Chapter 1

Today was supposed to be the day I married Julian Ashford.

In front of every important name in the city, he held my hands and promised to love me for the rest of his life.

Then it was his turn to say "I do," and a five-year-old boy ran into the chapel, crying for his daddy.

The woman behind the boy told every guest in the room that Julian had a son he never knew.

...

Ten minutes earlier, I was happy.

White roses lined every pew. Their scent was thick and sweet, almost dizzying. Julian's thumb kept brushing the back of my knuckles, the way it always did when he was nervous.

"You're shaking," I whispered.

"I'm about to marry Claire Donovan," he whispered back. "I'm allowed to shake."

The pastor cleared his throat and smiled at me. "Claire, do you take Julian to be your lawfully wedded husband, to love and to cherish, from this day forward?"

I didn't even let him finish.

"I do."

A soft laugh rolled through the guests. Julian's mouth curved, and for one second, he looked at me like I was the only person in the room.

The pastor turned. "And Julian, do you take Claire to be your lawfully wedded—"

Julian opened his mouth.

The chapel doors slammed open.

Every head turned. Cold air rushed down the aisle and pushed at the hem of my dress.

A woman stood in the doorway in a pale blue coat, holding the hand of a little boy. Her dark hair was messy, like she'd run all the way here. Her eyes were already wet.

I knew that face. I'd seen it in old photos Julian swore he'd thrown away.

Vanessa Cole.

"Julian," she said. Just his name. Her voice cracked right down the middle.

The little boy pulled free of her hand. He ran halfway down the aisle, then stopped and held up something small and square.

A photograph.

It was Julian. Younger, maybe twenty-three, grinning on a beach with sunburned shoulders.

"Daddy!" the boy sobbed. "Daddy, it's me! I'm Milo!"

The whole chapel went silent.

Julian's fingers twitched against mine.

"Julian," I said quietly. "Look at me."

He didn't.

His hand slid out of mine. Just like that. My palm was suddenly empty and cold.

He walked down the altar steps, fast, his jaw set hard.

"Vanessa." His voice came out low and sharp. "What the hell are you doing here?"

She pressed a hand to her chest. "I just wanted him to meet his father. That's all. I swear, I didn't know it was today."

Then she raised her voice. Loud. Loud enough for the back row. Loud enough for the photographers by the side door.

"He's your son, Julian! Milo is your son!"

Gasps broke across the room like glass. Somebody near the front dropped a program. Phones came up, one after another, little black screens pointed straight at us.

I didn't move. I couldn't make my feet work.

Julian stared at the boy.

Then he crouched down slowly, until he was eye level with Milo.

I saw it too. I hated that I saw it. The same straight nose. The same dark brows that pulled together when he was confused. The same small dent in his chin.

The Ashford face.

"Hey, buddy," Julian said. His voice had gone soft. "How old are you?"

Milo sniffed and held up one hand, fingers spread. "Five. And a half."

"When's your birthday?"

"March tenth."

Julian went very still.

I watched him count. I watched his lips move, almost too small to see. March. Five and a half years ago. The last year he was with her.

His shoulders dropped, just an inch.

"Julian." My voice rang out sharper than I meant it to. "Come back up here."

He didn't turn around.

"We can deal with this after," I said. "Right now, you come back up here and you finish this. Please."

The silence stretched. Five seconds. Ten. Every one of them landed on my chest like a stone.

Finally, he stood. He looked at me over his shoulder, and his face was a stranger's face.

"Claire, I need to figure this out first."

I laughed.

I didn't mean to. It just came out of me, short and strange, and it echoed in that huge white room. A few guests flinched.

"Figure it out," I repeated. "In the middle of our vows."

"He might be my kid."

"And I'm supposed to be your wife."

Before he could answer, Milo threw himself against Julian's legs and wrapped both arms tight around his knees.

"Don't go away again," the boy cried into his suit pants. "Mommy said you'd come back. She promised."

Vanessa covered her mouth. Tears ran down her cheeks in neat, perfect lines.

"He's had a fever all night," she said, her voice trembling. "A hundred and two. I told him we'd wait, but he wouldn't stop asking for you. He kept saying, 'I want my daddy.' What was I supposed to do, Julian? Tell him no?"

Julian's hand settled on top of Milo's head.

That small gesture hurt worse than anything else that day.

"Hey!" A man's voice boomed from the second row. Julian's father, Richard, was already on his feet, red-faced. "Put those cameras away! Now!"

Julian's mother, Eleanor, rushed toward the side door, her hands up, blocking lenses. "This is a private ceremony! Get out! All of you, out!"

"Mr. Ashford! Is the child yours?"

"Julian, did you know about the boy?"

"Miss Donovan, is the wedding off?"

The questions crashed over each other. Flashes went off in white bursts. Someone shoved past the roses, and petals scattered across the aisle like torn paper.

In the middle of all of it, Vanessa touched Julian's sleeve.

"He's burning up," she whispered, just for him. But I heard it. "Please. Just come with us. Just for an hour."

Julian looked down at Milo. Then up at me.

I held his gaze. I didn't beg this time. I just waited.

He bent and lifted Milo into his arms.

"I'll call you," he said.

Then he turned his back on the altar and walked down the aisle with Vanessa at his side. The boy's small arms were wrapped around his neck. Vanessa's hand rested on his back.

They looked like a family.

The doors swung shut behind them.

The noise kept going, but it sounded far away now, like it was happening underwater. My bridesmaid, Tessa, was saying my name. Someone was crying. Eleanor was shouting at a man with a camera.

I stood alone at the altar.

The pastor shifted beside me, his book still open. "Miss Donovan, I'm so sorry. Would you like to sit down?"

"No."

I looked at my left hand. The engagement ring Julian had slipped onto my finger months ago caught the light. Beautiful. Heavy. Unfinished.

His ring was still sitting on the little velvet pillow. I never got to put it on him.

My phone buzzed inside Tessa's clutch. Once. Twice. Then again and again, like it would never stop.

"Claire," Tessa said carefully, glancing at the screen. "It's already online. Everywhere."

I nodded slowly.

Then I gripped the ring and pulled.

It stuck at my knuckle. I twisted it, hard, until it scraped free and left a red line on my skin.

I set it down on the velvet pillow, right next to his.
