Chapter 2

A pale, argent moon presided over the treetops, spilling quicksilver light across the Obsidian Fang compound and painting every rooftop with spectral frost. At the break of day, Will had swung into the saddle of his jet‑black stallion, claiming he must settle urgent affairs with a neighboring chieftain.

He pressed a deceptively gentle kiss to my brow.

“Won’t be away long, little star,” he murmured, his tone velvet‑soft.

“I’ll miss you,” I answered—voice steady, even as revulsion curled in my gut.

“Keep safe until I return,” I added, forcing lips to curve.

The moment his silhouette dissolved among the firs, I shed the act and moved. For several cycles I had charted every habit he possessed—the routes he preferred, the documents he hoarded, the chambers he trusted no one else to enter. Will, sovereign Alpha of this territory, believed himself untouchable. Tonight I intended to carve fissures into that certainty.

Barefoot to soften each step, I slipped through opulent corridors. My heightened senses sifted for danger; none stirred. His study yielded after a protesting creak of hinges. Cedar smoke and vellum greeted me, shelves groaning beneath ancestral lore and relics scavenged from extinct clans—but I sought proof, not antiquities.

At the far end loomed a monumental portrait of the pack’s founding Alpha, eyes like obsidian jewels. The surrounding air prickled—unnaturally chilled. I eased the canvas aside. A steel strongbox lay set into the masonry.

One long breath. Then I keyed in the only date Will ever let slip with unfettered fondness: Minnie’s birthday. The mechanism thunked open as though eager to betray its master.

Files—neat ranks of parchment, ribbon, and seal—gleamed in moonlit shafts. My claws twitched, desire to rend them nearly overwhelming. Instead I sifted carefully.

Here were sworn covenants from the Elders, notarizing a life‑for‑life enchantment—the very working that drained my mother’s heart, quite literally, under the pretext of a rogue strike. Tears pricked, yet rage quenched them. Deeper still, scrolls bound in black silk revealed ledgers of Will’s “investments”: enchanted diadems, charm‑woven gowns, a dagger bespelled to ward fatal blows—all couriered to Minnie. In contrast lay another bundle marked with my name: trifling baubles he paraded as grand tokens. Insult disguised as affection.

Knees met the frigid stone, betrayal slamming into me like iron. Luna only in title, I had served as placeholder and political shield. Sorrow hardened into tempered steel.

From my pouch I produced a thumb‑sized crystal recorder, glimmering with spell‑light. I drifted it across every page; its core soaked up the damning text, rune by rune. Then my fingers closed on a leather folio labeled Future Bonds. The content curdled my blood: negotiations with the Elder Council for a blood pact ensuring Will’s dynasty—Minnie anointed true Luna, my existence rendered temporary until signatures dried.

I snapped the folio shut and stowed it under my cloak. After resetting the safe, the portrait slid back; the room looked virginal once more.

Mission complete, I shifted. Silver fur rippled along my frame; blue eyes glinted with purpose. I bolted into night‑slick woods, paws drumming mossy earth. Destination: the hollow of Ronan, oldest warlock alive and Will’s legal confidant—the one mage whose word the council would heed.

At the perimeter of his gargantuan tree‑house I resumed human form, tugging my cloak tight. Twisted roots clawed upward like skeletal hands; lambent azure witch‑lights bobbed among them. I rapped twice.

“Late,” grumbled the ancient as the door yawed. A beard white as snow swept his belt; amber pupils bored through me.

“Obstacles,” I replied, brushing past into a chamber littered with ink‑blotted charts and brittle maps.

“Ronan,” he offered, seating himself. “You know my terms?”

“Erase me,” I said without tremor. “Mask my scent. Will must never trace me.”

A single brow rose. “Such work is steep.”

I hefted the satchel, spilling its incriminating cache upon his oak desk. “These are worth fortunes—and heads. Evidence condemning the future Alpha.”

His eyes glittered like molten coin. “You’ve enraged an apex predator.”

No answer left my lips. He skimmed pages, whistled low, then snapped the bag shut.

“We stage a fatal ambush,” he decided. “Scorch marks, shredded flesh, bones too pulverized for recognition. Your scent—purged with abyssal salt and moon‑water. No wolf alive will follow the trail.”

I nodded, hollow heaviness nesting beneath my ribs. A counterfeit corpse meant no burial stone etched with my name, no mourning rites, only ash scattered to gull the pack. Freedom, was it? The notion tasted like flight from battle rather than victory. Yet necessity shackled me—especially with the fragile spark fluttering beneath my skin.

Palm resting atop my abdomen, I sensed a shy heartbeat thrumming. For you, I vowed inside the hush. We will endure. We will rise again.
