Chapter 6

The street smelled like wet cardboard and fried food the next morning. Elena kept the photograph in her pocket like something that could cut and heal at the same time. The picture pressed against her thigh and she felt it whenever she moved.

She opened the shop and let the light in slow. The two machines looked smaller in daylight, ordinary and stubborn. Caleb sat on a crate with his phone. He had the look of someone who’d done adult things but was still a kid. He stood when she walked in, careful with his smile.

“You okay?” he asked.

Elena touched the photo in her pocket and answered with small words. “I think so.”

Zara came in like a storm three minutes later, arms full of coffee and the kind of energy that could make a dull thing burn bright. “You look like you slept on a pile of secret plans,” she said. “Tell me.”

Elena put the photograph on the table. Zara whistled low. “That’s…something.”

Caleb tapped his phone and held it up. “I found the van’s route. I used the street cameras and pulled the time stamp. It went from a warehouse on Third to here. The warehouse address—look.” He slid the phone to Elena. A map blinked with a red dot.

She read the address and felt the floor tilt. “Third Street,” she repeated. “That’s by the docks.”

Zara cursed under her breath. “Then we go to the docks. Tonight. We don’t wait for them to hide things again.”

Jordan called at noon. His voice was clipped, business-first. “We pulled the van manifest. The broker name is Moreno Trades. They move samples for a lot of brands. The odd thing is the paperwork points to a shipping account tied to a Cole Atelier vendor. I’m getting copies now.”

Elena’s hand tightened on the edge of the table until her nails hurt. “So someone sent Cole stuff to my shop.”

“Looks that way,” Jordan said. “Either someone’s sloppy, or someone wants a story on record.”

“Who?” Zara asked. “Who would plant a card and a tag that says ‘Cole property’?”

Jordan was quiet. “It’s not a simple answer.”

She told him she would not sign any contract yet. She told him she needed time to think and to talk to a lawyer. He agreed politely and then his tone softened in a way that made her skin prick. “If you want, bring any evidence to our legal counsel,” he said. “We’ll get a full inventory. I want the truth found.”

Elena heard the thing under his words—help and warning braided together. She did not know if she could trust it. She did not trust him much. But at the same time he was one of the few with reach. She thought of Aryan sitting behind glass that smelled like lemon. She thought of how he had touched the cloth. She thought, also, of the way his eyes found hers sometimes and stayed.

“Bring the photo,” she said. “And the tag. Bring everything.”

After the call, she went through the boxes again. The shop was a mess of fabric and loose notes. She moved things slow with her hands, the way a woman picks at a scab to see if it will bleed or heal. Her fingers found small things—buttons, a torn pattern, a matchbook from a cafe. Then her hand closed on a small tin, black with rust at the edge. Her mother had hidden things in tins. She could feel it.

Inside was a folded paper that smelled faintly of cigar smoke and perfume. She unfolded it and read. It was a receipt. It had an address she had never seen before and a stamped stamp that said COLE ATELIER in a stiff circle. Below, in handwriting that might be a signature or might be a name in a hurry, were the letters: C. COLE.

Her stomach dropped. The paper might be faked. It might be planted. It might be the only proof she would ever hold. She slid it into an envelope and put the envelope against her chest like a talisman.

“Ellie,” Zara said when she saw the paper, “if that’s real—whoa.”

“How do we prove it?” Elena asked. Her voice sounded like raw cloth being torn.

Caleb, who had been quiet, said, “I can pull more footage. I can get the manifest scans. I can try Zac’s server at school—he’s into scraping public records. If the warehouse had a delivery manifest with driver names, we might match the signatures.”

Elena looked at him and felt a fierce pride. “Do it,” she said. “But quiet.”

They worked like thieves. Caleb hunched over the phone. Zara made calls with a smooth, loud voice that begged favors. Elena kept the tin near the cash box, as if it would protect the money or the truth—or both.

By late afternoon Jordan sent the file. Elena opened it with hands that would not stop shaking. It showed a stamped order. It showed a list: bolts of fabric, sample tags, a shipment code. A line at the bottom read: Released by: C. Cole. Another line showed a receiving address—Warehouse 32, Third Dock—and a time stamp.

“Elena,” Jordan said in the call. “This is not a rumor. The records show the shipment cleared Cole’s vendor account.”

She let the phone drop. Her thumb left a black smear on the screen. She wanted to throw the phone, to fling it into the sink and let it stop talking. She did not. She took a breath and walked to the front window.

Outside, people moved in small regular lives. A man rolled down his car window and shouted about rent. A child chased a pigeon. The world obeyed small orders while she stared at a paper that had her mother’s name and a Cole stamp on it.

She felt anger and a clean, hard kind of clarity. “Call your lawyer,” she told Jordan. “And your security. And get those files saved three ways. Take them off-line.”

“I’m on it,” Jordan said. “But Elena—be careful. If this gets out messy people will move fast.”

“I know how to move fast,” she said.

At sunset, Zara put on a jacket and Elena wrapped a scarf around her neck. Caleb packed the laptop. They drove out to the docks with a small plan: look, photograph, record. Not break anything. Not start a war before they had a weapon.

At Warehouse 32 the dock smelled of diesel and salt. A man at the gate eyed them and asked their business. Elena said she was a small tailor checking on a delivery mistake. He let them through because late-night couriers see many small wrongs. The warehouse lights were like moons. Boxes sat stacked like tiny buildings.

They found a row tagged COLE ATELIER and pried a seam open. Inside were bolts of fabric and a zip-bag of sample tags. She lifted one and read the tag aloud. “Cole Atelier. Sample: shoulder line. Designer: Margaret Carter.”

It was a tag like the one that had been left in her shop. Her hands trembled so hard she had to sit on a crate. The world hummed in the cold air and she felt something inside click like a latch. She had the proof she wanted.

A voice behind her said, calm and soft, “You found what you were looking for.”

She turned so fast she almost dropped the bolt. He stood in the doorway like a man who had expected her. Tall. Black suit. The light caught the edge of his jaw. His face was in shadow enough to be dangerous and close enough to make her chest hurt.

“Aryan,” she said.

He smiled like paper folding. “You shouldn’t be here.”

Her feet did not move. The bolt of fabric pressed into her palm and left a thread on her thumb. She felt it like a burn.

“How much did you know?” she asked, and the words were small and sharp.

He stepped closer. The warehouse smelled like fabric and old glue. He looked at the sample tag in her hand and then at her face, and finally at the photograph in her pocket.

“You found it,” he said. “Good.” His voice was low. “We need to talk.”

Outside, the dock gate clanged closed behind a car she did not remember arriving. The night settled like a curtain.

Elena gripped the fabric until her fingers ached. The proof lay in her hand. The man she had once nearly trusted stood inches away. She felt both danger and a terrible, stupid ache that was not only for the shop.

“Talk,” she said. “But be careful how you speak. I have the paper now.”

He nodded like a person who had expected battle and loved the idea of it. “I know,” he said. “I know everything.”

The door behind them closed with a sound like a judge’s gavel.
