Chapter 2

POV: Emma Carter

At 7:56 the next morning, I stood outside Northstar's main boardroom holding three leather binders and trying not to sway from exhaustion.

I had slept less than four hours.

I was still proud of the work.

The European models were clean, documented, and defensible. This was the first time my analysis had been placed on the agenda for a core executive meeting. I had rehearsed the opening twice in the elevator.

Then Vanessa stepped into my path.

"Emma."

She held an empty coffee cup between two fingers.

"Oat milk latte. Lobby cafe."

I looked at the cup, then at the boardroom doors.

"The meeting starts in four minutes. I need to set up the models."

"I have the presentation."

She took the top binder out of my arms.

"Those are my notes."

"They are Northstar's notes." Her voice rose just enough to attract attention. "Junior analysts support meetings. They do not run them. Right now, you can support me by getting coffee."

A director passing behind us slowed down.

Heat climbed my neck.

"Vanessa, the assumptions on the German market need context. If someone asks about the tariff exposure—"

"I'll manage." She pushed the cup against the remaining binders. "Unless coffee is beyond your capabilities too."

I looked through the open doors.

Adrian stood at the head of the table speaking with the CFO.

He glanced toward the hallway.

Our eyes met.

He saw the cup. He saw Vanessa blocking me. He saw the people watching.

For half a second, something tightened in his face.

Then he turned back to the CFO.

He did not say my name.

He did not ask why the analyst who had built the models was being sent downstairs.

He erased me with one polite nod.

"Is there a problem?" Vanessa asked.

I took the cup.

"No."

The cafe line was long. By the time I returned, the meeting had been underway for seventeen minutes.

I slipped into the back of the boardroom.

My first slide covered the screen.

Vanessa stood beside it with a laser pointer.

"My team spent the last forty-eight hours rebuilding the regional assumptions," she said. "I personally reviewed the cleaned data before this morning's briefing."

My stomach turned.

She clicked to the next slide.

My custom model. My formulas. My footnotes.

She had changed the author line from Emma Carter to Operations Strategy Team.

"We expect the strongest first-quarter improvement in Germany," she continued. "The risk is manageable if we hedge currency exposure early."

That line came directly from my notes.

Adrian leaned forward.

"Excellent work, Vanessa. This is the level of preparation we need."

My fingers crushed the coffee cup.

Vanessa accepted his praise with a smile.

No one asked who had built the model.

No one looked at the analyst standing in the back with bloodshot eyes.

Before anyone left, one of the directors paused beside me at the back of the room.

"Those sensitivity tables were yours, weren't they?" he asked quietly.

I glanced toward Vanessa. She was accepting congratulations near the screen.

"I built them."

He frowned. "I thought so. I saw your initials in the early draft last week. Good work."

It was a small comment. Barely ten seconds. But it mattered because it proved I was not imagining the erasure. Someone else had seen my name before Vanessa removed it.

I waited until the room emptied, then photographed the presentation title slide and the version number displayed in the lower corner. I emailed the image to my personal attorney archive with a note stating the date, time, and what had happened. If Adrian wanted me to treat this like ordinary office politics, I would treat it like any other professional dispute: document first, argue later.

After the meeting, I waited until Adrian left the room, then followed him into the executive pantry.

He poured water from the filtered tap without turning around.

"You shouldn't follow me in here."

"Vanessa stole my work."

His shoulders stiffened.

"She presented the department's work."

"She presented my work. I stayed here until after one. She sent me for coffee so she could claim it. You knew that."

"Keep your voice down."

"Why? Someone might think you know me?"

He turned then.

"Emma."

"You watched her humiliate me."

"I watched a vice president direct a junior analyst."

"And then praise her for something you knew I made."

His expression cooled. "Northstar does not award public credit line by line. Vanessa runs Operations. Her team's output is her responsibility."

"Then her team's mistakes are her responsibility too?"

He paused.

I stepped closer.

"Because if this model fails, I already know whose name she'll put on it."

"You're getting emotional."

That sentence hurt more than I expected.

"I am asking for credit I earned."

"And I am asking you to think like an employee, not my wife. If I defend you publicly every time you dislike a management decision, people will notice."

"I am your wife."

"Not in this building."

The words landed hard and clean.

He lowered his voice.

"We agreed to this. I cannot undermine Vanessa's authority because my wife feels slighted."

"Feels slighted?"

"You'll get your chance. Keep your head down. Do good work. Let your numbers speak for you."

I almost laughed.

"My numbers just spoke for Vanessa."

He rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I don't have time for this."

I looked at the closed pantry door, then back at him.

"Did you read my email from last night? The audit notes?"

"I saw it."

"So you know I documented the duplicate data and tariff errors."

"Yes."

"Good."

His brow furrowed. "Why?"

"Because I want there to be a record of who did the work."

For the first time, uncertainty flickered across his face.

I stepped back.

"You were right about one thing. I need better boundaries."

He relaxed slightly, clearly misunderstanding me.

"Good."

"I'm starting with you."

I left the pantry before he could answer.

At my desk, Vanessa's empty coffee cup sat beside my keyboard. She had left it there like a trophy.

I picked it up and dropped it into the trash.

Then I opened a new folder on my encrypted drive and named it Documentation.

Inside, I saved the overnight models, my email timestamps, the version history, and every source file with my authorship attached.

If Northstar wanted to pretend I was invisible, I would make sure the data never did.
