Chapter 2

Three days after I woke up in a sterile recovery room, I stood inside my own hallway.

My fingers gripped the cold brass handle of the master bedroom door. A sharp ache flared behind my abdominal incision, radiating through the thick gauze taped to my stomach. I pushed the door open and stepped into the room I had shared with Ethan for sixteen years.

I knelt on the hardwood floor and dragged the heavy steel safe from beneath the king-sized bed. The metal scraped harshly against the wood.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed my attorney, Arthur Thorne. I put him on speaker and set the device on the floor.

"Evelyn," Arthur answered on the second ring. "You sound completely out of breath. Did the hospital discharge you already?"

"I checked myself out," I said, punching the four-digit code into the keypad. "Do you have the documents ready?"

"I drafted the transfer exactly as you asked. But I have to warn you, revoking a living trust is aggressive. Are you entirely certain about this?"

The steel door popped open. I reached inside and pulled out a thick manila envelope. Inside sat the property deed for this house. Two million dollars of prime real estate, fully paid off.

"Leo is sixteen," I told Arthur, flipping to the signature page. "He doesn't need a two-million-dollar asset."

"You set up that trust for his future," Arthur argued. "It was meant to guarantee his college tuition and his first property. If you strip his name from the deed now, Ethan will receive the legal notices."

"Ethan can notice whatever he wants. I paid for the mortar and the bricks. I am taking it back."

"A judge will question the timing," Arthur warned, his tone shifting to professional concern. "You just had major surgery. They might argue you aren't in the right state of mind to make massive financial decisions."

"I have never been thinking more clearly," I shot back. "Let them question it. My son told me to take an aspirin while I was bleeding out on an operating table. He complained that my medical emergency was ruining a piano recital."

Arthur fell silent for a long moment. "I understand. I'll file the paperwork by noon. What about the other matter? The dissolution of marriage?"

"I have the divorce agreements printed."

"Serve them formally, Evelyn. Don't leave them lying around. You want a clear paper trail."

"I'm leaving them on his pillow. Goodbye, Arthur."

I ended the call. I grabbed a pen from the nightstand and signed the lawyer's letter revoking the trust. The scratch of the pen felt loud in the empty room. I pressed the tip down hard, ensuring the ink bled through to the copy beneath it. With one signature, I completely severed Leo's claim to the property.

I stood up, pressing a hand against my bandaged stomach, and walked over to Ethan's dresser.

A silver-framed photograph sat next to his expensive cologne. I picked it up.

It wasn't a picture of our family. It was Leo and Sue. Sue had her arms wrapped tightly around my son's shoulders, her cheek pressed against his temple. Leo sported a massive, genuine grin. The kind of smile he hadn't given me in five years.

Across the bottom of the frame, Leo had used a silver marker to write a message. Happy Birthday, Aunt Sue! The best listener ever.

Aunt Sue. He called her name sweeter than he ever called mine.

A strange, dry laugh escaped my throat. Not a sob. Just a hollow chuckle that pulled painfully at my stitches.

"The best listener," I whispered to the glass.

I didn't smash the frame. I didn't throw it against the wall. I simply laid it face down on the polished wood.

My phone buzzed against the mattress. Ethan's name flashed across the screen.

I tapped the green accept button and lifted the phone to my ear.

"Where the hell are you?" Ethan barked through the speaker. "The hospital said you checked out against medical advice."

"I am at the house packing my things."

"Packing? Are you throwing another tantrum? Leo said you were acting crazy at the clinic four days ago. You completely ruined Chloe's celebration dinner. She won first place, and you couldn't even send a text to congratulate her."

"I had a tumor removed from my abdomen, Ethan."

"Stop exaggerating. It was a minor procedure. Sue had the exact same thing done last year, and she was back at the gym in two days. You just want attention."

"Sue had a surface cyst. I had a partial organ resection. I signed my own surgical consent form because my husband was busy paying for another woman's child to go to summer camp."

Ethan sighed loudly, a harsh sound of pure irritation. "Are we really doing this right now? I don't have time for your medical drama. The country club is hosting a charity gala tonight. Sue needs me to introduce her to the board members so Chloe can get a scholarship recommendation. Make sure my navy suit is pressed by the time I get home."

"Press it yourself."

"Excuse me?"

"I am not your maid. I am not your ATM. And I am no longer your wife."

"You are acting completely unhinged. If you walk out that door, don't bother coming back."

"I own the door, Ethan. I own the house. You are the one who will be leaving."

I pulled the phone away from my ear and tapped the red button.

I reached into my tote bag and pulled out the two sets of printed divorce agreements. The pages felt crisp and heavy. I walked to Ethan's side of the mattress and placed the stack squarely in the center of his pillow.

My left hand felt heavy. I stared down at the three-carat diamond ring resting on my finger.

Sixteen years ago, I bought this ring myself. Ethan's credit cards were maxed out, so I paid the jeweler in cash and let him pretend he surprised me.

I gripped the diamond and twisted. The metal scraped over my knuckle, leaving a faint red mark behind.

I dropped the ring directly onto the signature line of the divorce papers.

I walked over to the closet. I didn't touch the rows of designer dresses Ethan bought me for corporate galas. I ignored the expensive jewelry boxes stacked on the shelves.

I grabbed my single black suitcase from the corner of the room. It contained three changes of comfortable clothes, my passport, and my laptop. Nothing else.

I rolled the suitcase out of the bedroom and down the hallway. The plastic wheels rumbled loudly against the oak floorboards. Every step sent a fresh wave of pain through my healing incision, but I kept my spine completely straight.

I reached the entryway. The massive foyer was dead quiet.

I pulled the heavy brass house key off my keychain.

Through the thick oak front door, the low rumble of a car engine suddenly cut through the silence. The engine sputtered and died right in the driveway.

I tossed the brass key onto the marble shoe cabinet.

It hit the stone surface with a sharp clack.

Before the sound could fade, the heavy deadbolt on the front door suddenly turned from the outside.
