Chapter 1

The glass walls of the boardroom reflected Seattle's gray sky as I settled into my chair, smoothing my skirt with trembling fingers. The annual executive meeting—the moment I'd been waiting for all year. My algorithms had tripled ClarkTech's market valuation, and Jacob had promised me a $300,000 bonus. Just enough to cover Mother's surgery.

I glanced at Jacob across the polished table, his perfectly tailored suit catching the light. He winked at me, that charming smile that once made my heart race. Now it just made my stomach clench.

"Let's discuss our quarterly performance," Jacob announced, his voice carrying that practiced confidence that had fooled investors for years. "As you know, ClarkTech's success is built on innovation—on the brilliant minds that drive our products."

My cheeks warmed despite myself. For once, he was acknowledging my contribution.

"Which is why," he continued, sliding a folder across the table, "we're implementing a restructuring of our rewards system."

Something in his tone made my fingers freeze over my tablet. I watched as the board members flipped through the documents, nodding approvingly.

"Willa Roberts," Jacob said, gesturing to his executive assistant sitting three seats away from me, "has demonstrated exceptional client relations skills that have directly increased our revenue streams."

Willa's red lips curved into a smile as she batted her eyelashes. "It's just my job, Mr. Clark."

"Exceptional work deserves exceptional recognition," Jacob replied, his eyes never leaving hers. "Which is why I'm transferring Zara's performance bonus to Willa this quarter."

The room tilted sideways. I gripped the edge of the table, my knuckles white.

"Jacob," I whispered, but he continued as if I hadn't spoken.

"The full $300,000 will be transferred to Willa's account today."

The board members nodded, some avoiding my gaze. None of them knew—none of them understood that every algorithm, every innovation they were profiting from had come from my mind.

After the meeting, I followed Jacob into his glass-walled office, my heels clicking against the marble floor.

"My bonus," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. "You promised me that money for Mother's surgery."

Jacob leaned against his desk, arms crossed. "Plans change, Zara."

"I need that money," I insisted, fighting to keep my voice level. "We agreed—"

"What you need," he interrupted, "is to understand your place here." He reached into his pocket and tossed something across the desk. A Starbucks gift card skidded toward me, the amount visible: $50.

"Your daily coffee is on me," he said with a smirk. "Be grateful I let you play on your computer all day while real executives handle the actual business."

---

That evening, I sat alone in our penthouse, staring at the Seattle skyline through tear-blurred eyes. The gift card lay on the coffee table beside me, a mockery of everything I'd sacrificed.

My phone rang, the hospital's number flashing on the screen.

"Ms. Walker?" The voice was urgent. "Your mother has suffered a cardiac arrest. The doctors have stabilized her for now, but she needs immediate surgical intervention to remain eligible for transplant."

My heart pounded against my ribs. "I'll be right there."

"There's one more thing," the nurse added. "The procedure requires an upfront payment of $50,000. Insurance won't cover pre-transplant stabilization."

"I understand," I managed, my mouth dry. "I'll arrange it immediately."

I hung up and rushed to our home office, logging into our joint savings account. The screen loaded, displaying an error message: "Access Denied."

I tried again, typing in our anniversary date—the PIN we'd always used.

"Invalid PIN."

My fingers trembled as I tried Jacob's birthday. Nothing.

---

The smell of expensive wine and laughter greeted me as I burst through the penthouse door. Jacob and Willa sat at our dining table, an open bottle of Dom Prignon between them.

"Jacob," I gasped, still clutching my phone. "Mother's had another heart attack. She needs surgery tonight."

Jacob took a slow sip of his wine, his eyes never leaving mine. "That's unfortunate timing."

"I need access to our savings," I pleaded, stepping closer. "Just $50,000 for the pre-payment."

He set down his glass with deliberate slowness. "The money is tied up in IPO preparation. Every dollar counts right now."

"She could die," I whispered, my voice breaking.

Willa's laugh cut through the tension. "Maybe it's time to let nature take its course," she suggested, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "An old woman's life versus the future of ClarkTech? Seems like an easy choice to me."

Jacob nodded slowly, his expression cold. "Willa has a point, Zara. You're being hysterical again."

"I'm not being hysterical," I said, my voice rising despite my efforts to stay calm. "My mother is dying."

"Your obsession with your mother is becoming a liability," Jacob replied, turning back to Willa. "Perhaps you should reconsider your priorities."

I stood frozen between them, the gift card burning in my pocket while my mother fought for her life across town.
