Chapter 3

Harper POV

"Tear his throat out," Caleb ordered.

Neither guard moved.

For one stunned second, the ballroom held its breath. Mason hung in Caleb's fist, his torn collar darkening where the Alpha's claws had broken skin. Around us, guests remained pressed against the walls beneath the crushing weight of Caleb's aura.

I stepped forward. "No."

Caleb looked at me.

The guards looked at me too.

I had hated the title Luna from the moment he forced it onto me, but the pack had heard the vows. They had watched him mark me. If the title was going to be my cage, I could still use its bars as a weapon.

"I said no," I repeated. "No execution without a tribunal. That is pack law."

A murmur moved through the room.

Caleb's eyes narrowed. "Do not challenge me in public."

"Then do not order murder in public."

Mason gave a rough, breathless laugh despite the claws at his throat. "There she is."

Caleb hurled him across the ballroom.

Mason crashed through the edge of a banquet table. Wood split. Silver serving dishes hit the floor, scattering fruit and broken crystal around his body.

"Mason!"

I tried to reach him. Caleb blocked me with one arm.

"Stay where you are."

Across the wreckage, Mason pushed himself upright. Blood ran from his mouth, but he refused to lower his head.

"You do not love her," he said.

Caleb's expression hardened. "Love has nothing to do with leadership."

"Exactly." Mason wiped his mouth. "This marriage is a transaction. You bound Harper to yourself because Chloe wanted me cleared of every excuse to refuse her."

Whispers sharpened around us.

Chloe, who had recovered from being shoved aside, went perfectly still near the dance floor. "You are delirious."

Mason turned toward the crowd. "Ask to see the agreement. Ask why the Luna is confined to the east wing. Ask why her grandmother's medical bills are tied to her obedience."

The room changed.

Not rebellion. Not yet. But uncertainty.

Caleb felt it too. His aura surged, forcing several guests to their knees.

"Enough."

"No," Mason said. "You wanted everyone to witness your ownership. Let them witness the price."

Caleb crossed the distance in three strides and struck him.

Mason hit the floor, rolled, and came back to one knee. His sleeve had torn from wrist to elbow. Under the fabric, pale lines crossed his forearm in a ladder of old scars.

I knew those marks.

Silver disciplinary wire.

Years ago, before Caleb became Alpha, commanders used it on soldiers who disobeyed orders during the border wars. Mason had once told me he received the punishment after refusing to abandon an injured patrol behind enemy lines. He had carried three men home anyway.

Caleb saw me looking.

His mouth flattened. "Do not romanticize disobedience. Those scars are proof that Mason has never understood command."

"They are proof I know the difference between command and cruelty," Mason said.

His gaze found mine.

"Harper, you do not have to stay here."

"She signed the contract," Caleb snapped.

"With a hospital bill held against her throat."

Chloe pushed through the watching guests, her crimson gown whispering over broken glass. "This is absurd. Mason has been obsessed with her for years. Of course he is inventing some conspiracy now that she belongs to someone else."

"I do not belong to him," I said.

Chloe smiled. "The mark says otherwise."

Mason took one step toward her. "Leave Harper out of your ambition. I told you before the council proposed this engagement, and I will tell you again now. I will never mate you."

The words landed in front of half the northern elite.

Chloe's face drained.

Caleb's jaw tightened so sharply I heard his teeth click.

Now I understood what this gala had really been meant to accomplish. Not celebration. Pressure. Caleb wanted Mason surrounded by elders, donors, officers, and allies when Chloe's engagement was announced. My presence as Caleb's marked Luna was supposed to remove Mason's last reason to resist.

Instead, Mason had humiliated both of them.

"You will marry where the council requires," Caleb said.

"Then the council can chain me to the altar."

"That can be arranged."

Mason looked at me again. "Tell them the truth. Tell them you never chose this."

My throat closed.

If I spoke, Caleb could freeze my grandmother's care before sunrise. If I stayed silent, Mason would keep fighting until Caleb killed him.

A guard approached Mason from behind. As he reached for Mason's arm, his cuff pulled back, revealing his own thin white scars from silver discipline.

He hesitated.

That hesitation mattered. It told me the room was not as obedient as Caleb believed. The officers around us had survived the same wars, buried the same friends, and learned what happened when loyalty became permission for cruelty.

Mason noticed. So did Caleb.

"Commander Mason is under arrest for insubordination and assault on his Alpha," Caleb said. "Take him to the confinement cells."

"That is not what you ordered a minute ago," I said.

Caleb's gaze cut to me. "Be grateful I changed my mind."

The guards moved in.

Mason fought them off long enough to step toward me. "Harper, listen to me. I can get you out tonight. I have people at the south gate."

"Stop," I whispered.

"You think her grandmother is safe because he pays a bill? He can take that away whenever he wants. This will never end until you leave."

He was right. That was the worst part.

Caleb seized Mason by the front of his shirt and lifted him again.

"You do not get another warning."

Mason's boots left the floor. "And you do not get to call yourself her mate while you use her family as a leash."

Gold swallowed Caleb's irises.

His claws slid out.

This time there was no hesitation in the room. Everyone knew what came next.

I saw the exact point where Caleb's claws would enter Mason's throat.

I moved before fear could stop me.

I stepped directly between them and pressed both hands against Caleb's chest.

"Caleb, stop!"
