Chapter 2

I didn't sleep.

Not a single hour. I lay on my side of the bed with my eyes open, watching the ceiling go from black to gray to the pale, watery blue of early morning. Damon slept beside me with one arm thrown over his face, breathing slow and even. The sleep of a man who thinks he's solved something. Who filed a problem away and moved on.

I listened to him breathe and made a list.

Not in a notebook. Just in my head, quiet and methodical, the way I used to organize case files back when I still had a career to organize. Joint accounts—three of them, all with his name first. The deed to the Hale property, which had never included my name at all. The pack hospital contract I'd co-signed when Damon expanded the east wing. My mother's lockbox, still sitting in the back of my closet, the one thing in this house that was entirely mine.

By the time the sky was fully light, I had the whole shape of it.

Damon's alarm went off at seven. He silenced it in one motion, sat up, and looked at me the way he always did in the mornings—a quick, assessing glance, like checking that everything was still in its place.

"You're up early," he said.

"Couldn't sleep."

He nodded. Didn't ask why.

I watched him shower and dress and move through the room with the easy confidence of a man who had no idea his wife had spent the night cataloguing everything he could take from her. He knotted his tie in the mirror. Checked his phone. Then he crossed to my side of the bed and pressed his lips to my forehead—warm, unhurried, like nothing at all had happened.

"Tonight," he said, "let me take you somewhere. Make up for this week."

I looked up at him. "That sounds nice."

He smiled. It reached his eyes, which was the worst part. He meant it. He genuinely thought we were fine.

I listened to his car pull out of the drive. Then I got up, pulled on my coat, and took the envelope from behind the towels under the sink.

I drove twenty minutes outside pack territory to a branch of a human bank I'd never used before.

The lobby was quiet for a Tuesday morning. Fluorescent light, the smell of carpet cleaner, a young woman at the front desk who smiled and asked how she could help me. I told her I wanted to open a new account. Individual. No joint holders.

She walked me through the paperwork without any interest in my life, which was exactly what I needed.

When she slid the signature line across the desk, I picked up the pen and signed my name. Selene Archer. Not Selene Hale—I'd never legally changed it, though I'd stopped using Archer years ago the way you stop using a word you've forgotten the meaning of. My hand was steady. The letters came out clean.

I looked at my own signature for a moment.

This isn't shock, I thought. I'd been through shock last night, on the bathroom floor with my knees to my chest. This was the part that came after shock. The part that was quiet and clear and a little frightening in how calm it felt.

I deposited the money. Every bill.

Then I drove to Mara's.

Mara Voss had been my closest friend for nine years. She was a nurse at the pack hospital, practical and sharp and constitutionally incapable of pretending something was fine when it wasn't. Her apartment smelled like coffee and the eucalyptus candle she kept burning on her kitchen windowsill, and when she opened the door and saw my face, she didn't say anything at first. She just stepped back and let me in.

I sat on her couch. I set the envelope—empty now, just the casing of it—on her coffee table.

"Damon brought this home last night," I said. "Two hundred thousand dollars. He told me not to go after Camille. That whatever she'd taken from me, he'd pay double."

Mara was very still.

"He what." It wasn't a question. Her voice had gone flat in that particular way it did right before she got loud.

"He slid it across the kitchen counter. Didn't look up from his phone."

"He—" She stopped. Started again. "He *paid* you. To leave his mistress alone." She pressed both hands flat on her knees. "Selene. Selene, look at me."

I looked at her.

"This is worse than him cheating. Do you understand that? This isn't just—this isn't a mistake or a moment of weakness or whatever story men tell themselves. He came home with *cash*. He had it *ready*. He looked at you and saw a problem he could buy his way out of."

"I know," I said.

"He doesn't respect you. He doesn't even—he doesn't *see* you."

"I know that too." And I did. That was the thing that had crystallized somewhere between the bathroom floor and the bank parking lot. Not the betrayal itself, but the shape of it. He hadn't come home afraid of what I might do. He'd come home confident. Because after twelve years, he'd learned exactly how much I would absorb and exactly how little it would take to manage me.

He understood me even less than I'd thought.

Mara stood up. "I'm going to call him."

"No." I reached over and put my hand on her wrist. "Sit down."

"Selene—"

"If he knows I'm not processing, I lose every advantage I have." I kept my voice level. "Right now he thinks I took the money and I'm upset and I'll spend a few days being quiet and then we'll have a nice dinner and it'll be over. Let him think that. Let him think I'm the Luna he wants me to be."

Mara sat back down slowly. She looked at me the way people look at something they're not sure they recognize anymore.

"What are you going to do?"

The word had been sitting in my chest since last night. Small and solid, like a stone I'd been carrying without knowing it was there.

"Leave," I said.

The room was quiet except for the candle and the distant sound of traffic from the street below.

Mara exhaled. "Okay," she said softly. "Okay. Then we figure out how."

I got back to the Hale house just after six.

The smell hit me before I was fully through the door—garlic, butter, something simmering low on the stove. Warm and familiar, the smell of a Sunday I might have loved once. I stopped in the entryway, coat still on, keys still in my hand.

Damon was in the kitchen. He'd changed into a gray henley, sleeves pushed to the elbows, and he was standing at the stove with a dish towel slung over his shoulder. He looked up when he heard me and smiled—easy, genuine, the smile of a man who had cooked his wife's favorite meal and expected to be forgiven.

"I made your favorite," he said. "We good?"

I stood there and looked at him.

Twelve years of mornings. Twelve years of that jaw, that voice, that particular way he filled a room. I searched for something—some flicker of the feeling that used to live in my chest when I looked at him. I found nothing. Just a man in someone else's kitchen, making someone else's dinner, smiling at a woman he thought he knew.

"We're good," I said.

I crossed the kitchen and walked into his arms. He pulled me close, one hand at my back, his chin dropping to the top of my head. He smelled like cedar and garlic and underneath it, faint and fading, the ghost of her perfume.

I pressed my face against his shoulder.

My eyes stayed open.
