Chapter 7

Seeing that I was silent, she tilted her head to one side, studying my face with the slow, proprietary attention of someone examining a forgery held up to the light. The hallway behind her was empty. Somewhere deeper in the restaurant a glass clinked against a table, and the sound traveled the marble corridor like a single note struck on a piano in an otherwise silent room.

"I've wanted to say this since the first time we met," Alessia said, and her voice carried the particular softness of a woman who knew she was being watched even when no one else was around, "don't you think we look very much alike, little sister?"

In that moment, I had never felt such humiliation and disgrace. The words landed with surgical precision, each syllable designed to strip me of whatever composure I had left. Under her triumphant gaze, I understood what she was really saying: that I was the copy, the stand-in, the approximation of a woman Damien had never stopped wanting. That every tender gesture he had ever offered me was borrowed currency, minted in her name and spent carelessly on mine. My thumb moved once across the inside of my wrist, pressing against the pulse there as though confirming I was still real, still standing.

I could only flee in panic. My heels struck the polished floor too fast, the sound chasing me down the corridor like laughter I refused to hear.

Back in the private room, my colleagues' warmth began to thaw my icy blood. The table was loud with toasts and overlapping conversations, the easy camaraderie of associates who worked the legitimate side of things and never looked too closely at the machinery beneath. Someone slid a glass of prosecco toward me. Someone else was telling a story about a shipment delay that had the whole table groaning. I let the noise close around me like a coat, and for a few minutes I was just another woman at a farewell dinner, surrounded by people who wished her well. The front-business life I had maintained for seven years, the quiet administrative role that gave me a reason to exist in Damien Valenti's orbit without anyone asking questions, was ending tonight. These people didn't know the real reason I was leaving. They thought I had a better opportunity. They thought I was moving on.

Just as I was about to cast aside that unpleasant encounter, the door to the room swung open.

The conversations didn't stop all at once. They staggered, table by table, like dominoes falling in sequence, because the man standing in the doorway carried the kind of authority that made noise feel like an offense. Damien Valenti, heir apparent and underboss of the Valenti Family, stood framed by the dark wood of the entrance, his charcoal suit cut so precisely it looked like armor. Two full tables of people stared back at him, and he froze for a moment, clearly not expecting an audience.

Then his eyes found mine.

I could see the restrained anger in his gaze, though I couldn't understand why. His jaw was set hard, the tendons in his neck visible above the collar of his shirt. Whatever Alessia had told him in the minutes since I'd left her in that corridor, it had turned his expression into something I barely recognized. This was not the man who left quiet gifts on my nightstand or pressed his mouth to my hair when he thought I was sleeping. This was the underboss, cold and absolute, and his anger was aimed at me like the barrel of a gun.

He clenched his fists before finally calling my name, ordering me outside. The room had gone completely still. I felt every pair of eyes follow me as I stood, my chair scraping back against the floor. Puzzled, I followed him out, telling myself there was an explanation, that he would lower his voice once we were alone and this would resolve into something I could understand.

The corridor was empty. The lighting was low, warm amber against dark walls, and somewhere a clock ticked with the patience of a man who had all the time in the world.

Damien's hand came across my face so fast I didn't register the motion, only the result. The crack of his palm against my cheek echoed off the marble like a gunshot, and my head snapped to the side, my vision blurring for one terrible second.

It was the first time he had ever hit me.

I stared at him in disbelief, my hand rising slowly to cover the place where his palm had landed. The skin burned, hot and immediate, and beneath it something deeper cracked open, something that seven years of silence and devotion had kept carefully sealed. He showed no sign of guilt or hesitation. No flicker of regret crossed his features, no softening around the eyes. Just pure fury, naked and absolute, as though I had committed a betrayal worthy of blood.

"Why did you push Alessia?" His voice was low, controlled, the voice he used in sit-downs when he wanted someone to understand exactly how thin the ice beneath them had become. "You knew she had a twisted ankle. I told you I'd explain things when we got back, but you just had to handle it so harshly?"

My cheek burned with pain. Not just the physical sting, but the deeper agony of realizing that he had already decided what happened without asking me a single question. He had taken her word, her performance, her carefully constructed version of events, and built a conviction from it before I'd even opened my mouth. In the hierarchy of his loyalties, I had just learned exactly where I stood.
