Chapter 3

Aurora sank gracefully into the chair next to Damian, draping her arm around his as if she owned him.

When her gaze landed on me, her lips curved into a teasing pout.

“Mr. Alonzo is overreacting again,” she said, leaning closer. “It’s just a mild cold, and yet he forbade me from working or even touching a drink. I practically had to beg him to let me come tonight.”

Damian chuckled, reaching out to tap her nose with mock reprimand.

“If I didn’t watch you, you’d skip your medicine and then whine that a sniffle was killing you.”

They looked like a scene from some romantic drama—soft whispers, gentle laughter, tender touches.

I watched silently. There was something foreign in the way Damian looked at her—care, amusement, warmth. All the things he had never shown me, not even when we stood at the altar.

I pressed the divorce papers deeper into my coat pocket. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel heartbreak. I felt… relief.

At the upscale restaurant, Damian greeted the corporate partners with practiced charm, then gestured to the woman by his side.

“This is Aurora Blake—our Chief Operating Officer.” She beamed, adjusting the diamond necklace around her neck.

Then he looked at me. Polite, distant. “And this is Cassandra. She’s… Aurora’s personal assistant.”

Assistant. The word echoed louder than it should have.

One of the senior partners raised an eyebrow, recognition flickering.

“Ah, yes. I remember her. She served time, didn’t she? Something about a car accident… a death? Mr. Alonzo is remarkably loyal to keep her employed.”

Damian paused beside Aurora, eyes flicking to me just enough to acknowledge the tension, then forced a bland smile. “Life can be complicated.”

Nate sat to my left, perfectly composed in his tailored navy suit, Vice President of Alonzo Holdings & Corporation. He laughed easily with Aurora, refilled her glass, pulled out her chair, handed her napkins—attentive, protective, affectionate. Like she was his mother.

Not once did he glance at me. Not once did he ask if I’d eaten.

“Honestly,” Nate said casually, “if Dad had married Aurora first, life would’ve been smoother. No drama, just grace and strategy.”

Aurora smiled, laying a delicate hand over his. “You’re such a good son,” she murmured.

“My daughter already calls her Mama Aurora,” Nate added, pride in his voice. “It feels right.”

I said nothing. He didn’t look at me. No guilt. No shame. I stayed silent.

During the meeting, Damian and Aurora’s shoulders brushed occasionally. He glanced at me a few times, silently expecting me to drink on Aurora’s behalf—so she could appear fragile and cared for in front of the investors. I stayed quiet.

At one point, Damian looked like he might stand. I rose first and excused myself to the restroom.

As I stepped out of a stall, Aurora was at the sink, arms folded, a smug smile playing on her lips.

“You know,” she said, watching me through the mirror, “if I were you, I wouldn’t have shown up tonight. It’s tragic—being pitied by your own husband in front of strangers.”

I calmly turned on the tap, washing my hands without meeting her gaze.

“That’s none of your concern, Ms. Blake.”

“Oh, but it is.” She stepped closer, eyes scanning me from head to toe. “Still wearing those same shoes? That blazer… isn’t that the one from your release day?”

I didn’t react.

She smiled cruelly. “I forgot. Damian probably spent his entire wardrobe budget on me. Custom Valentino. Limited edition. You wouldn’t recognize it if you tried.”

Her tone lowered, intimate and sharp.

“He tells me everything, Cassandra. Even how your son wishes I were his real mother. He said you were safer in prison… that it was the safest place for someone like you.”

Her words cut deeper than I expected. I wanted to strike her. To scream. But I stayed still, forcing myself to breathe evenly.

Then her voice softened, almost conspiratorial.

“Do you want to know the truth, Cassandra?”

I stayed silent. She leaned closer, reflection nearly touching mine.

“Nate was never your son. He was mine.”

My heart stuttered.

“W-what…?”

She smiled wider, eyes gleaming.

“You gave birth that night, yes—but he didn’t survive. Damian panicked. I was in the same ward with my baby that night. Nate is ours. Damian swapped them. Your son died. Mine lived. Nate is mine.”

She tilted her head, studying my reaction like a predator enjoying the hunt.

“I always planned to tell him someday… maybe now’s the right moment.”

A twisted laugh escaped her lips.

“Funny, isn’t it? You served ten years, thinking you were protecting your family. But it was never yours to protect.”

I stared at the mirror, at myself, barely breathing.

And in that instant, everything fell into place. The instinct I had buried deep inside. The way Nate never looked at me the same after he turned five. How his face lit up when Aurora appeared. How she’d show up at my home, arms overflowing with gifts, meals, toys, always acting generous—but never letting Nate go.

He clung to her. She claimed him every visit.

I remembered one afternoon vividly: she insisted on taking him to his school play when my shift ran late.

“Don’t worry, I’ll cheer enough for both of us,” she said.

She did. Even had a banner with his name.

When I arrived, out of breath, Nate was already in her arms.

I had brushed it off. Told myself it didn’t matter. That I was still his mother.

But now… her words fit together like a cruel puzzle. Betrayal, loss, a decade-long ache. I bit the inside of my cheek, refusing to cry. The metallic taste reminded me I was still alive. Still standing.

Aurora watched silently, expecting a reaction. I gave her none. I dried my hands, smoothed my coat, and walked past her as if she didn’t exist.
