Chapter 1

On New Year's Day, during the wedding reception for Caroline Henson's best friend—her third marriage, to be precise—I overheard a conversation that shattered my reality.

"Caroline, honestly, women are meant to trade up in life," her friend said, voice dripping with condescension. "Why are you still wasting your youth on a dead-end like Harrison Gilbert?"

"Look at me," the friend continued, gesturing to her lavish surroundings. "Last time, I married a wealthy bachelor. This time? I snagged a second-generation heir from the Manhattan elite. And the best part? He's younger than me."

Caroline fell silent. She didn't offer a single word in my defense.

That night, the betrayal deepened.

Her phone screen lit up on the nightstand, revealing a search history that turned my blood to ice. She wasn't just consulting a divorce lawyer; she was messaging her friend, asking for introductions to wealthy suitors.

A chill settled in my marrow, colder than the winter wind rattling the windowpanes.

So that's it, I thought, staring at her sleeping form.

Caroline Henson. Since you firmly believe marriage is nothing more than a ladder to climb, I won't stand in your way.

——

The final blow came during the holiday dinner at my in-laws' house.

Gifts were exchanged, pleasantries offered. Then, right in the middle of the meal, Caroline placed a document on the table.

"Harrison, let's divorce."

Her face was a mask of calm. Her tone held no ripple of emotion, no hesitation. She had clearly made up her mind long before this moment.

The room went deathly silent.

Every member of the Henson family froze, forks hovering halfway to their mouths. To them, Caroline and I were the model couple, the gold standard for the younger generation. In five years of marriage, we had never quarreled in public.

No one expected us to implode over dinner.

"Caroline!" my mother-in-law shrieked, dropping her chopsticks. "Why are you divorcing for no reason?"

She didn't wait for an answer. She immediately turned her glare on me. "It's because Harrison bullied you, isn't it? That man did something, didn't he?"

She clutched Caroline's hand protectively, then barked at me. "Harrison Gilbert! What are you standing there for? Bow your head and admit your mistake! Do I really need to teach a grown man how to beg?"

My father-in-law slammed his hand on the table. "No one knows a daughter better than her father. For Caroline to demand a divorce, you must have committed an unforgivable sin." He pointed a shaking finger at my nose. "If you don't give us an explanation today, don't even think about walking out that door!"

The relatives quickly fell in line.

"Harrison, you're sick," a cousin sneered. "My cousin is so gentle and sensible. What could you possibly be dissatisfied with?"

"People used to say you were a 'warm man,' emotionally stable," another relative scoffed. "In my view, you're a ticking time bomb."

"A hypocrite. I bet he commits domestic violence."

Their gazes were heavy with contempt, their words sharp enough to draw blood.

I stood there, listening to their accusations, fighting the urge to laugh. The irony was suffocating.

On the surface, Caroline appeared gentle and sensible. But behind closed doors? She was the powder keg. Her emotions were as volatile as a summer storm.

When she was in a good mood, she was passionate. But when the mood shifted, it was a nightmare. If she woke up with insomnia, she ensured I suffered too—biting my arm, shaking me, doing whatever it took to keep me from sleeping. Once, when I couldn't find the specific gourmet cake she craved, she threw a tantrum that lasted hours and locked me out of the bedroom.

Every time, she would eventually offer a quiet "sorry," and I would forgive her.

I loved her. Because of that love, I yielded. I swallowed my pride. I molded her into the image of a good wife, smoothing over her rough edges with my own patience.

I never expected that five years of devotion would lose to a single sentence of provocation from her shallow best friend.

I took a deep breath.

"We don't have a conflict," I said, my voice steady and devoid of the apology they demanded. "She simply thinks I'm no longer worthy of her."

The accusations died in their throats. The room fell silent as everyone turned to Caroline, waiting for her denial.

"That's right."

She didn't flinch. Her chin lifted in defiance. "My best friend is right. Women should marry up. We should always look for something better."

She scanned the shocked faces of her family. "Her first husband was a baker. A nobody. Her second was a wealthy bachelor. She alternated diamond necklaces like they were costume jewelry. And now? Her third husband is a Manhattan elite, heir to a fortune, and five years younger than her."

Caroline's eyes gleamed with terrifying confidence. "If she can do it, I definitely can too."

Silence stretched, heavy and awkward. Her family looked stunned, unable to reconcile their "sensible" daughter with this materialistic stranger.

A bitter smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

Perhaps, from the very beginning, Caroline never actually respected me. She only craved my utility, my service, and my silence. Now that she believed a better option existed, I was nothing more than an obstacle to be discarded.
