My Husband Cast His First Love as Me—So I Took Back the Film He Stole
Chapter 3
I stood outside Julian's office for a long second, the rejection letters still clutched in my hands like evidence I couldn't ignore. The hallway felt too quiet, the distant hum of the city outside pressing against the glass. I had walked out earlier with that heavy weight, but the betrayal from Marcus sat heavier than ever. Another powerful producer? No way. Not after everything he'd stolen from me. I couldn't just hand myself over like some easy fix. I turned back, pushed the door open, and stepped inside.
Julian sat behind his desk, papers scattered around a half-empty coffee mug. He looked up when I entered, his expression steady but not surprised. The computer screen glowed with the trailer script open on it, and the two letters from my past lay on the side table like a reminder of how far things had gone wrong.
"Julian," I said, my voice low but clear, "I won't give myself to another powerful producer just because Marcus betrayed me. Tell me exactly what you want first."
He set his pen down and leaned back in his chair, folding his hands on the desk. "Clara, don't hide behind revenge. I won't let you do that to yourself. What do you actually want? Your name?"
I shook my head, the words sticking in my throat for a moment. The letters crinkled under my grip as I set them aside. "My name. That's it."
He nodded once, slow and deliberate. "I can use the manuscript you've already registered under your personal name to stop the trailer from playing. Then you rewrite it, direct the new version yourself. The investment only changes the distribution rights, not your story. It's yours all along."
The offer hung in the air, pulling at something deep inside me. It wasn't just about the trailer; it was about taking back control. I felt the shift in the room, the power balance tipping slightly toward me. Before I could answer, the phone on the desk vibrated and then rang, Marcus's name flashing across the screen.
Julian picked it up without hesitation and put it on speaker. Marcus's voice filled the room, sharp and impatient. "Clara, where the hell are you? The premiere starts in an hour. Get your ass to the theater and sit in the audience like my wife. Continue backing Serena up, just like always. Don't ruin the career we built together, you hear me?"
I didn't hesitate. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my voice came out steady, the first time I had spoken without backing down. "Stop the trailer."
Julian didn't argue or decide for me. He simply backed me, calm and final. "Then let her use her own name."
The line stayed open, Marcus's voice still coming through the speaker, demanding more details I didn't owe him. Julian set the phone down, his eyes locking on mine. He logged into the system on the computer, his fingers moving quickly over the keyboard. I joined him, my hand steady on the mouse as I pulled up the permissions panel. The trailer was scheduled to roll at seven, and the system showed our old access tied to Marcus's name.
"Revoke the distribution rights," Julian said, his tone even. "Freeze the playback completely. No trailer for anyone until we override it with her name."
I clicked the button. Confirmation flashed across the screen: ACCESS REVOKED. The screen went black for a second, then the trailer title appeared but stayed frozen, the play button grayed out. My pulse slowed as the action locked in place. It felt real, immediate, like the first crack in the wall Marcus had built around everything.
Julian leaned back, watching the screen. "Done."
I sat back in the chair, the letters from my past now useless on the table. Marcus still believed I'd show up tonight, sit quietly in the audience, and play the part he wanted. But the trailer was stopped before it even started, and the power had shifted back to me. The room felt smaller, the silence thick with what came next.
The screen stayed frozen, the words ACCESS REVOKED bold and final. Marcus's voice still echoed faintly from the phone on the desk, as if he could reach through it and pull me back into his shadow. But I had just taken the first step, and whatever came after, I was done hiding.
