Chapter 1

The spotlight followed me as I took my final pose, arms extended in a perfect line, my breath coming in controlled gasps. The arena erupted in applause. After years of sacrifice—countless hours on the ice, skipped meals to afford training, the painful rejection of normal teenage life—this moment belonged to me.

"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer's voice boomed through the speakers, "after a flawless performance that showcased both technical precision and artistic brilliance, we have our new champion!"

I blinked against the flash of cameras, my grandmother's red bracelet warm against my wrist. The judges' scores appeared on the massive screen: 9.8, 9.9, 9.7... The numbers blurred through my tears as I realized what they meant. Gold. Finally.

Backstage was chaos—coaches shouting congratulations, fellow competitors offering quick hugs before rushing to their own events. I pushed through the crowd, searching for Langston. Three years together, and he'd promised to be here when I claimed my victory.

"He's probably waiting by the exit," I muttered to myself, dodging a cameraman who nearly knocked me over with his equipment.

I turned down a quieter hallway, expecting to find Langston there with that crooked smile that had first caught my attention at the training center café. Instead, I heard his voice—low, urgent, familiar in a way that made me pause.

"I've taken care of everything," he was saying, his tone different from the warm one he used with me. "The medal will be yours by tomorrow."

My heart stuttered. I pressed myself against the wall, suddenly aware of how thin the backstage partitions were.

"But Langston," Zaria's voice replied, petulant and somehow triumphant, "what if someone questions the decision?"

"They won't." His voice hardened. "My family's influence with the federation means no one will challenge it. Besides, she'll never know."

The words hit me like a physical blow. She'll never know. The medal will be yours. My fingers found my grandmother's bracelet, twisting it frantically as the truth crashed down on me.

---

Hours later, in my tiny apartment that smelled of old coffee and secondhand furniture, I confronted him.

"What did you mean when you said the medal would be Zaria's?" I demanded, my voice surprisingly steady despite the storm inside me.

Langston's face flickered—surprise, guilt, then something calculated. He set down his phone and crossed the room in three quick strides.

"Elianna, baby, you misunderstood." His hands cupped my face, thumbs brushing away tears I hadn't realized were falling. "Zaria was upset about losing, and I was just trying to comfort her."

"By promising her my medal?" My voice cracked this time.

"It's not like that." He knelt before me, pulling something from his pocket. The diamond caught the dim light of my apartment, throwing tiny rainbows across his face. "I was going to wait until after the celebration dinner tomorrow, but..."

The ring gleamed up at me—expensive, perfect, nothing like the handmade bracelet on my wrist.

"Marry me," he said, his eyes intense. "Let me prove where my loyalties really are."

I stared at him, at the ring that represented everything I thought I wanted. Security. Love. A future beyond skating.

"Why now?" I whispered, touching my bracelet for courage.

"Because I can't imagine my life without you." His voice was honey-smooth. "What you overheard—it was just me being kind to an old friend. You're the one I want to spend my life with."

Something in my gut twisted, but exhaustion and hope drowned it out. I nodded slowly.

"Yes," I said, as he slipped the ring onto my finger.

---

The next morning, I sat frozen on my threadbare couch, staring at the television screen. The news anchor's voice was crisp and professional.

"In a surprising turn of events, the figure skating federation has announced a scoring adjustment for yesterday's championship. After a technical review of performance errors, silver medalist Zaria Webb has been elevated to gold."

The camera cut to Zaria, resplendent in a designer outfit I could never afford, holding my medal—my medal—with practiced grace.

"I'm just so honored," she said, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. "This victory represents years of hard work and dedication."

My phone remained silent. No calls from Langston. No explanation.

I pulled up videos of my performance on my laptop, studying every jump, every spin. Perfect. Flawless. The commentators had said so themselves.

Yet there it was on the screen—the official results, with Zaria's name at the top.

I dialed the federation's number with trembling fingers.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Nguyen," the receptionist said after connecting me to someone who could supposedly help. "We can't discuss scoring decisions over the phone."

One by one, I called everyone who might know something—my coach, fellow competitors, even a judge I'd once helped when he'd fallen ill at a competition. Each conversation ended the same way: awkward silences, muttered sympathies, and the clear message that no one would speak against the official decision.

As I hung up after the last call, a text message appeared on my phone. It was from Langston.

"Working late tonight. Don't wait up."

I stared at the words until they blurred, then looked back at the television where Zaria was still basking in her stolen glory.

My grandmother's bracelet felt heavy on my wrist, like a weight pulling me down into dark water.
