Chapter 1

The sterile hospital corridor stretched endlessly before me, fluorescent lights casting harsh shadows that seemed to mirror the anxiety clawing at my chest. I pressed my palms against the cool wall, trying to steady myself as I paced the same ten-foot stretch for what felt like the hundredth time. Through the small window of Operating Room 3, I could see glimpses of blue scrubs moving with urgent precision around my brother's still form.

Three hours. The surgery was supposed to take two hours, maximum. Oliver had assured me that morning, his confident smile never wavering as he explained the procedure. "It's routine, Leah. David will be fine. Carmen's been preparing for weeks—she's one of our most promising residents."

But Carmen looked so young when I'd seen her earlier, barely older than David himself. Her hands had trembled slightly when she'd introduced herself, though she'd covered it quickly with that bright, practiced smile. Something about her had made my stomach twist with unease, but I'd pushed the feeling aside. Oliver wouldn't let anything happen to David. He loved my brother almost as much as I did.

The operating room doors burst open with a violence that made my heart stop. Carmen stumbled out first, her surgical mask hanging loose around her neck, tears streaming down her pale face. Behind her, Oliver emerged with grim determination etched into every line of his features, but his eyes weren't on me—they were on Carmen, his hand reaching protectively for her shoulder.

"What happened?" The words tore from my throat, raw and desperate. "Where's David?"

Oliver's jaw tightened, and for a moment, he looked like a stranger. "Leah, we need to talk. There were... complications."

"Complications?" The word felt foreign on my tongue. "What kind of complications? Is he—"

"I'm so sorry," Carmen whispered, her voice breaking. "I tried everything, I swear I tried—"

"No." The denial came swift and fierce. "No, you don't get to apologize. Tell me what happened. Tell me David's okay."

Oliver stepped between us, his movements calculated and clinical. From his coat pocket, he produced a manila folder, thick with papers. "Leah, I know this is difficult, but we need to discuss the settlement agreement. It's standard procedure in cases like this—"

"Settlement?" The word hit me like a physical blow. "Oliver, where is my brother?"

His silence was answer enough. The folder slipped from his hands as my knees buckled, the papers scattering across the polished floor like fallen leaves. Carmen's sobs echoed in the background, but they sounded distant, muffled, as if I were drowning.

"Mrs. Black?" A nurse appeared beside me, her voice gentle but urgent. "Your mother is here. She's asking about—"

Mom. Oh God, Mom. I turned toward the elevator bank where she stood, her face bright with the hopeful smile she'd worn all morning. She'd insisted on coming despite her weak heart, claiming she needed to be here when David woke up. Her eyes found mine across the corridor, and I watched in horror as understanding dawned.

"Leah?" Her voice was small, fragile. "Sweetheart, what's wrong? Where's David?"

I couldn't speak. Couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. Behind me, I heard Oliver's voice, professional and detached: "Mrs. Thompson, I'm afraid there were complications during surgery. We did everything we could, but—"

"No." Mom's denial was fierce, protective. "No, you said she was qualified. You promised me—" Her gaze shifted to Carmen, who was still crying behind Oliver like a child seeking shelter. "She's just a resident. She's just a baby herself. Why did you let her—"

The words died in her throat. Mom's hand flew to her chest, her face contorting in pain. I lunged toward her, but she was already falling, her body crumpling like paper.

"Code blue! Code blue!" The announcement echoed through the corridor as medical staff swarmed around my mother's motionless form. I knelt beside her, my hands shaking as I touched her face.

"Mom, please. Please don't leave me too."

But even as they worked over her, I could see it in the doctors' eyes. The same look Oliver had worn when he'd emerged from David's surgery. The look that said it was already too late.

Through my tears, I saw Oliver pulling Carmen away from the chaos, his arm around her shoulders as he whispered something in her ear. They disappeared around the corner together, leaving me alone on the cold hospital floor with the two people I loved most in the world—both gone in the span of an hour, both victims of the same inexperienced hands that my husband had trusted with their lives.
