Chapter 2

"The abdominal trauma was too severe," Dr. Harris said in the private hospital corridor. "We could not save the pregnancy."

Chase went completely still.

Then he drove his fist into the reinforced observation window.

The glass cracked in a white spiderweb around his knuckles. A low, animal sound tore from his chest, raw enough to silence the nurses at the far end of the hall.

I stood three feet away, holding my handbag so tightly the leather edge cut into my palm.

"She caused the fall herself," I said. "You need to hear that before you decide what happens next."

His head snapped toward me.

"Do not say another word."

"Lily was shredding financial evidence. The audit was going to expose her transfers. She needed a crisis big enough to stop anyone from looking at the accounts."

"My brother's child is dead."

"And the woman you are protecting may have killed it to save herself."

Chase crossed the distance between us. The air changed around him, heavy with Alpha pressure.

"You are talking about my brother's widow."

"I am talking about a thief."

The doors to the VIP suite slid open.

"Chase?"

Lily's weak voice transformed him instantly. He left me in the corridor and went to her bedside.

I followed.

She looked carefully broken. An IV ran into the back of her hand. Dark shadows sat beneath her eyes. She clutched the blanket high against her chest and turned her face away from me as if the sight of me frightened her.

"I knew she hated me," Lily whispered. "I knew she wanted the office back. I never thought she would hurt the baby."

"Stop performing," I said. "Tell him about the offshore transfers. Tell him why you were destroying the ledgers."

She flinched. "I don't care about money."

"Then you will not mind an independent audit."

For one second, panic flashed across her face.

Chase missed it.

"Enough," he said.

Lily reached for the phone on her bedside table. "I recorded her yesterday. I did not want to use it, but... I think you need to hear what she really thinks."

I folded my arms. "Play the whole thing."

Her thumb moved over the screen.

Static cracked through the speaker. Then my own voice filled the room.

"Sometimes I really wish that child didn't exist at all."

The recording stopped.

Silence followed.

My stomach turned cold.

I remembered the conversation. We had been arguing over her use of family accounts. The complete sentence had been: Sometimes I wish that child didn't exist at all, because then you could not keep using an innocent baby as an excuse to rob this company blind.

"That is edited," I said. "Check the file metadata. She cut the sentence in half."

Chase did not reach for the phone.

He reached for me.

His hand closed around my throat and slammed me against the wall beside the bed. Pain burst between my shoulder blades.

"Chase." I clawed at his wrist. "Think."

"You murdered my brother's heir."

"She edited the recording."

"You hated that child."

"I hated what she was doing with it."

His fingers tightened until every breath became a thin scrape.

Lily sat straighter in bed. The grief in her face had disappeared, replaced by watchful satisfaction.

Chase raised his other wrist and activated his encrypted terminal.

"Evelyn Thorne," he said. "Freeze all personal and corporate accounts under my authority. Revoke executive permissions. Remove biometric access to syndicate offices, residences, vehicles, and vaults. Effective immediately."

A synthetic voice answered. "Authorization confirmed."

Years of work vanished in seconds.

He had met me when his company was drowning in debt and hostile litigation. I had rebuilt the acquisition division, negotiated the northern shipping pact, and brought three rival families to the same table without firing a shot. None of it mattered beside a clipped audio file he had not bothered to examine.

"You have nothing now," Chase said. "No title. No money. No protection."

My lungs burned.

"And you think that makes you right?"

"I am going to make you pay for every second she suffers."

A laugh escaped me. It was ugly and breathless, but it was real.

His grip loosened in surprise.

"You think this is funny?"

"I think the most feared Alpha in the eastern territory is being manipulated by a woman who cannot even forge clean evidence."

"Keep talking."

"You already stripped me of everything you can reach. So either kill me now or start using your head."

His expression hardened.

I stopped fighting his hold and slid my right hand into my skirt pocket.

Lily noticed.

"Chase, get her out," she said quickly. "She is unstable."

I ignored her and pulled out the object I had taken from the executive suite before the ambulance arrived.

A micro backup drive rested between my fingers, its green status light pulsing.

"The shredder server creates an encrypted mirror every time a restricted ledger is scanned for destruction," I said. "This contains the index, timestamps, and transfer references she tried to erase."

Lily went pale.

Chase looked at the drive at last.

For one second, I thought reason had reached him.

Then his shoe came down on my hand.

The casing cracked beneath his heel.

He ground it once against the hospital floor until the green light went dark.

"I am done listening to you," he said.

I stared at the broken plastic.

He had not destroyed the only copy. The shredder index had already synchronized to a dormant server registered under one of my old acquisition subsidiaries, a safeguard I had designed years ago after a ransomware attack. Chase did not know the server still existed because he had never cared how the recovery system worked. Lily clearly did not know either.

I could have told him. I could have given him the location and forced the truth into his hands. Instead, I watched him grind the broken drive into the tile and understood what evidence meant to a man determined not to see it.

He had just destroyed the last reason I had to warn him.
