Chapter 1

My father died with the Seattle rain against the hospital window, his hand in mine. The cancer had hollowed him out, but his eyes remained kind until the very end. 'Take care of your mother,' he whispered, and I nodded because I couldn't speak. Sylvia stood on his other side, her face a map of grief she'd been tracing for months. The room smelled of antiseptic and the dying breath of the man who'd raised me.

Two days later, at his funeral, Trenton held my hand so tightly I thought my bones might break. 'I'm here,' he kept saying, his voice warm against my ear. 'I'm not going anywhere, Raya.' I believed him. I believed everything then. I didn't see his phone lighting up in his coat pocket, didn't notice how he angled his body to check the screen when he thought I was distracted by the priest's words. I was too busy trying not to collapse to see the man I'd married for who he really was.

The drive home was quiet, the windshield wipers keeping time with my heartbeat. Trenton drove with one hand on the wheel, the other holding mine. 'We'll get through this,' he said, and I turned to look at him—really look at him—and saw nothing but concern in his eyes. He was so good at it. So practiced.

I didn't know then that he was already planning my death.

The sedative they gave me at Seattle General for my liver evaluation procedure made the world soft at the edges. I remember Carmen Vega, my transplant coordinator, asking questions about my insurance coverage, her voice coming from somewhere far away. I remember Trenton sitting beside my bed, his hand on my arm, telling her not to worry. 'I'll handle everything,' he said.

I woke to find him gone, but the memory of his touch lingered. What I didn't know was that while I'd been drifting, he'd held my phone up to my sleeping face, used my own features to unlock it, and transferred every cent of my father's life insurance—the $500,000 meant to save my life—to an account I'd never heard of.

The next morning, he sat beside me, coffee in hand, and told me a story. 'A childhood friend's mother is critically ill,' he said, his eyes meeting mine without a flicker of deception. 'I lent her a small amount to help with expenses.' He squeezed my hand. 'You don't need to worry about it. Focus on getting better.' I nodded, too exhausted to question, too trusting to see the lie.

It wasn't until three days later that I found it. Sitting in my hospital bed, reviewing the financial paperwork Carmen had asked for, I pulled up my bank statements on my tablet. There it was—a single transaction, $500,000, wired out the morning after my procedure. My hands went cold as I traced the recipient name: J. Gomez.

Jaylani Gomez. The woman Trenton always called his 'little sister from back home.' The pieces began to shift, the ground beneath me cracking open.

That evening, alone in our apartment, I opened Trenton's laptop. The password was one I'd seen him type a hundred times—our wedding date. Inside, a pinned conversation thread. Three years of messages between him and Jaylani. I read them all, my heart turning to ice with each word. The affair. The plan to marry me for financial stability. The Miami organ broker. The London tickets booked for Wednesday.

And then, the message that stopped my breath: 'Just hold on a little longer, baby. Once we get your surgery done, we disappear. She won't even know what happened until it's too late.'

I closed the laptop, replaced it exactly where I'd found it, and sat in the dark. Four minutes of silence. Then I reached for my phone and dialed a number I hadn't used in two years.

'Leandro?' My voice was steady, controlled. 'I need a lawyer. Can you come to the hospital?'

There was a pause on the other end, and I could almost see him straightening, his lawyer's mind already shifting into gear. 'What's wrong, Raya?'

'I can't explain over the phone. Just... come.'

'I'll be there in forty minutes,' he said.

He arrived in thirty-two.
