Chapter 2

He wasn't talking to me.

I turned toward the voice, and there he was. Kye. My son. Twelve years old now, taller than I remembered, his shoulders already broadening into the man he would become. He stood at the top of the staircase, one hand gripping the banister, his face a mask of confusion that shifted into something else when he saw me.

Recognition didn't come. Not the way I had dreamed it would. His eyes moved over my face like he was cataloging features on a stranger, then dropped to my clothes—the worn jacket, the salt-bleached jeans, the hands that looked like they belonged to someone else.

"Kye," I whispered. My voice sounded foreign in the marble foyer. "It's me. It's Mom."

He flinched. Actually flinched. His body pulled back from the railing as if I'd reached for him.

"You're not my mom," he said. His voice was sharp, defensive. "You're the corpse lady. The one who hauls bodies out of the water. Dad told me about you. You're just some woman who abandoned us."

The words hit me like ice water. Not because they were cruel—children say cruel things. But because they sounded rehearsed. The way he said 'corpse lady' had the practiced cadence of a phrase repeated until it became natural. Someone had taught him to say it. Someone had taught my son to look at me like I was something contaminated.

I took a step toward him. "Kye, please. I can explain. I was paying—"

"Mom!" he shouted, cutting me off. Not to me. Over my shoulder.

I turned.

She appeared at the top of the stairs like a photograph stepping out of its frame. Tall, elegant, dressed in a cream cashmere sweater that probably cost more than I made in a month. Her hair was dark and glossy, falling in perfect waves around her shoulders. She moved with the easy confidence of someone who belonged in every corner of this house.

But it was her wrist that made my breath catch. The Walker family bracelet—Diana's bracelet, the one Adonis's mother had clasped around my wrist on our wedding day with tears in her eyes—gleamed against her skin. She wore it like it had always been hers.

"Laylani," Kye called, relief flooding his voice. He bounded down the stairs past me without a glance, as if I were a piece of furniture in his way. He stopped at the bottom and looked up at her. "There's someone weird here. She says she's my mom."

Laylani's eyes met mine. For just a second, I saw something flicker there—satisfaction, maybe. Or triumph. Then it was gone, replaced by a mask of concerned sympathy so perfect it looked genuine.

"Oh my goodness," she said, descending the stairs with measured grace. "You must be Autumn. We've heard so much about you. Are you alright? You look... unwell. Let me get you some water. You should call ahead next time. Adonis is very particular about unexpected visitors."

I stared at the bracelet. At the way Kye leaned against her leg like she was his anchor. At the practiced ease with which she'd claimed my home, my son, my life.

I said nothing.

The motel room smelled like cigarettes and disinfectant. I lay on the bed, still wearing my clothes, staring at the ceiling as it swam in and out of focus. The fever had spiked again—103°F, according to the thermometer I'd bought at a gas station. My body felt like it was being slowly consumed from the inside.

I thought about what I had:

- No money.

- A dying body.

- A son who looked at me like I was contaminated.

- Documented proof that my husband had manufactured seven years of my suffering.

I thought about what I didn't have:

- A home.

- A family.

- A future.

I reached for my phone. My father's number was still in there, saved from before I left. Richard Parker. One call, and I could be back in New York within hours. Back in the world I'd walked away from. Back where I belonged.

My thumb hovered over his name.

Pride stopped me. Not the good kind of pride—the stupid kind. The kind that had kept me diving into freezing water for seven years to pay a debt that never existed. The kind that told me I couldn't go back, couldn't admit I'd been wrong, couldn't ask for help.

Instead, I scrolled to Adonis's number and pressed call.

The phone rang once. Twice.

A woman's voice answered. "Adonis Walker's phone. This is Laylani. How can I help you?"

I closed my eyes. "I need to speak with my husband. It's urgent. It's about the money. All of it. I paid it. I have proof. I need to see him."

There was a pause. Then Laylani's voice, warm with performed concern: "Oh, Autumn. Adonis is so busy right now preparing for his birthday gala—it's the social event of the season in Seattle. But I know he would absolutely want to help you. Why don't you come to the event? It's this Saturday at the estate. Come as you are. Everyone will understand. He'll be so glad to see you."

The line went dead.

I stared at the phone. Then I looked at my reflection in the dark screen. I barely recognized myself.

Somewhere in Seattle, Laylani Burke was probably smiling.
