Chapter 1

: The 18th-Tier Starlet

I'm a D-list star.

My Patron is a famous Best Actor, and the latest gossip is that he's going to marry the new Best Actress.

I absolutely couldn't let the Best Actor be the bad guy in this situation.

So, I dutifully tapped out a text message: "Wishing you happiness!"

That night, the Best Actor cornered me at the entrance to a bar. "And you... just how do you plan on making me happy?"

"Doesn't that mean Zia Ellsworth is getting kicked to the curb?"

I had just walked into the company when I overheard two receptionists gossiping—about me.

'I was never the main wife, so how could I be the one getting kicked out?'

When the two of them saw me, they exchanged a few nudges and immediately fell silent.

I didn't say anything to defend myself and just got into the elevator.

I'd heard Mr. Kincaid was getting married.

The reason they were gossiping about me is that everyone says I'm the woman being kept by Best Actor Silas Kincaid.

I'll admit, it's true that Silas Kincaid is my Patron, but the idea that he's 'keeping' me is nonsense.

Our relationship is purely financial—he gives me resources, and I make money for him. To put it simply, I'm just his employee.

The problem is, I'm resistant to fame. No matter how much he promotes me, I never get popular, and I'm still just a D-list star to this day.

I had just finished shooting a series and was back at the company for a meeting. I figured I should stop by and say hello to Mr. Kincaid. It was the least I could do, considering Silas Kincaid had never given up on me all these years.

I knocked and went in. Silas Kincaid looked up and glanced at me calmly. "You're back."

"Yeah." I took a couple of steps forward. "Mr. Kincaid, I'm back for a meeting."

Silas Kincaid closed the script in his hands and casually tossed it on the desk. "No need. I've already picked out your next project."

He pointed a finger at the script on the desk. I got the hint instantly and picked it up to look.

It was a movie script.

"Mr. Kincaid, I can't even carry TV ratings. I'll be even worse for the box office," I muttered under my breath.

I'm very self-aware. Silas Kincaid has invested a lot of resources in me, hoping I could earn him some money.

Every other investment he makes turns a profit!

It's only the money he's invested in me that's basically all gone down the drain.

"I'm the male lead."

Silas Kincaid raised an eyebrow, his gaze landing on me.

Ah, now I understood what he meant. He would carry the box office, and I would just ride his coattails.

Mr. Kincaid really had gone to great lengths to make me famous. I had a reputation in the industry as 'The Co-star Jinx,' which was why male actors hated being paired with me.

Silas Kincaid was a top Best Actor, a Grand Slam winner at that. And for my sake, he was willing to risk his own career. What a great boss.

I gave him a mental thumbs-up.

Fortunately, he owned his own film company. He had money, status, and influence. Even if he stopped acting, he wouldn't be short on cash.

'He probably doesn't really care if this movie bombs, does he?'

I nodded quickly. "I'll take it, then. Thank you, Mr. Kincaid."

"You just finished a project, so take a few days off to rest," Silas Kincaid said, his voice gentle.

Everyone says he's difficult to get along with—cold, aloof, with an intimidating aura that keeps people away. But that's because they don't know the real Silas Kincaid.

In my eyes, Silas Kincaid was the very definition of a cultured and easy-going gentleman.

He'd never even thought about giving up on a D-list star like me, who bombed every single project she was in!

"Thank you, Mr. Kincaid."

I left with the script and had just closed the door behind me.

When the CLICK-CLACK of high heels sounded nearby. I turned to see a beautiful woman.

It was the new Best Actress, Nora Calloway—the very woman the tabloids said was going to marry Silas Kincaid.

It looked like it wasn't just a rumor anymore; it was real. I'd overheard the receptionists saying that Nora had been visiting Silas Kincaid often recently and that they were very close.

'This must be the future Mrs. Kincaid! I have to get on her good side!'

I hurried forward to greet her. "Nora, hello."
