Chapter 1

I spent nine years with Damon Rook, watching him transform from an unknown young man into a rising star in the business world.

I moved out of my home to live in a small rented apartment with him, accompanying him to social events, introducing him to contacts, and enduring endless business dinners—all while developing a slew of stomach issues from the stress.

"Zoey Thatcher, just wait a little longer for me. Once I succeed, I’ll make you the happiest woman in the world."

I can't remember the exact night Damon said this, but I vividly recall the way his eyes sparkled, completely focused on me. So, despite the warnings from others, I threw myself into it wholeheartedly, without hesitation.

But I never imagined the boy who once saw only me in his eyes would betray me, just a month before our wedding, turning my heartfelt love into nothing more than worthless sentiment.

I leaned weakly against the bathroom sink, massaging my aching stomach with my pale fingers. I raised my hand to rub my reddening face in the mirror.

"Zoey, are you alright?"

Joy Vance, my assistant, called from outside, concern lacing her voice. I assured her I was fine, then opened the door, though my steps were unsteady.

"Zoey, here are some hangover and stomach pills. Let me get you some warm water..."

I reached out and grabbed Joy’s wrist, taking the pills from her and swallowing them without hesitation.

"No need to bother. The old foxes in there are about to be drunk."

I rubbed my brow, glancing at the time on my wrist and sighing in relief.

Half an hour… that should be enough time.

Leaning on Joy, I slowly walked out of the VIP room. I straightened up, adjusted my slightly wrinkled clothes, and forced a composed smile before opening the door.

Just hold on a little longer, Zoey. This project is crucial for both Damon and Rook Group.

After seeing off the business partners with the last of my remaining dignity, my legs gave out beneath me. I collapsed into Joy’s arms, the stomach pain so sharp it felt like it might explode. My breath came in shallow gasps, and when I spoke, my voice was weary.

"Don’t take me home yet. Take me to Moon Bay, the dessert shop."

After saying that, I completely let go, allowing Joy to help me into the car. My hands, pressed against my stomach, turned white as I sank into the back seat, feeling faint and dizzy.

"Zoey? Zoey, we’re here."

Joy gently shook my arm, her voice soft with concern. She raised a cup of hot coffee and the pills in her hand, speaking hesitantly.

"I saw you clutching your stomach, so I bought some medicine and hot coffee. It should help you feel a bit better."

At the sound of her words, my muddled thoughts cleared slightly. The pain in my stomach seemed to miraculously fade, and warmth seemed to spread through me.

"Thank you for today. I have some things to take care of, and if I remember correctly, your home is nearby. It’s getting late, so you should head home. I’ll cover the fare, and I’ll call a driver later."

After speaking, I got out of the car, took the coffee and pills from Joy’s hands, smiled, and waved goodbye before walking toward the dessert shop.

I wondered if the custom-made anniversary cake for our ninth year was ready.

Thinking of this, I quickened my pace. But as I stood at the entrance of the shop and looked inside, my feet seemed to be nailed to the ground. The coffee and pills slipped from my fingers.

Pedestrians on the street turned to glance at me, but I couldn’t care less. My gaze was fixed on the two people sitting inside.

It was Damon—and a young woman I didn’t recognize.
