Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse Chapter 1

In October 2025, an explosion occurs at a remote lab. An unidentified substance is leaked, and the virus makes people go insane. Anyone who is bitten by these rabid creatures becomes one of them.

It's like the zombies people see in movies and video games.

On the first day of the explosion, my five-year-old, Joyce Fairfield, is still at kindergarten. I risk my life to hurry there, but I can't even find her corpse when I arrive. I can only look at the surveillance footage to see her face, which is ashen with fear. I also see her mouth, "Mommy!"

15 days after the explosion, I finally traverse the city and get to my mother's home. However, all that welcomes me is a destroyed apartment and blood everywhere.

20 days after the explosion, my husband, Emmett Fairfield, calls me one last time from his office, which zombies have surrounded. He tells me not to leave the house.

Less than a month after the apocalypse arrives, I lose all my family. I'm alone as I struggle to survive in this dead world.

The spread of the virus triggers chaos in mankind. I exchange all my supplies to save a neighboring couple from bandits, leading them to safety in a secure zone where they can live stable lives. However, my kindness is not repaid.

Three years after the explosion, the secure zone is under siege by a wave of zombies. As we retreat, my neighbors shove me underneath a car so I'll distract the zombies. Then, they make a run for it and get away.

Trusted neighbors betray me. As the zombies eat away at me, I can feel death looming. All I want is to see my family again.

Now, I've been reborn. I have six hours before the zombie apocalypse breaks out.

Thanks to an explosion that had occurred in a research lab, an unknown substance was leaked to the world. This was the start of the apocalyptic era, where humans could get infected by the substance, thus transforming into zombies.

Three years after the zombie apocalypse started, I died in the maws of the zombies. To make things worse, my kindness was the reason behind my eventual death.

Surprisingly enough, I was reborn to the timeframe where there were six hours left before the zombie outbreak began.

Memories of my past life were replayed in my mind like a movie reel. It was as if I could still smell the rotten and bloodied stench wafting from the zombies. With a trembling hand, I felt my neck. Although it felt smooth and flawless, I could still feel phantom pain flaring from it.

The moment my phone's screen lit up, I turned my attention to it immediately. It was currently October 2nd, 2025, also known as the day the zombie virus was leaked.

It was then I could finally confirm the fact that I was reborn. I could still salvage the situation.

The first thing I did was call my daughter, Joyce Fairfield's kindergarten teacher right away. "Ms. Preston, please pack up Joyce's belongings for her. I'm picking her up soon."

"Did something bad happen, Mrs. Fairfield?" Anna Preston asked in confusion.

"It's personal, Ms. Preston. I'd like to request a day off for Joyce," I responded to Anna half-heartedly.

I needed to take Joyce home first before anything else.

During the zombie outbreak in my past life, I had rushed to the kindergarten as fast as I could, only to be greeted with Joyce's remains. When I played back the security footage, I saw Joyce screaming for me while she was being torn apart by the zombies. Since then, I was overcome with remorse for losing Joyce.

Now that I was given a second chance in life, I needed to bring Joyce home right away in order to ensure her survival.

There were only six hours left before the virus was leaked.

On the way to Joyce's kindergarten, I called my mother, Molly Beckett, who was the only one at home.

"Mom, I need you to head over to the supermarket and buy a huge amount of bread, potatoes, and steak. Grab as much food as you can. After that, I need you to deliver everything to my and Emmett's villa and wait for me there, alright?"

"Are you and Emmett throwing a party at your place?" Mom asked me in puzzlement.

"Precisely, Mom. Emmett got promoted last week, so I'd like to throw him a celebratory party. Can you please keep this a secret for now?"

Left without a choice, I could only use my husband, Emmett Fairfield's promotion as an excuse to fend Mom off.

"That's wonderful news! Don't worry, Amelia. Your secret is safe with me."

After ending the call with Mom, I called Emmett right away.

Since he just got a promotion last week, now was the busiest time of his career. In my previous life, Emmett's phone call to me marked the last time we ever spoke to each other after the zombie outbreak. He had told me to watch out for myself at home and that I shouldn't believe others so easily during the apocalypse.

Emmett, my own husband, was still worrying about my safety even during his final moments when he was being attacked by zombies. Yet, I ended up dying as a result of my overflowing kindness instead of following his advice.

"Emmett, I want you to take the afternoon off and buy more guns and ammo, as well as other self-defense equipment. Once you're done, you are to go home right away."

Emmett was silent for a moment. Finally, he asked me in a puzzled voice, "Did something happen?"

"I'll fill you in on the details once you're home! Just do as I say! You have to believe me!"

There were only six hours left. I didn't have time to explain everything over the phone.

In the end, Emmett chose to believe me. "Alright. I'll buy them right now."

After the zombie apocalypse descended on the world in my previous life, guns were hailed as the most important weapons when it came to fighting off the zombies. As a result, survivors often fought over them desperately throughout the apocalypse.

Zombies couldn't feel pain at all, so normal attacks did nothing to halt them in their steps. Only by putting a bullet in their head could they be completely annihilated.

If the food we stocked up on in the next six hours before the outbreak wasn't enough to last us till the military was here to rescue us, we'd have to leave our home in search of food. During that time, we'd definitely need guns on us.
