Chapter 5

POV: Emma Carter

The Grand Plaza ballroom glittered with chandeliers, champagne, and people who had never once wondered who stayed late to build the numbers they applauded.

I arrived alone.

My silver gown had cost more than I should have spent, but I wanted one night where I did not look tired, cornered, or invisible. The silk crossed at my back with narrow ribbons and fell cleanly to the floor.

Adrian stood near the stage with board members.

When he saw me, he stopped listening to the CFO.

His gaze moved over the dress, then back to my face.

For the first time in years, he looked openly stunned.

He took one step toward me.

Vanessa noticed.

Her expression changed so fast I almost missed it.

She had spent months hovering beside Adrian at meetings, dinners, and client events. I had told myself her interest was professional because the alternative made my marriage feel even uglier.

Tonight, there was no mistaking it.

She wanted him.

And she hated that he was looking at me.

Vanessa drained her champagne and crossed the room.

"Look at you," she said.

The smell of gin reached me before the rest of her words.

"You're drunk."

"I'm celebrating."

"Then celebrate somewhere else."

She laughed loudly.

Nearby conversations began to quiet.

"You think a dress changes what you are?"

"Vanessa, stop."

"Why? Worried the investors will hear what happened in Denver?"

My whole body went still.

She turned toward the people nearest us.

"Emma nearly blew a fifty-million-dollar deal because she couldn't keep things professional with Martin Russo."

A reporter by the bar looked over.

"That's a lie," I said.

"Is it? You ran out of the hotel and left the contract on the floor."

"Because he attacked me."

The word changed the air.

Vanessa's smile flickered, but she recovered quickly.

"Please. You panicked when a client flirted with you. Now you're rewriting it because you didn't get promoted."

"HR knew about his complaints before you sent me."

Her face tightened.

"Careful."

"I have the footage."

That hit her.

For one second, real fear replaced the alcohol-fueled arrogance in her eyes.

Then she looked past me toward Adrian.

He had moved closer, but he was still ten yards away.

Still watching.

Still calculating.

Vanessa stepped into my space.

"You manipulative little liar."

"Back up."

She grabbed the front of my gown.

I caught her wrist.

"Let go."

She yanked.

I stumbled on the edge of the carpet. Vanessa twisted the silk and shoved me at the same time.

The ribbons at my back snapped.

The top of the dress loosened instantly.

Cold air hit my skin.

I grabbed the fabric against my chest before it fell farther.

A camera flashed.

Then another.

The room exploded into noise.

I bent forward, one arm across my chest, the other holding the broken gown in place. Photographers raised their cameras. A few people turned away. More stared.

"Vanessa!" Adrian shouted. "Enough."

I looked at him.

He did not come to me.

His face had gone pale. His attention moved from the cameras to the board members to the reporters.

He was thinking about the company.

Again.

"Adrian," I said.

I did not say husband.

I did not have to.

He knew what I was asking.

Cross the room.

Take off your jacket.

Stand beside me.

Let them wonder why.

He stayed where he was.

Something inside me went quiet.

Not broken. Quiet.

Done.

The crowd shifted.

Ethan Cole came through it without hesitation.

He took off his jacket as he walked.

He stepped directly in front of me, blocking the cameras with his body.

"May I?" he asked.

Even now, he asked.

I nodded.

Ethan turned his head toward the photographers.

"Lower the cameras," he said.

He did not shout, but event security finally moved. Two guards stepped between us and the press line while the gala director ordered the photographers away from the floor. A woman from the hotel staff hurried over with a wrap and offered to take me to a private room.

"Her choice," Ethan said.

I appreciated that he did not decide for me even while everyone else was treating my body like public property.

"I want to leave," I told the staff member.

She nodded and cleared a path toward the doors.

He wrapped the jacket around my shoulders and pulled the lapels closed enough to cover me.

"Do you want to leave?"

I looked past him.

Adrian had finally taken a step forward.

Too late.

Vanessa stood frozen beside a broken champagne flute. The photographers were still shooting. The board was staring. Every secret Adrian had spent three years protecting was balanced on the next decision I made.

I tightened Ethan's jacket around me.

"Yes."

Ethan held out his hand.

I took it.

A murmur went through the ballroom.

Adrian's face changed.

"Emma."

I stopped.

He looked at our joined hands as if he could not understand what he was seeing.

"Don't leave like this," he said.

I almost smiled.

For three years, every time I had asked him to stand beside me, he had told me not to make things difficult.

Now he wanted me to protect him from the sight of another man doing what he had refused to do.

"You had three years not to let it get this far."

Vanessa found her voice.

"Adrian, she's doing this to humiliate you."

I turned to her.

"No. You did that yourself."

Then I faced Adrian one last time.

"And so did you."

Ethan guided me toward the doors.

He did not hide our joined hands from the cameras. He did not rush me. He did not ask me to explain my marriage or defend my choices.

At the threshold, I heard Adrian call my name again.

I kept walking.

Outside, the night air cut across my bare legs. Ethan's town car waited at the curb.

He opened the door, then paused.

"Where do you want to go?"

I thought of the resignation letter in my desk. The ring I had left off since our anniversary. The penthouse full of things I no longer wanted.

"Home," I said.

Not because I planned to stay.

Because I was going back to end it.
