Chapter 4

The HR Manager photo was crystal clear: a set of spare keys sitting dead center on my desk, pinned beneath a pink sticky note that read, "Thanks, Hailey! So glad you agreed to cover my shift. You're the best!"

The image detonated in the group chat.

Every coworker who'd been lurking in silence suddenly found their outlet.

Dennis was the first to surface.

"Boss, what Hope posted is real!"

"Yesterday before clocking out, I saw Hope at Hailey's desk handing everything over to her, with my own eyes."

"The note and the keys were right there on Hailey's desk. She took the keys and just didn't show up on purpose!"

"That is beyond unprofessional!" The HR manager jumped in next. "I always thought Hailey was standoffish and antisocial, but I never imagined she'd screw the whole team over when it actually mattered!"

Everyone was terrified of getting docked, so they turned on me instantly.

Watching the tide in the chat reverse in seconds, Hope finally exhaled on the other side of her screen. A trace of color crept back into her face.

She struck while the iron was hot, typing out a long message in the group chat:

"Boss, everyone, please don't be too hard on Hailey."

"I don't think she deliberately wanted to see the company flooded. She probably just overslept."

"Even though she didn't bring the keys and it caused such a huge loss, I'm heartbroken too."

"If the company is struggling to get through this, I'm willing to chip in six hundred dollars from next month's paycheck to help cover some of it..."

Six hundred dollars. Against eighty thousand in damages. The contrast made me look like a monster.

Mr. Greyson stared at my name in the chat, tagged over and over, with zero response. Whatever shred of composure he had left shattered.

He issued his ultimatum:

"Hailey Chavez abandoned her post without authorization, resulting in $80,000 in company losses!"

"Finance is to freeze every payroll account and bonus under her name, effective immediately."

"I don't care if I have to lose the shirt off my back. I'm filing a police report and pressing charges!"

Six o'clock that evening.

Mr. Greyson called back every employee in the area who'd been off for the holiday. An emergency accountability meeting.

The main hall had been cleared out into an open space. Dozens of people crammed into the wrecked room, nobody daring to breathe too loud.

The projector screen on the wall flickered to life. Hope appeared on the video call, filling the display.

She'd blurred her hotel background, changed into a wrinkled gray-brown t-shirt, and deliberately mussed her hair into something that looked like exhaustion.

BANG.

Mr. Greyson slammed the damage assessment report onto the table so hard the surface shook.

"Eighty thousand, seven hundred and thirty dollars!"

His eyes were a roadmap of burst capillaries. Each word ground out from between clenched teeth.

"That is what Hailey Chavez cost this company. No-show. Kept the keys to herself."

"Firing her would be letting her off easy. She's paying back every last cent!"

On the big screen, Hope's eyes reddened on cue. She pressed a hand to her mouth and let out a fragile, trembling sob.

"Mr. Greyson... Hailey's had a hard time in the workplace too."

Hope dabbed at fake tears, her voice catching. "Even if she hid the keys and didn't come in, please don't call the police on her!"

"She's still a young woman. If she gets arrested and ends up with a record, what job would ever hire her again? Her whole life would be ruined..."

Every word, every syllable, landed like a lash on Mr. Greyson's already raw nerves.

"Don't call the police? She brought this on herself!"

The muscles in his face twitched. "She destroyed half my life's work! I'm putting her behind bars today!"

Dennis pumped his fist in the air. "Hope, you're just too kind! Why waste your sympathy on someone like that? Call the cops right now. Show up at her door with handcuffs!"

The coworkers around him nodded along, a chorus of agreement and curses filling the room.

Inside that cramped, run-down conference room, the wave of accusations against me crested to its peak.

Mr. Greyson had made up his mind.

He sucked in a sharp breath and roared, "Everybody shut the hell up!"

The room went dead silent.

Mr. Greyson snatched up his phone, his thumb slamming down on three digits: 9-1-1.

He deliberately switched it to speakerphone and set the phone in the exact center of the table.

On the video call, Hope leaned forward, her eyes blazing with barely contained glee.

Dennis clenched his fists. Every person in the company held their breath.

The call connected.

"911, what's your emergency?"

The dispatcher's voice had barely filled the room when—

BANG.

The office door flew open, kicked in from the outside.

Every head in the room whipped around.

The evening sun stretched my shadow long across the floor.

I swept my gaze over Hope on the big screen, then let it settle on Mr. Greyson's frozen face, phone still clutched in his hand.

A thin, mocking smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

"Mr. Greyson. I hear you're calling the cops on me?"
