She Stole My Life Savings,Then Her Mother Left Me Everything Chapter 1

My father-in-law was dying, and the hospital was demanding payment for his surgery.

I rushed to the payment window and swiped my card—only to be told insufficient funds.

I asked the clerk if there'd been some mistake. This was my salary and bonus account. It held every cent I'd saved over the past few years—eighty thousand dollars.

The clerk slid the card back across the counter, her voice dripping with disdain. "There's one dollar in this account."

I stood frozen. My first thought was my wife. I dialed her immediately. "Did you take the money from my account?"

Before she could answer, I heard Jacob James's voice in the background, practically giddy with excitement.

"Ruby Mason, this car is incredible! Thank you for such an amazing birthday gift—I love you forever!"

My jaw tightened. Something dark and hot coiled in my chest.

"Yes, I took it," Ruby said, as casually as if she were discussing the weather. "It's Jacob's birthday. I bought him a car."

"Your father needs that money to survive. Without it, he'll die. Return the car. Now."

"Edgar Gilbert, it's just a few tens of thousands of dollars." Her voice sharpened. "Are you seriously cursing my father to die over this? I want a divorce!"

The line erupted with Ruby's shrill accusations.

I couldn't see her face, but I could picture it perfectly—that wild-eyed look she got when she was ready to tear someone apart.

"Ruby, I'm not joking." I kept my voice steady, though my pulse hammered against my temples. "I'm standing at the hospital payment window right now. Your father needs emergency surgery. It's critical—the hospital gave us half a day. If we don't pay in time, they'll refuse to operate."

I paused, letting each word land.

"He will die."

I laid out the situation as clearly as I could, praying she'd grasp the severity.

She said nothing.

"You like throwing tantrums," I continued, my tone dropping lower. "I've always let it slide. Never made a fuss. But you know me—I would never joke about something like this. There's still time. Return the car and get to the hospital—"

A cold laugh cut me off.

"Edgar, drop the act. Don't pretend you actually care about my father." Her voice turned icy. "He's always been perfectly healthy. And now you're suddenly telling me he needs emergency surgery? I'd have to be brain-dead to believe that."

"Let me make this crystal clear." Each word was a blade. "I already took your money and bought Jacob a car. Tonight, I'm celebrating his birthday with him. We'll probably drink. If I have too much, I'll get a hotel room. Don't wait up."

She paused, and I heard her take a breath.

"And stop calling me. I'm turning off my phone."

Click.

I called back.

The number you have dialed is powered off.

"Damn it!"

The curse tore out of me before I could stop it. I stood there, chest heaving, then forced myself to walk back to the hospital room.

Nurse Emily Carter had just finished drawing my father-in-law's blood. She glanced up as I entered. "Has the payment been submitted?"

I shook my head slowly, unable to meet her eyes.

She frowned. "The patient's condition is serious. Every minute we delay makes it worse."

"I'll figure it out," I said. "Soon."

The moment she left, my mother-in-law rushed over and seized my hands. Her eyes were red-rimmed, her voice trembling. "Edgar, why hasn't the payment gone through?"

"Mom... I'm sorry. I—" The words caught in my throat. I exhaled slowly. "I tried."

"What happened?" Silvia Mason's grip tightened, her nails digging into my skin. "Edgar, tell me."
