Chapter 6

C2

The shelf in Sophia’s kitchen had been crooked since the day she moved in.

She noticed it every time she reached for a mug—the way the wood listed slightly to the left, the faint gap where the bracket had pulled free from the wall.

It was a small thing, the kind of repair that should have taken ten minutes and a screwdriver. Instead it sat there for days, a quiet reminder that she was still living in the middle of someone else’s unfinished life.

On Thursday afternoon the silence of the house finally got to her. She dragged a step stool into the kitchen, found the toolbox the previous owners had left under the sink, and set to work. The bracket was stubborn.

The screws refused to bite cleanly into the plaster. After twenty minutes of swearing under her breath and nearly dropping the entire shelf on her foot, she heard a knock at the side door.

Lucas stood on the small porch with a half-smile and a tool bag hanging from one hand.

“Saw you wrestling with something,” he said. “Figured I’d offer before you put a hole through the wall.”

Sophia hesitated only a second. The memory of the previous night, his body under the blue lights, the deliberate way he had looked up at her window flashed hot behind her eyes. She stepped aside anyway.

“It’s just a shelf,” she said. “It keeps listing.”

He followed her into the kitchen. The space suddenly felt smaller. He was taller than she remembered, broad enough that his shoulders nearly filled the doorway. He set the tool bag on the counter and examined the shelf with quiet efficiency, testing the bracket, running a thumb along the edge of the wood

.

“Bracket’s stripped,” he said. “Easy fix if you’ve got a stud finder or I can just do it the old-fashioned way.”

Sophia nodded. “Old-fashioned is fine.”

He worked without rushing. She stood a few feet away, arms crossed, trying not to watch the way the muscles in his forearms shifted as he drove new screws into the wall.

The afternoon light came in slanted through the window above the sink, catching the faint sheen of sweat at the base of his throat. When he needed her to hold the shelf steady, he stepped behind her without asking.

“Just keep it level,” he said, voice low near her ear.

Sophia’s spine went rigid. His chest was a solid heat against her back. His arms reached around her on either side, large hands bracing the wood while he worked the drill.

She could smell him clean soap, a trace of chlorine that never quite left his skin, something warmer underneath. Every time he shifted, the front of his body brushed hers. She kept her eyes fixed on the shelf and tried to breathe normally.

“You’re good,” he murmured after a minute. “Don’t move.”

She didn’t. She stood there trapped between his body and the wall, pulse hammering in her throat, while he finished the last screw. When he finally stepped back the air felt colder. Sophia’s hands were trembling faintly as she tested the shelf. It held perfectly.

“Thank you,” she said, and meant it more than the words could carry.

Lucas packed his tools slowly. Their eyes met once across the small kitchen. Neither of them mentioned the nights, neither of them mentioned the way he had stood dripping under the outdoor light and looked straight at her silhouette.

The silence between them was thick enough to taste.

“Anytime,” he said at the door. “If anything else starts falling apart, you know where I am.”

She watched him cross the lawn back to his own house. The kids’ bikes were gone from the driveway. School day, alone again.

The rest of the afternoon stretched long and restless. Sophia tried to work, tried to answer emails, tried to pretend the heat still lingering low in her belly was nothing more than leftover embarrassment. Every time she walked through the kitchen she felt the ghost of his chest against her back, the low rumble of his voice near her ear.

That night she “forgot” the curtains again.

She told herself it was an accident. She told herself she was simply too tired to remember. The truth was simpler and sharper: she wanted to see if he would come out. She wanted to know whether the daytime nearness had changed anything.

At 11:58 the sliding door opened.

Lucas stepped onto the deck already barefoot, already peeling his shirt over his head. He moved slower than usual, as if he knew exactly who was watching.

He pushed his shorts down and stood for a moment under the outdoor light, completely naked, letting the night air touch every inch of him then he dove.

He swam longer than any night before.

Lap after lap, powerful and unhurried, until the water was a soft blue chaos around him. When he finally climbed out he didn’t reach for a towel. He stood on the deck with water streaming down his chest, his stomach, the heavy length of his cock. He tilted his head back and looked directly at her window.

Sophia’s breath stalled. She was standing closer to the glass than she had ever allowed herself. Her thin nightgown clung to her thighs. She knew her silhouette was clear. She knew he could see the shape of her.

He stayed there for nearly a full minute, water dripping steadily onto the concrete, before he finally turned and walked inside.

Sophia’s phone rang the moment she stepped away from the window. It was Marcus.

She almost let it go to voicemail. Something mean and restless made her answer instead. “What,” she said.

His voice came through tired and familiar and suddenly unbearable. “You still haven’t sent the signed papers. The lawyer keeps emailing me.”

“I’ll send them when I’m ready.”

“Sophia—”

“Don’t.” The word came out sharper than she intended. “You don’t get to call me at midnight and act like I’m the one dragging this out, you left remember?”

The argument escalated fast. Old wounds opened with practiced ease, the way he had stopped touching her months before the end, the way she had stopped asking, the way neither of them had fought hard enough to save anything.

By the time she hung up her hands were shaking and her throat felt raw. She dropped the phone on the nightstand and sat on the edge of the bed with her head in her hands. Angry, aching, lonelier than she had been in weeks.

She turned off the lamp and tried to sleep. Sleep refused to come. Every time she closed her eyes she saw Lucas standing under the outdoor light, water running down his body, looking up at her as if he already knew exactly what she needed.

At 12:17 her phone lit up with a text from an unknown number.

“Couldn’t sleep either, pool’s still warm if you want to cool off.”

Sophia stared at the message until the screen went dark, then lit it again. Her heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her fingertips. She stood and walked to the window one more time.

The pool lights were still on. The water lay quiet and inviting under the moonlight. No sign of Lucas on the deck, but the invitation hung in the air between the two houses like a held breath.

She looked down at herself. The thin nightgown, bare feet, the restless, guilty heat still coiled low in her stomach.

Sophia rested her forehead against the cool glass and stood there for a long time, heart racing, deciding whether to go downstairs.
