Shattered Bonds: The Ruthless Heiress Returns

Arlena wakes in a hospital room one month before the apocalypse, her grandmother and uncle shoving a bone marrow donation consent form in her face. In her past life, she signed it, and the procedure wrecked her immune system just as extreme weather and societal collapse struck. While she lay weak, her family drained her trust fund, seized her home, and left her to freeze in an alley. Now, when she refuses, her uncle locks the door and lunges for her throat to take the marrow by force. But the compliant niece died in the snow. Arlena drives surgical scissors into his hand, shreds the form, and escapes to unlock her grandfather's hidden pocket dimension, where she will build an impenetrable doomsday fortress and let the monsters who called themselves family rot in the coming hell.

Chapter 2

The torn pieces of paper on the floor were a declaration of war.

Dale stared at the fragments, his face first showing disbelief, then quickly turning into pure, uncontrollable rage.

How dare she refuse!

“Brenda, lock the door,” he roared, his eyes never leaving Arena.

Brenda reached for the door lock, and the lock clicked clearly and forcefully.

It locked them inside. It turned the ward into a cage.

Arena's heart pounded beneath her ribs like a startled wild bird. But her mind remained unusually calm. She recalled the aftermath of her parents' funeral. How Dale had divided their inheritance. How her trust fund had mysteriously shrunk.

How they left her with nothing, isolated and helpless. This is the crucial moment. If she doesn't fight back, she's only delaying the inevitable end.

“You are monsters,” she said, her voice low and steady. It cut through Grandma Tucker’s incessant cursing. “This has never been about Brandi. It’s about my parents’ trust fund. You wanted me to be weak and defenseless after they left so you could take everything.”

The accusation struck them like a slap in the face. All three froze. Their shared, unspoken conspiracy was now laid bare, hanging in the sterile air between them. They couldn't comprehend how she knew. The quiet, oblivious girl they had always manipulated had suddenly grown fangs and a brain.

Dale's face contorted. His feigned concern for his niece completely crumbled. "You deserve a beating!"

He roared, his voice echoing through the walls. "Your parents are too soft on you. I'll do it for them!"

He lunged at him.

Just as she had predicted. A clumsy, blatantly brute-force sprint.

Brenda put on a masterful performance, shrinking back to the doorway and covering her eyes with one hand as if too afraid to look. But Arena saw it. Brenda had perfectly adjusted her body angle, leaving Dale a clear path.

Time seemed to slow down. Dale's thick, fleshy hand reached for her throat. His face was a mask swollen with rage.

Arena did not back down. She did not scream.

She moved when his hand was just inches from her neck.

She raised the scissors from under the blanket in a fluid arc. The movement was concise and precise, driven by a lifetime of pent-up anger.

The sharp stainless steel tip pierced the back of Dell's outstretched hand.

A nauseating, wet, squeaking sound rang out as the blade pierced the skin and muscle.

Dale's roar turned into a scream of agony. It was a pure, animalistic pain. He pulled his hand back, clutching it tightly, and bright red blood gushed from his hand, splattering onto the white ground.

"My hand! You crazy woman, you stabbed me!" he screamed.

Arena wasted not a second. As he staggered backward, she lashed out with her bare foot, striking the leg of the metal medical cart. The cart collapsed with a deafening crash of steel and plastic, its contents scattering across the floor and forming a barrier between her and them.

She climbed out of bed and stepped barefoot onto the cold linoleum floor.

“Brandy’s selfish genes should end with her,” Arena spat, her voice dripping with venom. “She doesn’t deserve a future.”

Grandma Tucker finally snapped out of her shock. Her trembling finger pointed at Arena, her face contorted with fear and rage. "You're a demon! A monster! We've kept a viper!"

Arena ignored her. Her eyes were fixed on the door. Her only goal was to escape.

She moved.

Brenda saw her coming and tried to block her way. "You're not going anywhere! You'll pay for it!"

Arena didn't slow down. She slammed her shoulder into Brenda, shoving her away with astonishing force. "Get out of my way," she roared. "You vampires are the ones who should go to hell. I'm just taking back my life."

Behind her, Dale was still yelling that he was going to call the police and that she would rot in jail.

The threat was hollow. She was a patient. They were the abusers who locked her up. Their words were against her words. And she had old and new scars that could testify to her words.

She flung open the door and rushed into the hallway.

The fluorescent lights in the hospital corridor were blinding. The air here smelled different. It smelled like freedom.

She didn't look back. She started running.

Her bare feet slapped against the gleaming floor. Her hospital gown, open at the back, billowed behind her. She drew attention, but she didn't care.

She remembered the last time she ran like this, in her past life. Not from the hospital—she was too weak then, her body ruined by their bone marrow extraction, her immune system collapsed. She could only drag herself along. She could only crawl. She had been a resource they used up and then discarded, a blood bag that had served its purpose. That memory—that bone-deep exhaustion, her legs trembling just standing up—flashed through her mind like a heavy punch.

This time was different. This time, she ran on her own two feet. This time, she was free.

As she turned a corner, a figure blocked her way.

It was Brandy. Her cousin. The root of all this. She was pale and haggard, but her eyes held that familiar, self-righteous willfulness.

“Alena, what are you doing?” Brandy complained, reaching out to grab the sleeve of her hospital gown. “Mom says you’re difficult.”

Physical contact is like a spark on a gasoline line.

Instinct took over everything.

Arena didn't think. She simply reacted. She swung her elbow back sharply, striking Brandy's soft abdomen hard and solidly.

The air in Brandy's lungs was expelled with a painful "puff." She bent over, staggered backward, and fell to the ground, her face filled with disbelief and pain.

Arena stopped and looked down at her. This girl who always demanded, always expected, and always received everything. This girl who, for her own benefit, was willing to destroy Arena's health without any remorse.

“You know,” Arena said, her voice flat and cold. “You know what the doctor said. You know it will cripple me, and you don’t care. That’s the root of all this.”

Just then, Dale, Brenda, and Grandma Tucker slid around the corner. They saw Brandy lying on the ground, with Arena standing beside her like a vengeful goddess in a cheap hospital gown.

They rushed to Brandy's side, forming a united front of anger and condemnation.

“Look what you’ve done!” Brenda screamed.

“You’ll go to hell for this!” Grandma Tucker roared.

Dale covered his bloodied hand, pointing at her, his face a testament to future revenge.

They were a family. A group. But she was no longer a member of it.

Arena turned her back to them, to their noise and poison. She walked toward the elevator, her posture upright, her head held high.

The elevator doors slid open. She stepped inside.

As the elevator doors slid shut, separating her from them, she saw her reflection in the polished steel panel: a pale, wild-eyed girl with blood on her hands.

No. It wasn't blood on my hands.

It is freedom.
