Chapter 1

I stood completely frozen in the grand doorway of our pack house’s Alpha suite, my fingers gripping the heavy, carved oak frame so tightly that my knuckles turned completely white, the blood draining from them just as surely as it was draining from my heart. The sight before my eyes was not a new one—my fated mate, Alpha Kael, deeply entangled with another she-wolf—but the visceral, agonizing pain of it never hurt any less. The mate bond, that mystical tether that was supposed to bind our souls in perfect harmony, flared with a toxic, burning agony that threatened to drop me to my knees.

He saw me. I know for an absolute certainty that he did. His steel-gray eyes, the ones that had haunted my dreams since we were children, locked with mine over Selene’s bare, golden shoulder. Instead of pulling away, instead of showing even a single ounce of remorse or shame, his lips curved into that cruel, mocking smirk I had grown to dread over the last three agonizing years. The scent of their arousal, a sickening mixture of Kael’s sharp pine and Selene’s overwhelming jasmine, choked the air, suffocating my inner wolf who whimpered pitifully in the deepest recesses of my mind.

Instead of stopping, Kael pulled her flush against his muscular chest, his large hands tracing possessive, claiming patterns across her skin.

"Kael," Selene purred, her voice carrying deliberately across the expansive room, laced with a smug dominance. "Don't stop, my Alpha."

She turned her head, noticing me standing there with feigned, theatrical surprise before her crimson-painted lips spread into a triumphant, venomous smile. Her laugh echoed through the opulent suite—musical, mocking, and entirely meant for me to hear. It was a sound designed to establish her dominance as the pack’s chosen Luna in everything but name, reminding me of my place as the unwanted, rejected mistake.

I backed away silently, the heavy oak doors closing with a soft click, my chest tight with a familiar, suffocating ache. Three years of this absolute torment. Three years of calculated, relentless humiliation in front of the entire Blood Moon Pack. Three years of desperately hoping the boy I had once loved, the boy the Moon Goddess had chosen for me, would somehow remember what we had been before my mother's desperate, manipulative scheme had destroyed our lives and trapped him in a mating he despised.

In the small, drafty guest bedroom in the omega quarters—my bedroom now, far away from the Alpha wing—I curled onto the thin, scratchy sheets, hugging my knees tightly to my chest. The pack house was silent except for the occasional, distant burst of Selene's laughter floating down the corridors like poisoned wind chimes.

Suddenly, my pack-issued communication crystal chimed on the nightstand, glowing with the pale green light of the pack infirmary. My heart stuttered in my chest, a cold dread washing over me as I answered.

"Elara?" The voice of the pack healer was gentle, overly professional, and thick with unspoken sorrow. I already knew. The world around me seemed to stop spinning. "I am so very sorry to inform you..."

The words blurred together into a meaningless, roaring static in my ears after that. Leo was gone. My sweet, innocent little brother, the sole reason I had endured this living hell, had finally lost his long, agonizing battle with the shadow-sickness, a rare and incurable corruption of the wolf spirit. I had visited him just yesterday in the sterile infirmary wing, held his painfully thin hand, and promised to the Goddess that I would come back tomorrow with his favorite ancient histories of the first shifters.

There would be no tomorrow for Leo.

The crystal slipped from my trembling fingers, shattering on the wooden floor as a raw, animalistic sob tore forcefully from my throat. I collapsed onto the bed that felt more like a tomb, my body convulsing with silent, earth-shattering grief. My inner wolf howled, a sound of pure, unadulterated devastation that echoed only within the confines of my own broken mind. The sounds of Kael and Selene's pleasure had long since stopped, and the massive pack house settled into its typical midnight silence—expensive, hollow, and utterly indifferent to my immense suffering. Leo was the absolute last thread tethering my soul to this pack and this miserable existence. With him gone to the ancestors, what possible reason did I have to stay and endure this torture?

Three agonizing days after Leo's body was returned to the earth, I stood outside Kael's grand home office, the official pack severance scrolls clutched tightly in my trembling hand. The burial ritual had been yesterday—a small, quiet, profoundly lonely affair on the edge of the territory. Kael, the Alpha of this pack, had not attended. He had sent a single arrangement of white wolfsbane with a generic card signed by his Beta.

I knocked, two soft, hesitant taps against the dark mahogany door.

"Enter," came his cold, authoritative command, vibrating with the power of his Alpha tone.

I stepped inside, my heart hammering violently against my ribs like a trapped bird. Kael sat behind his massive, obsidian desk, his attention entirely fixed on a map of the territory spread before him. He didn't even bother to look up.

"I need to speak with you," I said, my voice remarkably steadier than I had expected given the absolute wreckage of my soul.

"Make it quick. I have a border patrol meeting with the warriors in twenty minutes."

I walked forward and placed the heavy parchment scrolls directly on his desk, right over his strategic maps. "I want a formal severance. I am rejecting the bond."

That finally got his attention. His steel eyes flicked up, narrowing dangerously as they assessed me, his Alpha aura flaring in the room, trying to submit me. For a fleeting fraction of a second, I caught a glimpse of something raw—genuine surprise, perhaps even a flash of panic—before his handsome features hardened back into a mask of cruel indifference.

"Your brother finally dies, so you are done playing the tragic, dutiful mate?" His words were deliberately designed to cut me to the bone, and they did, slicing through my remaining defenses.

"Leo has absolutely nothing to do with this decision," I lied smoothly, refusing to let him see the tears threatening to fall. "I cannot do this anymore, Kael. My wolf is dying. We both know this mating was never real, forced by my mother's trickery. I am setting you free."

He leaned back in his large leather chair, studying me with cold, predatory calculation. Then, without breaking eye contact, he reached for his communication crystal. "Selene? Come to my office immediately. Bring that bottle of aged elderberry wine we’ve been saving for a special occasion."

He cut the connection without waiting for her response, his eyes never leaving mine, practically glowing with challenge. "If you truly want a severance, Elara, we should celebrate my freedom properly, don't you think?"

Selene arrived mere minutes later, the dark, rich wine in hand, her revealing crimson dress clinging to every curve of her body. Her amber eyes lit up with malicious glee when she saw the official severance scrolls resting on the dark desk.

"Are those what I think they are, my Alpha?" she asked, barely containing her giddy excitement, her scent spiking with anticipation.

Kael pulled her roughly onto his lap, his large hand sliding possessively up her exposed thigh in a display meant entirely to break me. "The omega has finally decided to set me free from her pathetic presence."

Selene popped the cork on the vintage wine, the sound echoing sharply in the tense room. Kael took the dusty bottle, filling two crystal goblets—not three.

"To freedom, and to my true Luna," he toasted, his voice devoid of any warmth, clinking his heavy glass against Selene's.

They drank deeply, laughing together in perfect harmony, while I stood there, utterly invisible, drowning in my grief and my shattered bond. But as I watched them, something profound shifted inside of me. Something that had been bending, stretching, and tearing for three long years finally snapped completely. I turned on my heel and walked out, their cruel laughter following me down the grand hallway like a physical blow. But this time, I wasn't retreating to my dark room to cry in pathetic solitude. This time, my tears had crystallized into something much harder, something profoundly colder. This time, I was completely and utterly done.
