Chapter 5

That night, while the mansion slept under a blanket of silence, I found myself alone in the kitchen, a lone candle flickering on the counter. I’d baked a simple vanilla cake—soft and unadorned, the kind I once imagined preparing for my child’s first birthday. The air was heavy with the sweetness of sugar and sorrow. No balloons, no laughter—only me, the wavering light, and the echo of a future that would never come to life.

“Happy birthday, my little one,” I whispered, voice trembling. “I’m sorry you never got the chance to see the world.”

A tear rolled down my cheek as I placed a tiny white flower beside the plate. A breeze drifted in through the window, brushing past the flame. It flickered gently—like a whisper. Like a farewell.

I was smoothing the icing when I heard it: the sharp rhythm of heels against the marble floor. Camille.

“You really are pathetic,” she said, her tone coated in mock sweetness. “Still here, acting like you belong. You don’t.”

I didn’t look up. “Relax, Camille. I’m leaving soon.”

“Good.” Her smirk widened. “Because our baby will be here soon. And I wouldn’t want my child growing up near a jealous woman who lost hers.”

My hand stilled on the spatula.

She leaned close, her perfume suffocating. “Want me to speed things up? I’ll pay you. Just vanish. No one will miss you.”

I turned, meeting her eyes head-on. “Keep your money. And keep him. I don’t need either of you.”

Her smile faltered for the briefest second. “You can keep pretending you’re still Mrs. Smith,” I added softly. “But I’m done pretending.”

Then I walked away, leaving the half-frosted cake behind. I wouldn’t let her poison another memory.

Later that night, after lighting the candle again and whispering a prayer only a mother could understand, I returned to my room—only for Richard to burst in, rage burning in his eyes.

“What the hell did you do to my suit?!” he shouted, thrusting a garment bag toward me. Inside was his navy blue suit—the one for the merger, the anniversary. A faint stain bloomed near the lapel.

“I didn’t—”

“This is all you’re good for!” he barked. “Fix it before morning, or you’ll regret it.”

The door slammed. The house trembled.

I looked at the fabric and knew immediately—Camille had done it. A final, silent jab.

But I didn’t cry.

Instead, I spent the next hours bent over the sink, scrubbing until my fingers ached. Not for him. For me. My last act in this place that had stolen everything from me.

When the stain was finally gone, I turned to hang the suit—only to find Camille standing at the doorway in silk, a smirk playing on her lips.

“Oh,” she said lightly. “Didn’t you hear? He’s wearing the custom suit I made. That one’s useless now.”

Richard appeared behind her and snatched the cleaned suit from my hands. Without even a glance, he tossed it into the trash.

Camille pressed closer to him, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “Some things just don’t belong anymore.”

But I felt nothing.

Because by sunrise, I’d be gone.

The next morning, they left early—off to their grand celebration. Their anniversary. Their merger. Their perfect lie.

The house was quiet. Peaceful. Mine, for a few final moments.

I packed light. One dress. Some cash. A single pair of heels. Freedom didn’t need luggage.

At exactly ten o’clock, a sleek black car pulled up.

Drake stepped out, calm and steady, just as I remembered. Older now. Stronger. The man I once turned away because I thought love meant sacrifice.

He smiled softly. “Are you ready?”

“More than ever.”

We drove to the airport in silence, the clouds darkening outside but the weight in my chest finally lifting.

Then my phone buzzed.

Mom: Where are you? Don’t you dare miss today. You’re expected. Disappoint me, and Camille gets everything.

I ignored it.

Then Richard: Bring Camille’s necklace. She left it. Stop wasting time.

Another. Serena, answer me.

Then his tone turned sharp, desperate. It’s our anniversary. Where are you? You’re humiliating me. You should be here for the merger.

Finally: COME BACK. I MEAN IT.

I stared at the screen. Then typed slowly:

Happy anniversary. You’ll receive my gift shortly.

As the plane began boarding, I pressed send.

Somewhere amid the glitter and chatter of that grand event, Richard would receive the envelope I had sent—containing my wedding ring and the finalized divorce papers.

Before he could even react, I cut off all contact.

As the plane soared through the clouds, I shut my eyes. For the first time in so long, I wasn’t breaking apart—I was finally free.
