Chapter 2

The world became a swirl of distorted color and sound.

Sophie’s smug expression glinted like a dagger. Damien’s unreadable gaze was as cold as ever. And my parents? Their silence screamed louder than any words ever could.

But it was Luca—my sweet, innocent boy—whose cheerful smile nearly broke me. He had no idea the life he knew was crumbling around him.

Before the dam of rage and pain could burst, I pivoted sharply, clutching Luca’s small hand like a lifeline in stormy waters.

“Isabelle.” Damien’s voice cut through the tension, flat and unconcerned. “Where do you think you’re going?”

I didn’t look back. My feet carried me forward, unsteady but determined, as Luca’s warm grip tightened in mine. He glanced over his shoulder more than once, unsure of why we were leaving so suddenly.

Then came Sophie’s voice, syrupy and cruel beneath a coating of false sympathy.

“She’ll come around. She always does.”

But she was wrong.

There would be no coming around this time.

There would be no forgiveness. Not for her. Not for him. Not for any of them.

---

Back at the Navarro estate, an eerie stillness welcomed us. It felt like walking into a crypt. Luca, worn out from the day’s festivities, fell asleep minutes after we arrived—unaware that the celebration had ended in betrayal.

I sat on the edge of his bed, brushing his curls away from his forehead and kissing his temple. He looked so peaceful, so unaware.

He still thought his father was a superhero.

If only I could preserve that illusion for him a little longer.

Once I was sure he was deep in sleep, I stepped out, shutting his door quietly before collapsing onto my bed.

And then I broke.

Sobs ripped through me, shaking my entire body until I felt hollow.

Damien Navarro—my husband, my son's father, the man who once swore I was his world.

And Sophie. My baby sister. My closest confidante.

The two people I should have been able to trust the most.

I squeezed my eyes shut, hoping to hold off the memories. But they came anyway—sharp, vivid, merciless.

Damien had pursued me like a man on a mission. Confident. Relentless. Charismatic. The kind of man used to getting everything he wanted.

When I was sent to Paris for business with the Soriano syndicate, Damien had shown up without warning. A spontaneous flight, a hotel lobby filled with tulips, and a grin that made me forget every reason to stay guarded.

“I couldn’t bear to be apart from you for even a few days,” he’d said.

I called him insane.

He’d just laughed and pulled me close.

“Maybe. But I’m crazy about you.”

That was the man I married.

Charming. Intense. Mine.

We tied the knot in a whirlwind of passion and promise.

Our honeymoon? A month in Sydney. Sunsets over the harbor, lavish dinners, long walks, whispered dreams beneath city lights.

He told me I was his forever.

When Luca was born, Damien became even more attentive. I didn’t have to lift a finger. He’d cradle our baby in one arm and wrap the other around me every night.

“I love you more than life itself,” he’d whisper.

I believed every word.

Then Sophie came back.

After years studying fashion in Milan, she returned home glowing—refined, magnetic, the kind of beautiful that turned heads effortlessly.

I noticed the change.

The glances she exchanged with Damien. Her laughter, too loud at his jokes. The way Damien suddenly lingered in rooms she occupied.

But I told myself it was harmless.

Sophie was blood.

Damien was my husband.

Until one night, everything fell apart.

I came upstairs looking for Damien and opened our bedroom door—only to find him in bed with her.

I stopped breathing.

“Damien?” The word fell from my mouth, weak and broken.

Sophie sprang upright, fumbling for the blanket. Damien didn’t even look ashamed.

“She fainted,” he said with a sigh, rubbing his forehead. “I was making sure she was okay. Don’t be ridiculous, Isabelle.”

And like a complete fool, I believed it.

Because Luca was in the room.

Because I couldn’t face the truth.

Because I didn’t want to face it.

But now?

Now there was no denying what they had done. For how long? I didn’t even want to know.

I dragged in a shaky breath, my head spinning. The part that hurt the most?

Even now, some part of me still loved him.

My pathetic, aching heart still reached for the man who had ripped it apart.

I wanted to destroy something.

Break glass.

Scream into the night.

And then my phone rang.

Mom.

My fingers hovered over the screen. I should’ve ignored it.

But some desperate, leftover piece of me still hoped she might be calling to comfort me.

To say she was sorry.

I answered. “Hello?”

Her voice was composed, utterly devoid of remorse.

“Oh, for heaven’s sake, are you still crying? Isabelle, please. Don’t be so dramatic.”

Tears stung the corners of my eyes. “What…?”

“Sophie’s younger,” she said, as if that excused everything. “She deserves happiness too.”

My voice cracked. “And I don’t?”

There was a pause. Then I heard my father in the background.

“Isabelle,” he said, his tone cold and final, “stop thinking about yourself for once. You need to think about your son. Damien’s marrying Sophie now. Best you stop resisting and try to get along.”

I froze.

That was it.

The final betrayal.

I hurled the phone across the room. It slammed against the wall with a crack before thudding to the carpet.

I collapsed into the mattress and screamed into my pillow until I couldn’t breathe.

This wasn’t just Damien turning his back on me.

It was all of them.

My mother. My father. My sister. My husband.

They had all thrown me away like discarded furniture. Like I was a burden. Like I didn’t matter.

But if they thought I was just going to roll over and accept it?

If they thought I would nod and smile and “cooperate”?

They had no idea who they were dealing with.

They didn’t just break my heart.

They awoke something far more dangerous.

And I would never—ever—be that naive again.
