and terrified. He had inherited a failing pack, a leaking lodge, and a border full of rogues who expected a boy Alpha to collapse. During the first attack, we had fought back-to-back in freezing mud. Afterward, with blood on his mouth and rain in his hair, he had pressed his forehead to mine.

"I'll never make you wait for me, Claire," he'd whispered. "You come first. Always."

The grandfather clock downstairs began striking midnight.

The first chime hit.

Pain tore through my chest.

I folded in half so fast my shoulder struck the bedframe. My phone hit the floor. The second chime came as my knees slammed into the rug.

The bond ripped open.

There was no graceful fading, no sad little thread drifting away. It felt as if something with claws had reached between my ribs and dragged Gabriel out of me by force. Every place where his emotions had once brushed mine burned raw. I tried to breathe and couldn't.

My wolf howled once inside my mind.

Then she vanished into silence.

I don't know how long I stayed curled on the floor. When the clock finally stopped, the pain stopped with it.

The sudden emptiness was worse for three heartbeats.

Then I inhaled.

For the first time in years, nothing inside me leaned toward Gabriel.

No anxiety about his mood. No instinct to find him. No invisible pull demanding that I forgive before he apologized.

I dragged myself upright using the vanity. My hands shook as I pulled the neckline of my robe aside.

The crescent mark was fading.

Its dark edges turned charcoal, then gray. The center thinned to pale pink. I watched until the last trace dissolved beneath my skin.

Smooth flesh remained.

The mark was gone.

So was the bond.

At two in the morning, the bedroom door opened.

Gabriel came in carrying the cold with him. He shrugged off his wool coat and tossed it over a chair without looking at the dead candles or the untouched altar cloth.

"Is she asleep?" I asked.

"Finally." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I told you I'd come home. You didn't need to turn the phone call into a crisis."

He crossed to the bed as if the night had been inconvenient instead of irreversible.

"You didn't make it," I said.

"I know. We'll deal with the elders tomorrow."

"There is nothing to deal with."

He gave me the tired look he used when he thought I was being unreasonable. "Claire, not tonight."

Then he leaned toward my neck out of habit.

For five years, that gesture had sent heat through my body before his lips ever touched me. Tonight I smelled damp wool, stale coffee, and Ava's cloying jasmine perfume soaked into his shirt.

My stomach turned.

I jerked away.

Gabriel's mouth met empty air.

He stared at me. "What the hell was that?"

"Don't touch me."

"Are we still doing this?" His exhaustion sharpened into irritation. "I kept someone from hurting herself tonight. I'm sorry I missed your ceremony, but I'm not sorry I did my job."

"You never apologized."

"Fine. I'm sorry." He spread his hands. "There. We can perform the renewal next month."

"There is no next month."

"I'm the Alpha."

"The moon doesn't care."

His jaw flexed. "Stop talking like we're strangers. You're my mate."

"Am I?"

He stepped closer. "Enough."

His fingers reached for the place where his mark had been.

The instant his thumb touched bare skin, he stopped.

He rubbed the spot once, then again. Confusion replaced anger. He caught the edge of my robe and pulled it farther off my shoulder, exposing my collarbone to the white moonlight.

Gabriel went completely still.

His face lost color.

"Claire," he whispered.

I met his eyes while his fingers hovered over the unmarked skin.

For the first time that night, my husband finally understood that midnight had mattered.
