Chapter 4

He didn't say my name.

That was the first thing I noticed when his hand closed around my elbow and pulled me sideways through a doorway I hadn't seen. Not 'Autumn.' Not 'What happened.' Just pressure, firm and impersonal, steering me out of the light.

The alcove was small. Marble walls. A single sconce throwing shadows. Quiet. The kind of quiet that costs money.

Adonis let go of my arm and stepped back. He looked at me the way you'd look at a stain on expensive upholstery. His suit was charcoal gray, perfectly cut. His hair had gone silver at the temples. He looked like the kind of man who belonged in rooms like the one we'd just left.

I looked like I'd crawled out of the ocean.

"What are you doing here?" His voice was low. Controlled. Not angry. Worse than angry.

"I needed to see you," I said. My own voice sounded thin. "I paid it. All of it. Seven years. I have proof. The vase — Adonis, the vase was fake. You knew it was fake. I found the receipt. One hundred and eighty-seven dollars. I can show you —"

"Stop."

I stopped.

He closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them, they were flat. "Do you know what tonight is?"

"Your birthday."

"Do you know who is out there?"

I didn't answer.

"The governor," he said. "Two senators. The head of the Seattle Symphony. The Nordstrom family. People I have spent years building relationships with. Years." He took a breath through his nose. "And you walk in here looking like — Christ, Autumn, what are you wearing?"

I looked down. Navy shirt. Dark jeans. Boots I'd scrubbed in a motel sink.

"I'm sick," I said. "I have an infection. From the last dive. I need treatment and I don't have the money. I thought — I thought if I showed you the proof, if you saw what I found, you'd —"

"You'd what?" He wasn't yelling. That would have been better. This was colder. "You thought I'd do what, exactly? Write you another check? Introduce you to my guests? Tell them this is my wife, the woman who hauls corpses out of rivers for a living?"

The word hit different when he said it. Corpses. Like something rotting.

"I did it for us," I whispered. "For Kye. To pay the debt. You said —"

"I said a lot of things seven years ago." He straightened his cuffs. A small gesture. Precise. "Things change. People change. I built something here. An empire. A reputation. A life. And you —" He looked at me again, and this time I saw it clearly. Not anger. Not even contempt. Embarrassment. "You are bad luck, Autumn. You always have been. Everything you touch turns into a problem I have to solve."

I felt the fever spike behind my eyes. The room tilted slightly left.

"Kye is my son," I said.

"Kye has a mother." Flat. Final. "Her name is Laylani. She's been there for him. She shows up. She doesn't smell like death."

Something very small broke inside me. Not loud. Just a crack, like ice under weight.

Adonis reached into his jacket. He pulled out a check, already written, folded once. He held it between two fingers.

"Ten thousand dollars," he said. "Take it. Get your treatment. Get whatever you need. And then disappear. Don't come back here. Don't call. Don't contact Kye. You signed papers when you left. I had my lawyer draw them up. You agreed to the terms."

"I agreed to pay a debt," I said. My voice cracked. "A debt that didn't exist."

"Details." He dropped the check. It fluttered down between us and landed on the marble at my feet. "Take it and go."

I looked at the check. Then at him. His face was smooth. Untroubled. He'd already moved on. In his mind, I was already gone.

I bent down slowly. My knees cracked. The glass in my palm pressed deeper. I picked up the check with both hands, and they were shaking so hard the paper rattled.

I looked at him one more time.

He was already turning toward the door.

I walked.

Back through the ballroom. The crowd parted again, wider this time, faces turning away. I heard the quartet start up again behind me. Something bright and fast. Celebratory.

Outside, the rain had started again. Cold and clean. It soaked through my shirt in seconds.

I stood on the circular drive under the fountain and looked at the check in my hands. The ink was running slightly. Ten thousand dollars. For seven years.

I folded it once. Twice. I put it in my pocket.

Then I took out my phone, scrolled to a number I hadn't called in over a decade, and pressed dial.

It rang once.

"Autumn?" My father's voice. Awake. Immediate. Like he'd been waiting.

I closed my eyes.

"Dad," I said. "I need to come home."
