Chapter 12

Maya's idea of sitting down for something was a voice note that lasted eleven minutes and twenty-three seconds, recorded in the specific rapid-fire tone she used when she'd been awake all night and found something she genuinely wished she could un-find.

Elara sat cross-legged on her bed with earphones in and listened to every second of it. By minute three, she had stopped moving. By minute six, her hand was pressed flat on the mattress. By minute nine, she had stopped breathing in any normal rhythm.

"Okay so," Maya said at the beginning, "You know how I said I was working through the routing layers on the shell? Three layers deep, and it kept looping back to registered agents who existed solely on paper. Standard concealment structure, nothing unusual, just patient. I've broken those before; I just needed time." The sound of her eating something crunchy at what was presumably an ungodly hour. "Well. I got through."

A pause on the recording. Then: "The account at the bottom of all of it, the account actually collecting the money, the one that all the routing is designed to protect, is registered to a real person. Not a shell. Not a holding entity. A real private individual."

Another pause, shorter.

"Elara. The name is C. Vaughn."

The room went absolutely still.

"I ran it twice," Maya continued. "Three times. I thought I'd made an error somewhere in the routing trace and pulled the wrong name from the wrong layer. I hadn't. This account has been receiving quarterly transfers for eleven years. Consistent amounts, consistent timing. Not all the money... roughly a third of each transfer comes through this account. The other two-thirds route somewhere else I haven't fully cracked yet. But a third of everything that has ever moved through that shell has gone directly to your father. For eleven years."

The recording ended.

Elara sat in the quiet of her room and let it land.

She had come here to prove her father was innocent. That was the premise. That was the architecture of the last four months, every move she'd made, every rule she'd bent, the contract marriage, the archive access, the midnight conversations she'd let herself have in the kitchen when her guard was down. All of it built on the foundation of my father was framed, and I'm going to prove it, and when I do, I'll take Rowan Vale apart with the same evidence he used to destroy my family.

And Maya had just told her that her father had been receiving money from the shell account for eleven years.

She pressed both fists against her eyes until she saw white.

There's an explanation. There has to be. There is always an explanation for money if you look at it from the right angle.

She knew that was true. She had believed it in DA office case rooms when the numbers looked damning and her job was to find the context that changed the picture.

But she also knew, in the part of herself that was professional and trained and had no personal stake in this particular outcome, that money moving this quietly, this consistently, at this scale, for over a decade, had only one kind of explanation. And it was not the kind that made her father a victim.

Her phone buzzed. Maya, text: I'm still working. There are two more layers in the outer trail I haven't broken yet. Don't draw conclusions until I have the full map. Promise me you won't do anything with this until I have everything. Okay?

Elara stared at the message for a long time.

Then she typed: Okay. I promise.

She put the phone down and stood up and went to the bathroom and ran cold water over her wrists and the back of her neck until the tight, panicked feeling in her chest loosened enough to think with.

Then she went back to her desk and sat down and opened a blank document.

She thought about her father's studies. The evidence wall. Every year of her life, framed and hung. He had called it that with such warmth... the evidence wall. Evidence of all the good years. Evidence of a life built cleanly, documented carefully, nothing to hide.

She had always thought the wall was for her. A monument to how watched-over she was, how loved. She had grown up looking at it and feeling held by it.

She thought now: what if it was built for him? What if it was the performance of a clean life, built by a man who knew very well that what was underneath was not clean, and who surrounded himself with proof of domesticity and fatherhood and warmth so that no one, including himself, would look too closely?

She typed three words at the top of the blank document and drew a box around them.

What is the truth?

She looked at the question for a long time.

Then she got up. Made more coffee. Came back to the desk.

She wasn't going to get the answer tonight. She was going to wait for Maya, and she was going to be patient, and she was going to keep doing her job in this building while she waited. She was going to have breakfast across from Rowan Vale and not let anything she had just learned show on her face, because she was a forensic accountant and she had been trained to hold information calmly until the picture was complete.

She could do that. She had been doing it her whole life.

She looked at the question in its box.

What is the truth?

Whatever it was, she was going to find it. Even if it destroyed everything, she had been certain of.

Especially then.
