Chapter 1

After seven years as the Luna of the Moonstone Pack, mated to Alpha Julius Kane, I had grown used to the cold distance between us. His touch was fleeting, his words detached, and his gestures of affection existed only when the pack was watching. Yet, on my birthday, he surprised me—something he’d never done before.

A courier arrived at the pack house with a meticulously arranged basket. It was filled with luxurious menstrual care products: herbal teas, soothing salves, scented candles, and heat packs wrapped in soft, embroidered covers. Nestled among them was a handwritten note that read:

"For those harder days. Take care of yourself."

There was no name written at the end—just the vague implication of thoughtfulness. My heart stirred for a fleeting moment. It wasn’t enchanted roses or a silk gown, but it felt intimate in a way I hadn’t expected.

I allowed myself to hope. Foolishly.

It wasn’t until later that evening, scrolling through the pack’s social feed, that I saw Amaya Spooner's post. She was holding a nearly identical basket in her arms, the caption glowing with gratitude:

"Some Alphas know how to take care of their women. Feeling so loved today."

My hands clenched the note tightly. It wasn’t for me. It had never been for me.

Again Amaya, a rogue I’d once saved, left her poisonous comment on my post:

[Some people only pick up the scraps I’ve discarded.]

Confusion turned to horror when I learned he had purchased a secluded cottage for her within our territory—something no rogue had ever been granted.

The gifts meant to strengthen our bond were actually hers. I stormed to the cottage, the air heavy with the scent of betrayal, and caught them mid-dinner, sharing laughter over wine and roasted venison.

"Isolde Everett, stop making a scene," Julius snarled when I entered, the candles flickering in my wake. His tone was laced with irritation, not guilt. "Amaya and I are discussing pack strategies. If there were anything more, would you still hold the title of Luna?"

In the past, I might have clung to his every word, demanding explanations. But now, I simply smiled, icy and composed, as I tossed the care basket onto their table, the stuff inside scattering on the floor. "Keep them. You seem to need the bond more than I do." I reached up, unclasped the necklace holding his mate mark charm—a sign of our union—and let it fall to the floor with a cold clink. "I wish you both happiness."

His jaw tightened as the charm rolled to his feet. The power it represented was not easily discarded. Julius stepped on it, crushing not just the silver pendant but the love I had fought to keep alive.

"You’re delusional," he spat. "Go back to the pack house and reflect on why you’ve never been worthy of the title of Luna. Maybe then, you’ll see why I had to—"

I didn’t let him finish. I turned and walked out into the forest, letting the cool night air soothe the storm raging inside me. I posted a final message in the pack chat:

[Tired.]

The backlash was immediate. Julius’s response appeared almost instantly, his manipulation seamless:

[Just training with a rogue ally. Isolde’s jealousy is exhausting. She can’t stand the sight of me helping others.]

Pack members flooded the chat with comments, some condemning me, others questioning Julius’s leadership. My mother was among the loudest voices, shaming me for throwing away a position so coveted. “If you ruin this, Isolde, you ruin our bloodline!”

But I refused to be shamed into silence. The Julius who had once charmed me with promises of love and partnership was gone, replaced by someone I barely recognized.

Later that night, Julius returned to the pack house with a half-wilted bouquet of roses. I was lounging on the den's oversized couch, staring blankly at the flames crackling in the hearth.

"You’re being ridiculous," he growled, tossing the roses onto the coffee table. "I got you a care package. Stop sulking and cook dinner. Isn’t that what you’re good for?"

I glanced at the bouquet, still faintly glowing with their enchantment. My lips curled into a bitter smile.

"You know," I said, kicking the bouquet off the table, "I’ve always envied the mates who walk through the forest with fresh flowers in their arms. It’s strange—you can gift Amaya a house and a magic-laced garden, but your Luna isn’t even worth a single real rose."

His eyes darkened. "Don’t be ungrateful. Do you think a mate who sulks and doubts her Alpha deserves anything? I’ve tolerated your insecurities long enough. Amaya—"

I cut him off, rising to meet his gaze. "Amaya what? Has she taught you to lead with dignity? Or are you simply drawn to the rogues who offer you what I refuse to be? A silent, submissive tool." My voice lowered, laced with venom. "I don’t like dirty second-hand goods, Julius. I don’t like dirty second-hand Alphas even more."

His fury flickered for just a moment, replaced by something I could only describe as unease. But before he could regain control, I turned and walked away, leaving him and his roses behind.
