Chapter 2

David lunged across the mahogany table, his fingers stretching toward my phone. My thumb clamped down on the side buttons before his hand could reach the glass. The screen flashed white, capturing the notification. I tapped the share icon, routing the image of his lock screen directly to my encrypted email account.

"Give it to me, Nora," he demanded, his hand hovering over my plate. "You are invading my privacy."

"Privacy?" I asked, pulling the phone out of his reach and slipping it into my blazer pocket. "You left it face-up next to your steak. Grabbing the device will not un-send the server timestamp."

He froze, retracting his arm. He adjusted his collar, refusing to meet my gaze. "Vanessa was just proofreading the rules for the trial. It is standard legal review."

"Since when does a marketing assistant handle legal reviews?" I asked.

"She has a background in compliance," he shot back, his voice rising defensive and sharp.

"Aunt Vanessa does not even work at the company," Sophie blurted out.

The dining room fell silent. Sophie clamped her mouth shut, her eyes darting between us. She gripped her silver fork so hard her knuckles turned white.

"I just guessed," she rushed the words out, her voice cracking.

I memorized the exact pitch of her lie. My seventeen-year-old daughter was covering for a woman she supposedly rarely saw. I did not push her. I would not break a child at the dinner table over her father's mistakes.

"Section three of your contract forbids interfering with personal choices," I told David, tapping the six printed pages he had presented. "You have no right to demand I delete anything."

His jaw tightened, a muscle jumping beneath his skin. He had nothing to say. I picked up the manila envelope from the console and slid the printed contract inside.

I pulled my laptop from my leather tote bag and set it next to the champagne bottle. I opened the shared family calendar, flipping back through the past fourteen months.

"Forty-seven times," I said, rotating the screen so they both could see the highlighted red blocks I had created. "Forty-seven midnight texts followed by sudden departures from this house."

David scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest. "I run a startup, Nora. Emergencies happen. You know this."

"Global clients who only text you at midnight on weekends?" I asked.

"Time zones," he insisted. "You used to understand how business works."

"Six of those times, you were not the one who told me," I said, shifting my focus to Sophie. "You did."

Sophie shrank back into her chair.

"Server crashes. Client pitch realignments. Flight routing issues," I read from the screen, listing the exact excuses she had given me over the past year. "Who taught you to say client crisis, Sophie?"

She shoved her chair back. The wooden legs screeched against the floorboards. "Why do you turn everything into an interrogation? You make everyone miserable!"

David stepped around the table, placing a hand on Sophie's shoulder. He stood tall, framing himself as her protector against me.

"This is exactly why I proposed the open marriage," David said, his tone adopting that practiced, clinical sympathy again. "Your controlling nature suffocates this family. You track my movements. You interrogate our daughter."

I reached into the cardboard box on the console table and pulled out the silver NICU bracelet. It caught the overhead chandelier light.

"When she wore this, I edited your promotional videos with one hand and nursed her with the other," I said, keeping my voice level. "I paid your server bills from my savings account. I kept your company alive."

I dropped the silver band back into the box. It landed with a soft clink.

"Do not rewrite my exhaustion as natural bitterness, David. I will not allow it."

I carried my laptop to the kitchen island, leaving them standing in the dining room. I logged into my old industry email, an account I had ignored for three years. Three unread messages sat at the top of the inbox, all inquiries for independent documentary editing. David always insisted freelance work never brought in real money. I opened the first thread from a director named Julian, typed a quick reply asking for raw footage and budget estimates, and hit send.

Next, I accessed our joint bank portal. I downloaded the monthly statements from the past two years. A recurring line item caught my eye. Two thousand four hundred dollars, transferred on the first of every month to an external account ending in 4409. The description simply read client hospitality. He had never mentioned a hospitality account.

I attached the PDFs to a new message addressed to Marisol Vega, my college roommate and a family lawyer.

"How do I legally preserve these records?" I typed. "Do not file anything yet. I just need to know my options."

A notification chimed on my phone.

Alert: Joint Visa permissions modified by Primary User.

I spun around. David stood in the hallway, staring at his phone screen.

"You just changed the credit card alerts to only notify you," I said, walking toward him.

He shoved his phone into his pocket. "It is a system glitch. The app updates on Tuesdays."

I held up my screen, displaying the bank's automated text. "Restore two-way notifications right now, or this trial contract is void tonight."

David glared at me, his nostrils flaring. He pulled his phone back out, his thumb jabbing the screen with sharp, angry taps. A second later, my phone buzzed with the restoration alert.

I walked up the stairs, grabbed my pillow from the master bed, and headed toward the guest room. Halfway down the hall, I stopped. I looked at the closed guest room door, then back at the expansive master suite.

I turned around, marched into the master closet, and grabbed an armful of his spare suits and ties. The plastic hangers clattered against each other. I hauled them down the hall and dumped them on the guest bed. I went back for his watches, his shoes, and his overnight bag. I was not leaving my own bedroom. He could take the spare room.

Back in the master suite, I locked the door and opened my laptop again. The second documentary invitation sat in my inbox.

Project Title: Who owns the authorship of a story?

The rate was eighteen thousand dollars for an eight-week timeline. The premise hit me hard. Ten years ago, a filmmaker named Eli got pushed out of his own Northstar pitch by his partners. The themes overlapped perfectly. I hit reply and asked to schedule a call for tomorrow morning.

My phone vibrated on the nightstand. A text from Marisol illuminated the dark room.

"These transfers do not look like client hospitality. Find the page David does not want you to see before 9 AM tomorrow."

A heavy knock rattled the bedroom door.

"Nora," David called out, his voice muffled through the wood. "Are you packing to leave me?"
